In this week’s episode of THE WINDOW: Sports betting podcast, Matt Russell (@mrussauthentic) looks back at Week 1 in the NFL with “Right or Wrong,” looking at how the absence of any defense — especially from units that are supposed to be good enough to carry a team — changed the calculus of handicapping games. 

The season opened with a pair of snoozers, and while we were “right” in taking the Patriots +3.5, the injury to Sam Darnold fundamentally changed HOW New England got the cover and the prop outlook shifted in kind. 

“Australia” was an unforeseen circumstance which left the market guessing on how teams were supposed to attack their sleep schedule for a game — a fundamentally lame way to have to handicap a game. 

The rest of the week was decided by what level of defense each team was interested in play, as busted coverages and broken tackles were pervasive. 

Note to selves for Week 1 2027: Don’t assume ANYTHING from a good a defense last season, let alone teams with units that are hoped to be improved. 

Luckily, the sheer number of touchdowns helped us cash some winners in those markets to ease the pain of a sub-.500 ATS Week 1.
