    RUNT (fortyfive downstairs, Melbourne Australia)
One small woman takes on the world.

Following their incredibly successful and multi award-winning collaboration on SHIT, Susie Dee, Patricia Cornelius and Nicci Wilks have re-teamed to create RUNT, a play about the runts of the world: the lesser, the unwanted, the weak, those without clout, the insignificant; all the unders.

Runt, a small, undernourished woman has endured enough of the misery of being the runt of the litter. She toughens up and attempts to take power, to lead the oppressed, to rise up and fight, for equality, for decency and what’s right. She liberates sack after sack after sack of miserable runts. And she grows. She feels herself reaching eight foot or more. She gets a taste for what it means to be great. Trouble is, ‘greatness forgets runtness‘.

The Tony® and Olivier Award-winning musical Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada that welcomed them all. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

Very Nice Pot Plants To Purify The Air and Enrich Your Life (Theatre Works, Melbourne Australia)
A fern breaks an aloe vera’s heart. A monstera gets loose on a night out. A tiny cactus dreams of a better tomorrow.

This is a show about pot plants. Just imagine actual pot plants on stage. Not pretend ones. Real ones - with hot bodies and great personalities. Doesn’t that sound like a very nice night out at the theatre under stage two restrictions? Yeah, that’s right. You’re so desperate to get out of the house you’ll come see anything. Even pot plants on stage.

Born from this strange sociopolitical moment, POT PLANTS plays with and attempts to speak to the uncanny environment we now find ourselves in. Maybe pot plants have a lot more going on than we give them credit for?

From award-winning theatre makers Karla Livingstone-Pardy (who has a thriving collection of indoor plants) and Zachary Sheridan (who killed his housemate’s ctenanthe while she was in Adelaide. She still doesn’t know).

  • 269: Emerald City (MTC, Melbourne Australia) (review)
    Theatre First Episode 269
    Emerald City (MTC, Melbourne Australia)
Welcome to the glittering jewel in Australia’s cultural crown – that sinkhole of ambition and superficiality we call Sydney. Colin is Australia’s most successful screenwriter, but since moving from Melbourne with his wife Kate he’s been faced with a choice between art and commerce that will define his career forever. Meanwhile, Kate’s star is on the ascent and her latest publication has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Fame and fortune are there for the taking, but big surprises are in store for them both.

Part love-letter, part hate-mail to the harbour city, this is the finest comedy by Australian theatre’s most beloved craftsman and commentator, David Williamson. A panoramic view of the city that tends to prize beauty over brains, Emerald City is a fast-moving, wisecracking commentary on contemporary values that skewers the materialism of the 1980s with razor-sharp precision.

    Theatre First Episode 266
    Slut (The Burrow, Melbourne Australia)
Slut is a powerful indictment of misogyny from one of Australia’s most celebrated playwrights. It follows the rise and fall of Melbourne schoolgirl Lolita, chronicling her fraught journey from girlhood to womanhood.

Inspired by true events and interviews with young women about their sexuality and the ‘slut’ label, Slut is a searing exploration of the female experience that is horribly, undeniably Australian.

Torch The Place (MTC, Melbourne Australia)
Teresa’s mum finds it impossible to let anything go – from grudges to household objects. She thinks of her home as a museum full of irreplaceable treasures. But she’s not really a curator – she’s a hoarder – and her house is enough to give Marie Kondo heart palpitations. When her kids return home to celebrate her 60th birthday, she’s over the moon to have the family back together. This isn’t a reunion. It’s an intervention.

Celebrated TV writer, Benjamin Law (The Family Law) is one of this country’s brightest literary stars. For his hysterically funny and moving stage premiere, Law employs his effortless self-deprecating wit to spark joy in the clutter and find truth in those chaotic moments that bring families closer together.

Renowned director Dean Bryant (The Lady in the Van) brings an irresistible energy to this poignant modern comedy, with a stellar cast including Fiona Choi (The Family Law), Michelle Lim Davidson (An Ideal Husband), Diana Lin (Little Emperors) and Charles Wu (Mosquitoes).

  • 263: CATS (Young Australian Broadway Chorus, Melbourne Australia) (review)
Cats (Young Australian Broadway Chorus, Melbourne Australia)
Based on TS Elliot’s collection of poems ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, and featuring an eclectic score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS has enjoyed record-breaking runs in the West End, on Broadway, and all around the world, and later this year will be released as a major motion picture. Taking its lead from the era of the original poems, which were written by Elliot for his children in the 1930s, our new production will evoke England during the Great Depression.

In a crumbling Music Hall, our band of very theatrical Cats will strut and sing and prance and dance as they gather together for the Jellicle Ball.
    Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot
