In deze aflevering hebben we een man aan tafel: Archell Thompson is samen met zijn dochter Yara te gast en geeft antwoord op deze moeilijke vragen. Archell, storyteller, auteur en artiest vertelt over zijn jeugd waarin hij zelf werd mishandeld, in de drugswereld belandde en hoe hij zijn leven weer op orde kreeg en zich nu elke dag inzet tegen kindermishandeling. Yara is zijn middelste dochter en deelt met ons hoe zij over haar vader denkt, tegen hem aankijkt en wat zij van hem leert en meekrijgt. Welkom bij een nieuwe aflevering van The Women’s Table.

Networking communities of women are growing all around the world and there is talk of women networking together, helping each other out. Women finally have come to the realization that we need to work together. Women even in the same line of work, start working together, where it used to be you OR me, it is now you AND me. In this episode I’m talking with Laura Damiano about the impact of women (net)working together.

Laura graduated in molecular biotechnology at the University of Turin, where she did also a PhD in cancer biology. In 2018 she became part of the staff of the UMCG, where she is now a funding advisor, project manager and member of the working group on diversity and inclusion. In 2018 she also founded the LeanIn Groningen circle, which now counts more than 50 members.

Women still experience pressure from society to have children. Is it  because women should have this natural urge to want to have children? Parents who think or feel that you ‘owe’ them grandchildren. In this episode I am talking with Shana O’Brien about motherhood: to have or not to have children, that’s the question. We will discuss the biases and prejudices society has when as a woman you decide not to have children. Shana is an independent consultant for non-profit organizations, was born and raised in the United States and has lived in The Netherlands for six years now. Women just don’t have the technical skills to do a good job in a tech position, there might be a few girls who pursuit a job in tech but most women don’t, women are too emotional so they don’t belong in tech position, girls and women just ‘suck’ at math and science so why would they want a job in tech? Are these legitimate questions or just bias assumptions? Stella Tsoutsouri, Mobile Developer who now studies for a Masters in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen, shares with us her personal opinion about why she thinks there are so few women in tech positions. Women pull each other down like crabs do in a basket. So if a woman wants to get out, she is being pulled down, women are mean and judgmental towards other women, beautiful women are superficial, successful women did not become successful on their own, women don’t like their bodies and are always concerned with their appearance and their looks.... These are just a few statements I found on the internet about how women talk about one another....

Women need to take care of the kids, women cannot have it all: a family and a career, if women want to have a successful career they cannot have kids, that’s selfish, if women want to have children and a job, it should be a parttime job.
