The40 (Drum and Bass)

Back with the40 after a slightly longer break… And to mark an ahem… significant Birthday we have 50 tunes for you!

Just about 2 hours of music, and a show dominated by 3 dubpacks. Myth’s ‘Vol3’, Break’s ‘‘Vol2’ and just to be as unique as they are The Sauce with ‘The Hot Sauce Summer Dub Pack’! Add to that the best of whatever else has been out and we have our 40 tracks.

With the other 10, I’ve had a go. I’ve picked my 10 favourite tunes of the last 35 years. Tracks from 1990 onwards - (I retain the right to change these by the time you finish reading this), but I’ve had a go.

Also, next gig up, Underground Routes, upcoming October 11th in Hitchin. Tickets available from skiddle - I’ll be on a 92-93 Hardcore one - if you give us a follow you’ll see a promo mix I did on the YouTube page. The rest of the lineup is ridiculous too; come day party with us in Hertfordshire.

Up after this mix we’re back to the ICONs with an all Dillinja mix… get ready for that.

Before that, though…this.

Enjoy.😉

IMPRINTS - Reinforced Records (1990-1996) - d mix & Evolve

Reinforced Records.

Inspired by a night in the Jazz Cafe recently with 4 Hero, Fabio and Grooverider amongst others. I thought it was time to jump into a truly foundational label. One of the first i collected actually!

Founded in ‘89 by Marc Mac and Gus Lawrence then joined by Dennis McFarlane. Most of the early releases were combinations of the founders themselves, 4Hero, Manix and Tek 9.

Moving towards late ‘92/’93 the label was at the forefront of the darker side of the music. Looking at Goldie with Rufige, the continued work of Doc Scott and Nasty Habits, and not forgetting 4Hero and the techier sample led sound of theirs. You also have to mention the Enforcers Series that was so popular and are still so sought after!

I’ve decided to focus on the earlier music from Reinforced, finishing up just about where the ‘2nd Phase’ started. I’ll take you right up to ‘96.

I’ll dedicate a final section to one of my favourite producers, Nookie. Who took the Reinforced energy and added that musicality he’s so well known for. Before that is a mix of other artists that shaped the sound of this label. From the craziness of Nick OD, the drums of Ray Keith, the pianos of Manix, the edge of Rider to ruffness of Rufige and the drums of Manix, the feel of Manix, basically Manix… stop saying Manix…

Manix.

Speaking of M***x, I've included three tracks in the mix from one of my favourite EPs of all time. Tune for tune a winner… the EP is Called ‘Oblivion (Head in the Clouds)’. Find me a better track for track EP… I’ll wait…

Expect to hear everything from Rivet1201 all the way through to RIVET1293, I've had a lot of fun pulling out my favourites from this weighty back catalogue, I really hope you enjoy it.

On Reinforced records is…

4Hero - Mr. Kirk’s Nightmare

4Hero - Rising Son (Inst.)

Code 071 - A London Sumtin’

Manix - Stupid Dope Mix (Pt.1)

4Hero - Cookin Up Ya Brain

Before we get back to the new stuff with the40 Pt.6 (due in March), it’s time to have a look over our shoulder at yesteryear and where it all began.

Now, it may take a while, but the plan is to have a mix of tracks from every year from 1990 to 2000 😬 - watch this space!

First up is a mixture of 3 of these years 1994 to 1996. The focus will be that deeper, atmospheric (don’t call it intelligent) music from this time. Dominated by labels like Good Looking and Moving Shadow amongst others. Lots of long rolling drums, pads and 808 bass…

No chat, just straight mixing.

Evenin’ all!

Back in September 2018 we bought you ‘Break – The Remixes’ on our 61st Back To The Future Podcast (still available btw 😉 ). Over 6 years and another 40 or so shows later, we bring you the next chapter.

Break is still as prevalent on this show today as he was then, maybe even more so, and just as Iconic. You hear his influence so much these days through other artists and labels. That’s how important ‘the Producers Producer’ has become.

I spoke last time about his ability to transform any style or genre with a remix. This mix demonstrates his ability to do the same in collaboration. Whether with longtime musical partners like KYO, DLR, Total Science and Die or with the lesser spotted likes of Silent Witness, Mikal or Workforce his ingredients are always on display and unmistakable.

The tracks covering the last 20 years, really show the class and range of his work. Back with a focus on an amazing stalwart of the scene.

We bring you…

Back with another special mix from us!

For this episode we are focusing on one of the foundation labels from the scene.

True Playaz

The home of Hype, Zinc and Pascal, back in 96’ this label was everywhere. You can hear its influence all the way through Drum and Bass / Jungle history, right up to today. We've included a fair amount of the classics here as well as some of the lesser spotted personal faves.

Focusing on music between the years of 1996-2000 and produced by Hype, Zinc, Pascal and their many aliases, plus some well known producers from this time. This mix is jam packed with tracks that really give you a flavour of where the music was in the late 90’s.

Here’s our take of what we loved most from this label - Hope you enjoy it!
