If you were in college in the early 80s and tuned in to your campus radio station, you probably heard a fair amount of R.E.M., maybe some Pixies, or The Smiths even. But you may have heard a lesser known group: Miracle Legion. With similar jangle pop melodies and vocal stylings as Peter Buck and Michael Stipe, the band was often compared to their R.E.M. counterparts. But what made Miracle Legion different is perhaps what kept them from reaching superstardom: the lyrical themes of singer Mark Mulcahy were less cryptic and poetic and more nostalgic and direct. They dealt with childhood memories we could all relate to. Which is why it's no surprise that the creator of the Nickelodeon cult classic TV show The Adventures of Pete and Pete approached Mark to write songs for his show about growing up in Suburbia (more on that next week).
