Skye Smith… My Nonna, the matriarch of my family. When I developed La Nonna é Qui in 2022, I was still grieving. It was the pandemic, and grieving her was lonely. I couldn’t be around family (remember lockdowns? I don’t want to either) and so I tried to embody her. I put two teaspoons of sugar in my coffee, I made her bolognese, I fed my babies and went for long walks.After a deep chat with my mom, I decided to morph this lonely grieving process into art.Four years later, I get to reassemble this piece in celebration. I’ve found so much stillness and joy in intending to be a Nonna.

This compelling, edge-of-the-seat adventure story is based on the life of author Louise Bradford’s Anishinaabe and French great-great-grandfather, who delivered mail by snowshoe and sled. It offers children an excellent introduction to the important, and often treacherous, work of Indigenous mail carriers, bringing to life a lesser-known part of Indigenous history. Artwork by award-winning illustrator Maya McKibbin perfectly captures Sage’s range of emotions and vividly portrays the snow-covered landscape in shades of blue and white. The story features cultural details in the illustrations as well as Anishinaabemowin words, with a glossary. An author’s note and an introduction from the former chief of Batchewana First Nation, the community of the author and her ancestor, are also included. There are numerous curriculum links throughout to social studies and Indigenous history lessons.

An action-packed picture book inspired by the true experiences of Indigenous mail carriers.

One winter, the weather is so bad in a remote village that the mail can’t be delivered to or from the neighboring community for many weeks. But then, on a clear morning, Sage’s father decides he’ll have enough time before the next storm arrives to transport everyone’s letters and packages on the Snowshoe Express, a dogsled pulled by Nimoosh. When Sage finds an overlooked package in the snow and runs to catch up, she gets to go, too. But then they have a frightening encounter with wolves in the woods, a fast-moving storm threatens to overtake them, and Sage’s excitement turns to fear. Will they (and the mail) be able to get to the other village safely?

Zonta Club of Sault Ste Marie Area is one of over 1,300 clubs of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, Zonta takes its name from the Lakota Sioux Indian word meaning “honest and trustworthy.” Zontians volunteer their time, talents and energy to local and international service projects that are designed to advance the status of women.

Zonta allows you to give of yourself to others, to actively participate in the selection of service projects to help your community, and to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women worldwide.

Established in 1978, the Zonta Club of Sault Ste Marie Area holds its general meetings the first Wednesday of each month. Members relax over dinner, conduct the business of the club and socialize. Regular attendance is encouraged.

The Club has various committees and each member is asked to join a committee of their choice. This committee work defines the service aspect of Zonta membership.

Locally, Zonta is involved in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year. The funds raised flow directly into Zonta’s various service projects. All operating expenses are met with membership dues.

John Joseph Valiquette, more commonly recognized as Jack Valiquette, is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. Valiquette played forward in the National Hockey League. He was born in 1954 from Aylmer, Ontario and was a first round selection in the NHL 1974 Amateur Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. His seven-year professional career also included time playing for the Colorado Rockies. Valiquette was sent to the minors in 1981 and decided to retire from the sport. Throughout his professional career, he played in 350 NHL games where he scored 84 goals and 134 assists.

Taken No. 1 overall in the 1973 Ontario Hockey League draft, he was a highly touted junior and won the Red Tilson Award in his lone season with the Greyhounds. Jack scored 63 goals and amassed 135 points in his lone season as a Soo Greyhound. He turned pro when the Leafs took him in the first round (13th overall) in the 1974 amateur draft.

Jack was the recipient of the Red Tilson Trophy, Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy, and Emms Family Award in his junior career as the outstanding player, the leading scorer, and the leading rookie in the Ontario Hockey League.

Valiquette played 172 games with the Leafs; his best season there was a 45-point campaign in 1976-77. His third and final season with the club was highlighted by its dramatic Game 7 OT Stanley Cup quarterfinal victory over the dynasty-in-waiting New York Islanders. Traded to the Rockies ahead of the 1979-80 campaign, he had 23 and 25 goal seasons for Colorado.

In 2021, Valiquette was named the Carl Brewer Award winner, given to a retired Leaf in recognition of community involvement. Locally, he has helped several causes and been heavily involved with the team’s alumni organization. He also occasionally presents a Leafs sweater to an honoured member of Canada’s military during games at Scotiabank Arena.

Jack still bleeds blue and white and is as anxious and puzzled by the team’s lack of post-season success as anyone.

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Great Lakes Odyssey World is a multi-national effort to strengthen and explore our relationship with the natural wonders known as the Great Lakes.

In this part of the project, we have created a multi-part audio series looking at the way the Great Lakes shape our lives, our livelihoods, our health and our culture.

50 years ago, folks in the media and elsewhere were ready to declare the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie “dead.”

The thought so appalled citizens in Canada and the United States, they forced their national governments to act.

Because, of course, the Great Lakes shape the life of both Canada and the United States. And, of course, the Great Lakes are a single system stretching from Duluth to Ottawa and down the St. Lawrence seaway. What happens to any of the Lakes will soon happen to the others.

So, the politicians of 50 years ago negotiated the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, “for the purpose of restoring, protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes basin.”

50 years later, we can see the agreement worked. We see more fish, cleaner water, and less pollution. Unlike the early settlers and colonials, who mostly saw the Lakes as a resource to tap, we now recognize, like the First Nations, the Lakes are part of our identity. They shape our relationships, our songs and celebrations of place, the way we eat, how we play, and what we make, or sell, or harvest.

50 years since the wake-up call of a burning river, Great Lakes Odyssey wants to learn how we live and love, hurt and restore the incredible gift which is the Great Lakes.

We will explore Great Lakes art and artistic expression, and meet the artists, writers, musicians who make it. We will also dip into Great Lakes history and lore – and learn from the people who have been here the longest and know it the best: The People of the Three Fires, the Anishinabek.

On our Odyssey around the Great Lakes, we will also hear from people working to prevent poisonous algal blooms or stop the spread of invasive species. We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.

Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.

In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.

As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.

So, as we travel around the Great Lakes Basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.

We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.

So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes Basin and Great Lakes culture.

About Your Host

DANNY MOTT was born in England and raised in Canada. Danny has been involved in myriad recordings and in various countries, most notably in Jamaica and Cuba.

Danny’s music is released under the moniker, “Mocombo” where he acts as composer, producer, engineer and musician. Mocombo is a versatile band project that shifts effortlessly between world music, traditional blues, Cuban jazz and blues rock.

Danny has a rich academic background in music that includes various diplomas, degrees and certificates. Danny’s studies include; Classical guitar from the Algoma Conservatory of Music; Composition, performance, music history, music business and retailing from Humber College of Applied Arts; North Indian Hindustani classical music at the Academy Of Eastern Fine Arts; Adult teaching techniques for music at Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology; Music education at the University of Victoria; Studio recording from the Institute of Recording and Arts; Music theory at the Royal Conservatory of Music; Music and anthropology at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Dean’s Honour List; Religious traditions of Islam at the University of Waterloo.

Danny’s music performance and work history are also impressive. As a tour promoter, acts like Gordon Lightfoot and Ravi Shankar; as a music teacher at Nelson Music in B.C.; Music Marketing Director and music technician at Saved By Technology in Toronto, with a client list including the Rolling Stones, Rush, Barenaked Ladies, Jane Siberry, and many more; Marketing and Sales Director for On Publications Inc., a national distribution of music print medium company; Marketing Director for Roy Creations International in Montreal, for the Canadian Recording Industry Association.

Danny has orchestrated several projects, including a film in the Cuban language, with the participation of Cuba’s National Dance Company.

Stacey Davidson was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, growing up in the “P” Patch. She has called Amherstburg, Ontario, home since 1996, where she and her husband Michael have raised their two beautiful children, Rachelle and Katie. Amherstburg is one of the most beautiful places to live, so she is incredibly proud to say that she is from there and to be a part of such an awesome community. Spending time with her family and friends is what makes Stacey happy. Her parents and siblings all reside in the Sault, so much of her vacation time is spent there with her mom and dad, Wayne and Cathie Bishop, and her extended family, including her siblings, Mark, Susan and Richard. Rhyming and riddles have always come easily to Stacey, so she has used this talent to write and to create stories, poems and even road-rally scavenger hunts.

We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.

Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.

In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.

As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.

So, as we travel around the Great Lakes Basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.

We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.

So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes Basin and Great Lakes culture.
