I was a violin teacher. A mom. I had never written a novel in my life. I had every reason to say no.
I said yes anyway.
My great-grandfather Robert Patrick Kennedy was a real Irish treasure hunter who married my great-grandmother Eudocia at a monastery in Arequipa, Peru in 1910. His brother John stayed in the Amazon, married an Amazonian tribal leader, and raised daughters in the heart of the rainforest. On his final expedition, Robert walked into the Amazon and never came home. Our family never knew what happened to him.
