  • XZRS: HOWARD BLOOM - The Self Beneath the Floorboards Of The Self - Part 3
Howard Bloom, a Visiting Scholar at New York University, is founder of the International Paleopsychology Project, executive editor of the New Paradigm book series, a founding board member of the Epic of Evolution Society, and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the National Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Society, the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, The European Sociobiological Society, and the Academy of Political Science. He has been featured in every edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering since the publication's inception. Bloom has taken an unusual approach to the study of mass moods and cultural convolutions. He started out normally enough, building his first Boolean algebra machine at the age of twelve, becoming a dedicated microscopist that same year, codesigning a computer which won a Westinghouse Science Award before he left grade school, and being granted a private brainstorming session with the head of the Graduate Physics Department of The State University of New York, Buffalo, at the age of thirteen. By sixteen he was a lab assistant at the world's largest cancer research center, the Roswell Park Memorial Research Cancer Institute, where he helped plumb the mysteries of the immune system. And before his freshman year of college he designed and executed research in Skinnerian programmed learning at Rutgers University's Graduate School of Education. Then came an act of academic heresy. After graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from New York University, Bloom turned down four graduate fellowships and embarked on a 20-year-long urban anthropology expedition to penetrate what he calls "society's myth-making machinery"--the inner sanctums of politics and the media. During his foray into "the dark underbelly of mass emotion" he edited a magazine which won two National Academy of Poets prizes, founded the leading avant-garde art studio on the East Coast, was featured on the cover of Art Direction Magazine, then gave up listening to Beethoven, Bartok, and Mozart to become editor of a rock magazine. Using correlational studies, focus groups, empirical surveys, ethnographic expeditions into suburban teen subcultures, and other scientific techniques, Bloom more than doubled the publication's sales, and was credited by Rolling Stones' Chet Flippo with having founded a new genre--the heavy metal magazine. Seeking still further ways to infiltrate modernity's mass mind, Bloom formed a public relations firm in the music and film industry and won the confidence of those whose territory he'd invaded. The payoff in knowledge proved invaluable. Bloom worked with Michael Jackson, Prince, John Cougar Mellencamp, Kiss, Queen, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Diana Ross, Simon & Garfunkel, The Talking Heads, AC/DC, Billy Idol, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run D.M.C., Simply Red, and the heads of many a media conglomerate. He was adept at spotting new subcultures, entering them, and helping their members achieve their goals…a skill which gave him an inside role in the rise of rap, disco, and punk rock. The pinnacles of fame provided surprising scientific revelations. "When you're at the center of the sort of attention-storm which hits when you're working with a superstar," Bloom says, "it's as if the laws of physics change. Hormones charge you up in ways you never imagined. Time perception alters. You resolve crisis in minutes, seeing solutions instantly which previously would have taken you weeks. "More important is the impact of a communal ritual like a rock concert. The star onstage is taken over by a self he doesn't know, one that seems to surge through him as if he were a length of empty pipe. The force of this strange passion welds the audience in an almost transcendent bond." Bloom's task was to first experience the exaltation, then to dissect it. "The model for this work," he says, "came from William James, who attempted to feel the ecstatic ex

  • XZRS: MICHAEL TELLINGER - Adam's Calendar
Michael Tellinger graduated from Wits University in 1983 with a B.Pharm degree. While studying he spent most of his time moving within the entertainment circles performing on stage and screen. He started his career in Nick Taylor's musical "Christian" at His Majesty's theatre in 1980 and followed this by playing the part of "Joseph" at the opening of the State Theatre. At this time he launched his solo career as a musician and released his first single called "Hazel" in 1981, which was nominated for a SARIE award. In 1982 Michael teamed up with Russell Stirling and formed the musical duo "Stirling & Tellinger". The two played together for four years and had a number of radio hits with "Call Me" and "What's a Nice Girl Like You, Doing In a Place Like This" Their videos took the market by storm and laid the foundation for many of the SA music videos of the early 80's. The "Call Me" video was voted among the top two most popular videos at MIDEM in Cannes 1984. In 1985 the duo recorded an album in Nashville, under the guidance of Terry Dempsey. During a year in Los Angeles he attracted the attention of various agents but because of the cultural boycott against white South African musicians, the duo was bluntly rejected. Michael worked for Cannon Films as a sound designer and editor, returning to SA in mid 1986, when he recorded the controversial anti-apartheid song "We come from Johannesburg" which was banned shortly after its release. Michael continued his career as an actor and musician, appearing as one of the leads in South Africa's first soapie called "Orpen House" and as the lead in a six-episode series "The Star Shooters' in 1987 for which he created the soundtrack. He presented a variety of hit SABC shows like "Graffiti' and "Fast Forward". His experience with SABC led him to get involved in TV production and he created shows like the talk show called "Late Nite Live" and "Weekend Bonus". Began a career in advertising as a writer and received a Clio award in New York in 1989 which caused Michael to join partner Philip Botha in a specialist radio ad agency called Airheads which became a highly competitive and visible niche player in the South African advertising industry. In 1997 Michael returned to music and launched Nebula BOS Records. His latest contribution to the arts was "Side By Side With Angels", a moving collaboration of SA musicians for the TSUNAMI disaster fund, which Michael wrote and produced with Verny Scholtz of Just Ginger fame. The song and video featured a host of leading SA artists like Malaika, Dr. Victor, Watershed, Dawnay and others. In 2000 he was given his own weekly radio show on Cape Talk radio that dealt with science, innovation, technology and success stories. In 2001 Michael developed an educational TV show for the SABC which resulted in him staring a publishing company, writing a number of children's educational story books, developing a literacy programme, and a range of games and AV products. He has written a number of screenplays but "Slave Species of god" is his first published non-fiction book, as a result of a 25-year obsession with science and the cosmos. - www.slavespecies.com

  • XZRS: TRAVIS WALTON - Alien Abductee - Fire in the Sky - Part 1
Travis Walton (born April 23 1957) is an American logger who claims to have been abducted by a UFO on November 5, 1975, while working with a logging crew in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona. Walton could not be found, but reappeared after five days of intensive searches. The Walton case received considerable mainstream publicity and remains one of the best-known instances of alleged alien abduction. UFO historian Jerome Clark writes that "Few abduction reports have generated as much controversy" as the Walton case. It is furthermore one of the very few alien abduction cases with corroborative eyewitnesses, and one of few abduction cases where the time allegedly spent in the custody of aliens plays a rather minor role in the overall account. UFO researchers Jenny Randles and Peter Houghe write that "Neither before or since has an abduction story" begun in the manner related by Walton and his coworkers. Furthermore, the Walton case is singular in that "the victim vanished for days on end with police squads out searching ... it is an atypical "Close Encounter: Fourth Kind" (CE4) ... which bucks the trend so much that it worried some investigators; others defend it staunchly." • XZRS: MIKE FISH - Business Man Rides Harley Across America to Help "Pay It Forward" To Troubled Homeowners
Business Man Rides Harley Across America to Help "Pay It Forward" To Troubled Homeowners - Mike Fish kicked off a 48-state motorcycle Ride for Hope on June 14, 2009. His goal is to bring his knowledge of real estate, lending, credit repair, budgeting and life planning to the people who need it most and rekindle the American dream. They visit homes in threat of foreclosure and work with the homeowners to find a way to take control of their finances and work out solutions to stop the foreclosure and save their credit. "We are hitting all 48 contiguous states, and we are going from town to town to help save people from losing their homes, even if we walk away without a dime," Fish said. "People around the country are hurting, through no fault of their own, and no one is stepping up to help. The big banks that knowingly sold bad products are now shrugging their shoulders and turning their backs on the people they've hurt. I've been at rock bottom, down to my last few dollars, so I know their experience. I came back from nothing, so I know how to help them. Because the real estate business has been good to me, I feel the need to give something back by 'paying it forward' to those in need." - www.soundlifeeeducation.com

  • XZRS: X MINUS ONE - 1957 Episode - 6 - Venus is a Man's World
X Minus One was a half-hour science fiction radio series broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC. Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950-51), X Minus One is widely considered among the finest science fiction dramas ever produced for radio. The first 15 episodes were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts. Episodes of the show include adaptations of Robert Sheckley's "Skulking Permit," Bradbury's "Mars Is Heaven," Heinlein's "Universe" and "The Green Hills of Earth", " Pohl's "The Tunnel under the World," J. T. McIntosh's "Hallucination Orbit," Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air" and George Lefferts' "The Parade." The series was canceled after the 126th broadcast on January 9, 1958. However, the early 1970s brought a wave of nostalgia for old-time radio; a new experimental episode, "The Iron Chancellor" by Robert Silverberg, was created in 1973, but it failed to revive the series. NBC also tried broadcasting the old recordings, but their irregular once-monthly scheduling kept even devoted listeners from following the broadcasts. All episodes of the show survive.

  • XZRS: JERRY LEHANE III - The Face and Life on Mars
In one of the images taken by Viking 1 on July 25, 1976, one of the Cydonian mesas, situated at 40.75° north latitude and 9.46° west longitude, had the appearance of a humanoid "Face on Mars". When the image was originally acquired, Viking chief scientist Gerry Soffen dismissed the "face" in image 35A72 as a "[trick] of light and shadow". However, a second image, 70A13, also shows the "Face" and was acquired 35 Viking orbits later at a different "sun-angle" than the 35A72 image. This latter discovery was made independently by two computer engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Vincent DiPietro and Gregory Molenaar, who discovered the two misfiled images, Viking frames 35A72 and 70A13, while searching through NASA archives. The occurrence of an object on Mars with a seemingly human face caught the attention of individuals and organizations interested in extraterrestrial intelligence and visitations to Earth, and the images were published in this context in 1977. Some commentators, most notably Richard Hoagland, believe the "Face" to be evidence of a long-lost Martian civilization along with other features they believe are present, such as apparent pyramids, which they argue are part of a ruined city. Image analysis of the original Viking images led a few researchers to suggest that the features of the "Face" might not be an accidental consequence of viewing conditions. Astronomer Carl Sagan criticized much of the speculation about the "Face" in an eponymous chapter of his book The Demon-Haunted World. More than 20 years after the Viking 1 images were taken, a succession of spacecraft visited Mars and collected new data from the Cydonia region. These spacecraft have included NASA's Mars Global Surveyor (1997-2006) and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (2006-), and the European Space Agency's Mars Express probe (2003-). In contrast to the relatively low resolution of the Viking images of Cydonia, these new platforms afford much improved resolution. For instance, the Mars Express images are at a resolution of 14 m/pixel (46 ft/pixel) or better. By combining data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on the Mars Express probe and the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on board NASA's Mars Global Surveyor it has been possible to create a 3D representation of the "Face on Mars". Today, the "Face" is generally accepted to be an optical illusion, an example of pareidolia. After analysis of the higher resolution Mars Global Surveyor data NASA stated that "a detailed analysis of multiple images of this feature reveals a natural looking Martian hill whose illusory face-like appearance depends on the viewing angle and angle of illumination".[24] Similar optical illusions can be found in the geology of Earth; examples include the Old Man of the Mountain and the Badlands Guardian, which resembles a human head wearing a Native American headdress. Aside from speculation concerning their artificial origins, Cydonia and the "Face on Mars" also appear frequently in popular culture, including feature films, television series, videogames, comic books, and even music. http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/viking.html
