Gearing up to do what everyone else was doing at the time: get a business degree and work your way up in a company. However, in college, he felt more drawn to teaching after spending some time with a group of Autistic students. He knew right then that he’d be working not only with students, but helping with the perspective of the Autistic community as a whole. What an opportunity it was to sit down and have a conversations with the creators of There They Go. Gabe is an unconventional, unsung hero. He doesn’t wear a cape and isn’t raved about on the big screen. However, Gabe finds small ways to teach and educate today’s youth. Gabriel was born in Philadelphia but spent a lot of his childhood moving to places like North Carolina and Jamaica. During that time, he felt like an outsider, living with one parent and away from most friends and family. Life wasn’t normal for him. As time passed, Gabriel found meaning in helping children. On a trip to get away from it all in Turkey, Gabriel saw hope in an unconventional way. He offered young Syrian Refugees water guns as a reminder to play, have fun, and be youthful. These guns represented a salvation, not war. This past week I was privileged to sit down with Cody Lewis, the founder of Pocket Change Designs. A few years ago, Cody left college heading into the "real world". He did some job searching until realizing that he would find no fulfillment in taking a "real job". So, he set out to change the world, by design. From sign language to entrepreneurship to yoga, Renee Kakeraka is an all around driven young woman. In this episode, Renee shares some of her journey as a young entrepreneur and the beginnings of her business, oLIVE Devices. oLIVE Devices started as a simple college project, then turned into her senior thesis, and finally expanded into a business seeking to develop Assistive Technology for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. As a recent college graduate, Renee has found herself needed to re-focus her actions and her goals. Through recent yoga teacher trainings, Renee has been able to slow down and listen to her body, an important awareness for all ages. Renee has experienced that failure is okay and through yoga, meditation, and positive self talk, she is able to move with two feet on the ground. You’re doing the best you can.” Rachel Rubin’s journey into fitness evolved from society telling her to “be the perfect size for her wedding dress” to coaching, training, and helping people create an internal sense of self.
