  • #19 IPL Playoff Pushes, Altroz Enthusiasts and the Sorry Super Kings

Illness and operations put a hold on TWU proceedings for a few weeks as it did for the edit this week but we return to look at the IPL playoff hunt. Ollie, Sach and Bertie  here this week. Much to Sach's joy our Kings XI have made a stunning revival in the push for 4th but at the other end of the table CSK have written this year off. On English shores there's a new league format and pay cuts to discuss, whilst we broach our most geopolitical content yet in a politically complicated Spilling the Chai.

*This show was recorded on Sunday 25th October but could only be edited and released due to the reasons outlined above.. The information in the episode should be generally up to date.

  • #18 IPL Week 2, Pauper's XI Punjab, and Notts win the Blast

😫There are few certainties in the IPL, other than the inevitability that the team we decide to support ends up being complete toilet. It's matches left right and centre as we get to the end of Week 2 in the UAE. Bertie, Sach and Matt run the rule over the runners and riders as the direction of travel for some teams becomes a little more clear. Matt sings the praises of Delhi Capitals while Sach mourns the descent of his beloved Punjab whilst refusing to take the blame for roping the rest into following them.

Elsewhere Notts romp to victory in the Blast Finals Day, there are yet more sartorial question marks placed over IPL gear and the lads reflect on Freddie Flintoff's moving documentary.

☕India's premier scouser also answers your questions about Indian cricket in Spilling The Chai, so DM us and him all your questions for next time out.

  • #17 - The UAEPL, Heinous Hats and Women’s Cricket Revitalised

The entire franchise is back together and have a lot to catch up on.

The UAEPL is on the agenda. Notably looking at where Sach’s beloved Kings XI Punjab are going wrong, how the pitches are playing, and what‘s up with the IPL's questionable kit choices. Essex heroes lifted the first (and only?) Bob Willis Trophy, and isn’t Max happy about it. We reflect on whether the right team won and what red ball cricket may look like next year. Finally, Ollie looks at Women's Cricket Month amidst the conclusion of the Rachel Hayhoe Flint Trophy, as well as how women’s cricket came out of the pandemic fighting.  Oh, and there's a topical Diabolical Review System for you to get your teeth into.

  • #16 - Curtis Campher, TWU Talks

🍀At 28-5 and 78-5 in their first two ODIs against England last month, Ireland found themselves looking at the prospect of heavy defeats even before they could come out to have a bowl. Batting at seven, out walks Curtis Campher. In his first two internationals for the side, the allrounder dragged his side back into the games with two fluent half centuries before contributing vital wickets to give Ireland decent prospects of victory. If we impose the stringent cutoff of a minimum of one game played, he possesses one of the highest One Day International batting averages of all time at 127.

However, Curtis didn't grow up in the verdant surroundings of Galway or Cork like his teammates. Born and raised in Johannesburg, he came through the ranks at Gauteng and South Africa U19s.  Qualifying for Ireland through his grandmother, he's taken a leap of faith which, as it stands, appears to be paying off.

Bertie and Max sat down with him to chat about his breakthrough series, coming into the Irish team, and he offers more of an outsider's perspective as to how Irish cricket appears to be building a charge into world cricket. We find out why he left South Africa for a relative cricket backwater, being part of the dawn of Irish Test cricketers, how he finds the famous Irish craic, and whether he does in fact have a ball with Tom Banton's name on it.

  • #15 Pounds Stirling - England-Ireland 3rd ODI

By the time you read this England will have beaten Pakistan in a Test match for the ages. So why don't we rewind 5 days to another incredible victory.  The plucky minnows beating the World Champions. No this isn't a Jamie Vardy flick inspired England beating Germany 3-2 in a friendly in 2016 but  Ireland playing the English at their own game. Namely, letting a shedload of runs do the talking. Stirling and Balburnie secured Ireland's first ever win on English turf chasing down 328 with just one ball to spare. Cue jubilation from the Irish and a lot of 'fair play lads' going around on English cricket Twitter. Bertie and Max dissect the match and also where this sits psychologically for Ireland.

England's 1.5s meanwhile had to stick the triple salchow and landing three matches in a row to stand any chance of avoiding being shunted out for the big guns from the Test side. At the start of a new proper one day cycle what does this mean for those squad players and where does the defeat sit for England in the grand scheme of things?

  • #14 - Will-ey fit the Bill-ings? (England-Ireland 1st ODI)

Ireland. In front of nobody in Southampton. With a second choice England team. On a Thursday. This is the big one, and if you tune in this then you're a true member of the diehard club. So come on in, you're welcome here.

Join Max and Bertie for a dissection of the world champions' fringe players putting themselves into the shop window only to be dropped for Stokes, Root and Buttler.  Meanwhile Ireland's best player is a mate of Max's adding to the growing list of players we can officially call Friends of TWU and we gush too much over England's depth.

  • #13 - 'Seam Strength, Spin Questions' (or England- Windies Series Review)

Oh baby, cricket's returned and it's back with the intensity of dropped Stuart Broad. 3 weeks, 3 Tests. Boom, boom, boom. In the immortal words of the great Peter Kay we are the cricket marines, the Hobnobs being dunked into the Test match tea every week, desperately shouting 'Again' as we're biologically set for constant 5 day a week cricketing immersion. "I'm going nowhere son dip me again," as another 3 Tests against Pakistan appears close on the horizon.

England wrapped up their series victory over the West Indies the other day, and with Max Parry making a long awaited return to the official roster the boys congregate to assess England's performance and more importantly how we can get Stuart Broad more angry. Chris Silverwood's side appear to be making progress and Bertie issues his key takeaways from what has been a good showing all in all. But a 2-1 defeat is the best the West Indies can realistically hope for nowadays away from home as Max bemoans how the game is failing to serve cricket in the Caribbean. Elsewhere, Ollie bemoans Sibley's lack of 'busyness' and Max destroys hopes of obtaining an international cricketing friend of the show.

And cheers to the West Indies for travelling during a global pandemic for the financial wellbeing of the English game. A trip which they didn't have to make and will have mainly helped English cricket keep its head above water.

  • #12 - England vs West Indies Series Preview

3 Tests in 3 weeks. Brace yourselves. To set you off a Moores-Godden partnership with a sprinkling of Barbados preview England's much awaited Test series against West Indies. We first look to England in a run down which Ollie would complain post-recording became a case of Bertie asking him loads of questions, despite himself offering little in the way of questions in the other direction. Either way we get out all our expectations for the new series in the first meaningful cricket of the year on English soil before welcoming on Nikhil Uttamchandani from the Caribbean Cricket Podcast to give us the lowdown of the West Indies side, and what English fans should be on the look out for.

  • #11 - MASSIVE Squads and So Long Sir Geoffrey

The cricket podcast content gods have blessed us with the actual return of cricket. England-Windies is pencilled into the diary as Sky subscriptions are dusted off and The Rose Bowl ups its anti-bac gel supplies in preparation for the largest England squad ever conceived by man. That means Ollie, Sach and Bertie roll back into town, taking in all the fun stuff - logistics, Sir Geoffrey and cricket back on the BBC. The summer starts now!

  • #10 - Will Fraine (Yorkshire CCC), TWU Talks

2020 was meant to be Yorkshire batsman Will Fraine's breakout season. 23 and playing for his home county, coronavirus has placed a slight bump in the road. Bertie and Ollie have a chat with him about his career so far as well as the Yorkshire lads' expectations for the season and the financial problems which have come the way of the club with cricket and social gatherings on hold. From pay cuts to furloughing and remote physio he covers everything he's adjusted to over the past three months. Also, coming through the ranks of the MCCU system at Durham University, he offers a case for the defence for the recently much maligned MCCU friendlies and setup, suggesting it's about much more than pre-season friendlies.
