In this episode we see that the Law is not to show us how righteous we are, but how sinful. In particular, Christ teaches us that we all commit the sin of murder in our hearts.

In chapter 2 Paul argues from our natural impulse to judge to God's ultimate judgment of all men according to the "secrets of their heart." The Gospel calls all people to repentance, and charges us as guilty for crimes worthy of death.
