Christian Iraqis celebrate 7 year anniversary after ISIS attack

When you think of Ninevah no doubt youre reminded of the story of Gods call to Jonah to preach to the people there urging them to repent of their grievous sin

Today Ninevah is located in modern-day Iraq where seven years ago last Friday the Muslim terrorist group of ISIS attacked the 100000 Christians who lived there

The Worldview spoke with Max Wood Chairman of the American Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East

WOOD On August 6 2014 the ISIS armies rolled through the Nineveh Province area of Iraq which had traditionally been the highest concentration of Christians of any province in Iraq They destroyed everything They destroyed homes businesses They murdered people they assaulted women Over 100000 people fled that violence

Wood explained what motivated ISIS to commit such violence

WOOD The ISIS group was hoping to establish a pure radical Islamic caliphate Any person be they Christian or even Muslim that did not agree with their view of Islam was in the way They murdered them or gave them an opportunity to leave They gave some the opportunity to convert But ISIS goal and for three years they came close to accomplishing that was to establish a radical Sunni Islamic caliphate that they felt would eventually rule the world Fortunately after three years the western forces were able to stop ISIS and kill their leader and bring a halt to the excessive violence

Wood defined a caliphate

WOOD A Caliphate is an Islamic term for an empire The Caliph is the ruler and a caliphate is the Islamic theocracy empire or kingdom There was a caliphate 2000 years ago or so in the Middle East They hoped to return to those glory days when Islam ruled all of the Middle East parts of Europe and parts of Asia A caliphate ruling the world is something that the Quran commands in some of its verses Many Muslims interpret this to mean that they are authorized to violently overthrow governments in place violently eliminate religious groups that dont share their views Groups like ISIS want to see the whole world worship Allah

When ISIS attacked the Christians in Iraqs Ninevah Province seven years ago the believers escaped to Jordan Syria Turkey and Kurdistan For seven years the American Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East invests 21000 per month to sustain the 8000 Christian refugees in Jordan

Cuban pastor remains imprisoned over freedom protests

According toChristian Solidarity Worldwide Pastor Rosales Fajardo who was detained by State Security officers on July 11th during peaceful protests in the Cuban town of Palma Soriano is still under arrest Two other Cuban pastors who were detained during unprecedented nationwide protests in Cuba were releasedafter nearly two weeks in detention on July 24th

Kori Porter CEO of Christian Solidarity Worldwide said We call on the Cuban government to release Pastor Rosales Fajardo immediately We are deeply concerned for his well-being and it is unacceptable that his wife has been barred from speaking to or even seeing her husband for over three weeks Mrs Fajardo has traveled there multiple times most recently on July 30th to bring him food and personal hygiene items but each time has been blocked from speaking to or seeing him

On August 2nd Cuban authorities denied a request by Pastor Fajardos lawyer for habeus corpus which would have required that the pastor be physically present in court and a reason given for his detention

His lawyer has only been able to meet with the pastor on one occasion Photos taken of the pastor at the time of his detention show him in a chokehold He told the lawyer that he was handcuffed thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked with force in his abdomen and face resulting in the loss of a tooth

Chinese Communists forcibly remove crosses off Christian fishing boats

Dozens of Chinese fishing vessels bearing crosses in Chinas Zhejiang province were banned from leaving the port The Communists forcibly removed their crosses before allowing the fishermen to return to work reports International Christian Concern

According to China Aid in Zhoushan Island more than 50 of the people believe in Jesus Christ The Christian fishermen decorate their vessels with Christian symbols such as the cross and the word Emmanuel to give them a sense of peace hope and protection

On July 28 the Qushan Township government threatened the fishermen that if the cross on the vessel is not removed we will not give you authorization not allow you to pump gas and not allow you to depart When the Christian fishermen asked for the legal basis for such action the task force did not provide any justification yet they forcibly boarded the vessels to remove the crosses and paint over the word Emmanuel

While the Christians were targeted vessels with religious symbols from other faiths were left untouched Since the fishermen had nowhere to turn they shared their anger online They accused the Communists of being unreasonable since these vessels are personal property

Of the 130 Christian fishing vessels in Zhoushan Island more than 90 had their crosses removed

This story sounds eerily like Acts 413 16-20 When the Sanhedrin saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled ordinary men they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus What are we going to do with these men they asked But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus
