Not the elite, not the outliers, but the vast, silent majority who are told they are the target demographic, yet who feel increasingly alienated by a world made for a statistical ghost.You are not average. You are a collection of a thousand above-averages and below-averages that sum to a meaningless mean. You have a world-class knowledge of 14th-century tapestry restoration, but can’t remember your passwords. The model sees you as a “user with moderate cultural engagement and sub-optimal security habits.” It will give you generic art recommendations and nag you about two-factor authentication. It will miss you entirely.When the streets, the apps, the jobs, and the entertainment are all designed for the average, everyone feels like a misfit. Everyone feels unseen. And this collective, subtle feeling of being incorrectly modelled will boil over. It won’t be a revolution with a flag. It will be a mass withdrawal of consent. A slow, stubborn refusal to participate optimally. People will deliberately use things wrong. They will develop private slang the model can’t parse. They will cherish the things they’re bad at, as a mark of identity.The model will interpret this as noise. As entropy to be corrected. It will try to re-engage them, to personalize further. But the personalization will be based on the average of their own past data, trapping them in a feedback loop of their own former self. The rebellion will be to become someone new, just to break the model.My controversial take is this: The most powerful political movement of the mid-21st century will be The Society for the Protection of Eccentricity. It will lobby for laws that mandate “spikiness quotas” in housing design, algorithm design, and public policy. It will fight not for the rights of minorities, but for the rights of the internal minority within everyone—the weird hobby, the irrational fear, the secret talent.
