  • XZRS: X Minus One
Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1956-13), X Minus One is widely considered among the finest science fiction dramas ever produced for radio. The first 15 episodes were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with a few original scripts. Episodes of the show include adaptations of Robert Sheckley's "Skulking Permit," Bradbury's "Mars Is Heaven," Heinlein's "Universe" and "The Green Hills of Earth", " Pohl's "The Tunnel under the World," J. T. McIntosh's "Hallucination Orbit," Fritz Leiber's "A Pail of Air" and George Lefferts' "The Parade." The program opened with announcer Fred Collins delivering the countdown, leading into this introduction (although later shows were partnered with Galaxy Science Fiction rather than Astounding Science Fiction): Countdown for blastoff... X minus five, four, three, two, X minus one... Fire! [Rocket launch SFX] From the far horizons of the unknown come transcribed tales of new dimensions in time and space. These are stories of the future; adventures in which you'll live in a million could-be years on a thousand may-be worlds. The National Broadcasting Company in cooperation with Street and Smith, publishers of Astounding Science Fiction presents... X Minus One.. The series was cancelled after the 126th broadcast on January 9, 1958. However, the early 1970s brought a wave of nostalgia for old-time radio; a new experimental episode, "The Iron Chancellor" by Robert Silverberg, was created in 1973, but it failed to revive the series. NBC also tried broadcasting the old recordings, but their irregular once-monthly scheduling kept even devoted listeners from following the broadcasts. All episodes of the show survive.

She has hosted two of her own spiritual talk shows: "Between Worlds" on UPN-TV, and "Angel Talk" on PAX-TV. Recently Michelle was named "America's #1 Psychic" by Lifetime Television after winning "America's Psychic Challenge" competitive reality TV program where she proved her supernatural abilities. Naturally gifted since childhood, Michelle has many God given talents. These abilities enable her to connect with her Guardian Angels and Spirit Guides to give clear and accurate information about Personal Issues, World Events, and the Future. She has a 98% accuracy rate with her readings. As a CLAIRVOYANT (clear seeing) Michelle receives visions of people, places, things, and of the past, present & future, she is CLAIRAUDIENT (clear hearing) listening to messages from the other side, CLAIRSENTIENT (psychic senses of smelling, tasting, and feeling) , as an EMPATH she takes on the sensations of the physical and emotional states of being. With one foot in the spirit realm and one on the earth plane, she is able to see and converse with spirits that have crossed to the other side. These souls communicate telepathically through feelings and pictures. No words exist which can describe the intensity of this communication. • CCBB: Lennart Bjorneborn How To Increase Serendipity
Lennart Björneborn works as an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Studies, University of Copenhagen. He is especially interested in what design dimensions in physical and digital spaces may enable and support serendipitous encounters. His PhD thesis (2004) dealt with “small-world” web structures that create short link distances between very different topics on the web, thus facilitating serendipitous encounters when people follow web links. Later on, he has studied serendipity dimensions in the design of physical public libraries (2008), as well as “micro-serendipity” as meaningful coincidences in everyday life shared on Twitter (2013). Recently, he has published a conceptual framework on “Three key affordances for serendipity” (2017) connecting environmental and personal factors in serendipitous encounters. In a new research project, focus is on researchers and how their research interests emerge, develop, and change over time, and how this is affected by serendipitous encounters with people, objects, information, etc., that are "adjacent possible" in different physical and digital environments used by the researchers. An important outcome of the new research project will be a better understanding of how we can design innovative information environments so they function as “possibility spaces” that can support researchers - and hopefully, other people as well - in experiencing and exploring “the adjacent possible”, serendipity, and interest development.

  • XZRS: Philip Smith - Walking Through Walls
The only son of Lew and Esther Smith - a successful and renowned interior design visionary and a high society figurine - Philip Smith was no stranger to the culture of American art and lifestyle. However, as the climate of his native Miami took sharp political turns, a la Castro-ism and the Cuban Missile Crisis, his family life took sharper ones. Somewhere in between design consultations with Walt Disney and cocktails with the Nixons, Smith's father began to recognize powerful psychic healing abilities within himself. Interior design went from his profession to his marginal duty; something he did when he wasn't busy using his deep healing energy to remove tumors and perform exorcisms…and in true Lew Smith fashion, he led his category. Smith describes his father's newfound prominence in the psychic realm: "All of a sudden he was on the A-list party circuit for the deceased." So is the story of Walking Through Walls (Atria/Simon & Schuster), a collection of precise and poignant recollections from Smith's fascinating upbringing. For Smith, teenage angst took on new meaning, as his actions were frequently criticized by his father's "spirit guides" - a network of diseased scholars and healers he regarded as friends and teachers. Having your mind read by your father on a daily basis certainly took the fun out of surfing, sex and Scientology. Walking Through Walls is currently available at www.amazon.com, and will be released in paperback version in November 2009. • XZRS: Rob Catalin - A Review of AVATAR
Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic film written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. The film is set in the year 2154 on Pandora, a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. Humans are engaged in mining Pandora's reserves of a precious mineral, called unobtanium, while the Na'vi-a race of indigenous humanoids-resist the colonists' expansion, which threatens the continued existence of the Na'vi and the Pandoran ecosystem. The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi bodies used by a few of the film's human characters to interact with the Na'vi. Development on Avatar began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page scriptment for the film. Filming was supposed to take place after the completion of Titanic, for a planned release in 1999, but according to Cameron, the technology was not yet available to portray his vision of the film. Work on the language for the film's extraterrestrial race began in summer 2005, and Cameron began developing the script and fictional universe in early 2006. The film was released in traditional 2-D, as well as 3-D, RealD 3D, Dolby 3D, and IMAX 3D formats. Avatar is officially budgeted at $237 million; other estimates put the cost at $280-310 million to produce and $150 million for marketing. The film is being touted as a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology, for its development of 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking with cameras that were specially designed for the film's production. Avatar premiered in London, UK on December 10, 2009, and was released on December 18, 2009 in the U.S. and Canada to critical acclaim and commercial success. It grossed $27 million on its opening day domestically (in the United States and Canada) and $77 million domestically[ on its opening weekend. It opened two days earlier internationally and grossed $232 million worldwide in its first five days of international release. Within three weeks of its release, with a worldwide gross of over $1 billion, Avatar became the second highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, exceeded only by Cameron's previous film Titanic. In response to the film's financial success, Cameron confirmed the possibility of two sequels. - www.supermnanorth.com

  • XZRS: Joel Garreau - Radical Evolution: The Promise and Peril of Enhancing Our Minds, Our Bodies
Joel Garreau is a student of culture, values, and change. Most recently he is the author of Radical Evolution: The Promise and Peril of Enhancing Our Minds, Our Bodies, and What It Means to Be Human, published in 2005 by Doubleday. Joel's latest book takes an unprecedented, sometimes alarming, always spellbinding look at the hinge in history at which we have arrived. For hundreds of millennia, our technologies have been aimed outward at altering our environment in the fashion of fire, agriculture, or space travel. Now, for the first time, we are increasingly aiming inward at modifying our minds, memories, metabolisms, personalities, progeny and possibly our immortal souls. Radical Evolution is about altering human nature -- not in some distant tomorrow, but right now, on our watch. Joel's reputation as an astute interpreter of culture and values was launched with the 1981 publication of The Nine Nations of North America, a book that describes how the continent behaves not so much like 50 states or three countries, but nine separate and powerful civilizations or economies that pay scant attention to political boundaries in the course of forging their own destinies. Nine Nations won critical acclaim and has been embraced by readers, marketers, political operatives and academics, putting Joel on the short list of the world's most prominent cultural demographers. Ten years later, Joel focused on who we are through the prism of the modern metropolis we are building in Edge City: Life on the New Frontier. In what was termed "groundbreaking" work by The New York Times, Joel points out that we are building the biggest change in 150 years in how we live, work, play, pray, shop, and die. The cities of the 21st century are not the 19th century versions like downtown Chicago or Philadelphia. Rather, they are the more than 180 enormous new centers of commerce that have sprung up in the last 30 years -- places like Silicon Valley in California and the Route 128 corridor outside Boston, places shaped by the automobile, the jet passenger plane, and the networked computer. A long-time reporter and editor at The Washington Post, Joel is now principal of The Garreau Group, the network of his best sources committed to understanding who we are, how we got that way, and where we're headed, worldwide. He is a fellow at The New America Foundation in Washington, D.C., and is Lincoln Professor of Law, Culture and Values at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law and the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University. He has served as a fellow at Cambridge University, the University of California at Berkeley and George Mason University, is an affiliate of The Institute for Science, Innovation and Society at Oxford, and is a Science Journalism Laureate at Purdue. He is a member of Global Business Network, the pioneering scenario-planning organization, and is the troll of a small forest in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge. - www.garreau.com
