• At least 25 countries have reported cases of Covid-19.
• China was in the midst of a trade war with the U.S before the Coronavirus outbreak.
• This occurred right before the Chinese new lunar year travel season where 100s of millions of Chinese travel home to their families which in turn benefits the Chinese economy. It is a very important time of the year for businesses to hopefully make it into the black.
• At least 10 cities have been shut down in the Hubei province and citizens must stay home which means all businesses in these cities cease operations. The economy is at a standstill but the people are still spending money to survive. 
• Chinese government discouraged large gatherings.
• Business and factories closed in at least 24 provinces after Chinese government extended lunar new year holiday, children not in school. These areas account for more than 80% of china's GDP and 90% of its exports so economic standstill really hurts the economy.
• Thousands of flights from non-chinese airlines have been canceled to china because of the virus. It halts the tourist industry of over 59 million tourists a year.
• Disney parks Closed in China Disney expected to take 175 mil hit. 
• In 2019 the twenty-day period starting at the eve of the lunar new year made the Chinese box office over 1.5 billion dollars. In 2020 the same twenty-day period grossed 3.9 million dollars. 
• Covid 19 has isolated the world’s largest population and second-largest economy from the rest of the world. 
• Shipping activity has dropped 20% and oil prices have fallen worldwide.
• Nissan, Honda, Apple, and Nike (all large businesses with huge economic impact) all operate large scale factories and generate lots of business in China.
• China is 15% of the world’s GDP. 
• Asian countries are very Impacted because they are reliant on China, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand
• IHS Markit says “any slowdown in the Chinese economy sends not ripples but waves across the globe”. 
• Some financial advisors say that China could enter a recession.
• The Dow Jones has gone down 1,200 points on Thursday. These were the worst four days since the 2008 financial crisis. 
• From February 20th to February 27 the Dow Jones dropped 13% likely due to the coronavirus.
• The CDC said the Coronavirus would likely spread to the US it was now a matter of when.
• Capital Economics in London has stated that the economic consequences of the  Coronavirus “could be as bad as those of the global financial crisis.”
• You could shut down production in the US by shutting down production in China
• The government of Italy shut off Northern parts of Italy Regions, Lombardi Region. This area accounts for ⅓ of Ital’ys production of goods.
• When coronavirus spreads we will see sporadic closures of huge regions to prevent the spread.
• With the CDC preparing for an outbreak in America, analysts are worried about an additional threat to our economy with halts in the financial business and everyday life.
• Wall Street investors are on edge because it is unclear when the global health emergency will die down.
• US and chinse financial markets are inherently connected.

• On Dec. 31, the government in Wuhan, China, confirmed that health authorities were treating dozens of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause.
• On January 11 2019, a 61 year old man died from the virus in Wuhan. He was the first person to die from the 2019 novel coronavirus. He was a regular customer at the market in which the virus originated. 
• The United States, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand all confirmed cases of the Coronavirus on January 20th. These were the first cases of the virus outside of mainland china.
• On Jan. 23, Chinese authorities closed off Wuhan, a city of more than 11 million, by canceling planes and trains leaving the city, and suspending buses, subways and ferries within it. At this point in time , at least 17 people had died and more than 570 others had been infected
• The World Health Organization officially declared the 2019 novel coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern on January 30.
• On Jan. 31, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines said they would suspend service, for at least two months, between the United States and mainland China. The Trump administration said it would suspend entry into the United States by any foreign nationals who had traveled to China in the last 14 days, which is the maximum time it takes a person to become sick after being exposed to the virus. By this date, 213 people had died and nearly 9,800 had been infected worldwide.
• Dr. Li Wenliang, a Chinese doctor, died on February 7 after contracting the coronavirus. He was deemed a hero after raising alarm early on that the virus could spread quickly and easily and spin out of control. However, Chinese authorities silenced him and forced him to sign a legal agreement denouncing his warning as an unfounded and illegal rumor. Dr. Li’s death provoked anger and frustration at how the Chinese government mishandled the situation by not sharing information earlier and by silencing whistle-blowers.
• Chinese officials said the death toll had reached 1,016 while the number of infections had grown to 42,638 on Feb. 11.
• After widespread public outrage, the Communist Party in China fired top government officials in Hubei province and Wuhan.

Tensions between the US and Iran have been growing in response to the US killing of General Qassem Solomeini and the retaliations that followed by Iran. This episode delves into the most relevant event regarding the conflict. 

• Leader of the Iranian Quds Force, General Qassem Soleimani, was killed by a US airstrike while leaving the Baghdad Airport. 
  • Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at 2 Iraqi bases housing US forces and claims it is revenge for the Killing Of General Soleimani. 
  • The same night as the ballistic missile attack on American and Iraqi troops, Iran accidentally shot down a Ukranian airliner which had just lifted off from Tehran's main airport
  • The US imposes further economic sanctions on Iran to apply more pressure to come back to the negotiating table about a revised Nuclear Deal.
