CREATIVES > Annie King – CanArt Designs a Better Future

CanArt is a structured, skills-based visual arts program designed for children and teens. Running from September to June, it offers a clear progression in artistic development, combining technical skill-building with creativity and critical thinking. Each year culminates in a professional exhibition, where students present their work in the gallery at the Sault Ste Marie Museum.

Annie King believes art education should grow with each student, combining strong foundational training with opportunities for personal expression. Through the CanArt Badge Certification program and exhibition experiences, she is passionate about creating a learning environment where creativity, curiosity, and dedication are celebrated. As CanArt expands, Annie’s role ensures that every class, exhibition, and learning experience reflects the studio’s commitment to thoughtful, high-quality arts education.

Brandon Schmitt, our Director of Operations & Community, supports the behind-the-scenes work that allow creativity to thrive. He keeps systems organized making families feel welcome and supported. Brandon brings steadiness, clarity, and kindness to everything he does. As CanArt continues to grow, his role helps ensure the studio remains both creatively ambitious and thoughtfully run.

The GREAT LAKES ODYSSEY Radio Hour – The Boreal Forest

The Great Lakes Odyssey Radio Hour is broadcast on National Public Radio (WCMU-NPR)

s1.e3 GREAT LAKES ODYSSEY Radio Hour – The GLO Odyssey takes a deep dive into the boreal forest and its relationship to the human experience and how it affects the Great Lakes.

The Canadian boreal region is the largest area of wetlands in the world’s ecosystems. The north shore of the world’s largest fresh water lake, Superior, is home to the boreal. It is a vast land of magnificent wildlife, inland lakes and rivers, and forests of deciduous and coniferous trees that serve as lungs of the planet. It is in this area where the largest number of Indigenous First Nations make their home. And it is in these forests where industry, once unchecked, has put the ecosystems in danger.

Joanie McGuffin, Canadian explorer, conservationist, writer and motivational speaker on the Boreal Forest. Owen Neill, late Canadian poet performs Walking In Forests. Dean Sayers on Indigenous industry and asserting the land and forests of Gargantua. Joe Reilly, singer, songwriter, social worker, and educator from Michigan who writes tree songs from his heart.

    Great Lakes Odyssey World

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Great Lakes Odyssey World is a multi-national effort to strengthen and explore our relationship with the natural wonders known as the Great Lakes.

In this part of the project, we have created a multi-part audio series looking at the way the Great Lakes shape our lives, our livelihoods, our health and our culture.

50 years ago, folks in the media and elsewhere were ready to declare the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie “dead.”

The thought so appalled citizens in Canada and the United States, they forced their national governments to act.

Because, of course, the Great Lakes shape the life of both Canada and the United States. And, of course, the Great Lakes are a single system stretching from Duluth to Ottawa and down the St. Lawrence seaway. What happens to any of the Lakes will soon happen to the others.

So, the politicians of 50 years ago negotiated the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, “for the purpose of restoring, protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes basin.”

50 years later, we can see the agreement worked. We see more fish, cleaner water, and less pollution. Unlike the early settlers and colonials, who mostly saw the Lakes as a resource to tap, we now recognize, like the First Nations, the Lakes are part of our identity. They shape our relationships, our songs and celebrations of place, the way we eat, how we play, and what we make, or sell, or harvest.

50 years since the wake-up call of a burning river, Great Lakes Odyssey wants to learn how we live and love, hurt and restore the incredible gift which is the Great Lakes.

We will explore Great Lakes art and artistic expression, and meet the artists, writers, musicians who make it. We will also dip into Great Lakes history and lore – and learn from the people who have been here the longest and know it the best: The People of the Three Fires, the Anishinaabek.

On our Odyssey around the Great Lakes, we will also hear from people working to prevent poisonous algal blooms or stop the spread of invasive species. We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.

Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.

In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.

As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.

So, as we travel around the Great Lakes basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinaabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.

We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.

So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes basin and Great Lakes culture.

Jeffrey Wright – The Journey to the Big Stage

The Purple Hill Country Opry is located just 2 miles North of Hwy #2 on Purple Hill Road, near Thorndale, Ontario. Opry shows are on the first Sunday of every month, featuring great Canadian talent from Country Music Hall of Famers and Top Recording Artists, to Juno Award winners and budding stars on the way up! Jeffrey Wright is one of those performers.

Jeffrey has long been a country music performer with aspirations of someday hitting the big-time, the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, Tennessee. While playing Purple Hill, Wright’s sound caught the attention of country artist and producer, Brian Moon. Moon asked Jeffrey to accept an invitation to a Montreal recording session with Nashville-based Clarksville Creative Sound, and country songwriter and producer Curt Ryle. Jeffrey said yes, and recorded three of his songs from his back catalog.

Serving families is our passion, our commitment and our expertise. Whether you’re planning a funeral or cremation service for a loved one, or making your own arrangements in advance, meaningful life celebrations begin with Dignity Memorial’s compassionate funeral and event planners.

For Dignity Memorial providers, there is no greater honour than helping to remember a life lived. We are dedicated, local professionals committed to getting every detail right, every time. We do this by listening, caring and guiding each and every family who walks through our doors. It’s why we’ve become a trusted part of the communities we serve and why families consistently give us 5-star ratings for exceptional care.

Barton & Kiteley Chapel provides funeral, memorial and celebration of life ceremonies to the Sault Ste. Marie community and surrounding areas. We conduct services for families of all cultural and religious backgrounds. We are centrally located and honoured to serve families throughout the Algoma District.

Our staff is the largest funeral home team in the area, with the most combined years of experience. We are dedicated to assisting with all of your funeral needs. We are proud to be among the few companies that received the J.D. Power President’s Award for our commitment to customer satisfaction in 2016.

We care about Sault Ste. Marie
Our community involvement reaches approximately 100 areas with staff memberships in different service clubs and organizations. We not only work during normal business hours, we spend many hours out in the Sault Ste. Marie community and surrounding areas, supporting events, serving on boards and providing education. Our associates participate with the Masons, Eastern Star, YMCA, MS Society, Alzheimer’s Society and many others.

Here are a few more ways we make a positive impact on the community:

We sponsor Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, including the Rotaryfest, Easter Seals Telethon and Thrive Child Development Centre.

For more than 20 years, we’ve decorated a Christmas tree to raise money for the Algoma Lung Association at its Festival of Trees. The decorated trees are auctioned off in late November, and each tree typically raises around $1,500 for the cause.

For Operation Christmas Child, we collect shoeboxes from community partners, businesses and schools with useful items to be given to less fortunate children, so those kids can celebrate the holidays.

We’re regulars at The Soo Sings for Kids. Each year, our team competes in a song and dance competition. The winner gets $5,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. Our charity is the Jumpstart Charity via the Canadian Tire Association. We regularly place in the top three.

We have sponsored and participated in the Bon Soo Winter Carnival for many years.

We sponsor a program to help combat teenage drinking deaths with PARTY (Preventing Alcohol Related Trauma in Youth). The program sends guest speakers to high schools to promote its “contract for life” idea. Additionally, we participate and sponsor the Sweet Life Roadshow—an interactive experience to raise awareness among teens about road risks and show simple strategies for staying safe on the road.

We participate in the Lions Club Rose Day, delivering roses to nursing homes and other members of the community.

People on our staff also coach and help support local ringette teams. Our funeral home has sponsored Arthur’s Angels for more than 20 years.

We have had the privilege to sponsor a family suite at the new Usi Koti part of the Ontario Finnish Resthome. The suite gives family members a comfortable environment to stay near their loved ones for a visit or when attending to a loved one who has passed.

We are involved with the Military Support Group, assisting with bringing fallen servicemen and servicewomen home for final arrangements.

We also help with many other community programs: Gideons, 100 Women/Men Who Care, Algoma University, Community Living Algoma, Heart & Stroke, Cancer Society, Algoma Family Services, Cub Scouts, Soup Kitchen and others.

We’ve been a member of the Chamber of Commerce for more than 60 years.

Nearly 5,000 rivers, tributaries and aquifers flow into the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, they are the lifeblood of the Great Lakes. Villages, towns and cities populate the lands drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings that infuses the local culture and folklore. The Lakes are connected, their history intertwined, their story shared. As life around the Great Lakes basin shapes in relation to its immediate environment the river can sing and dance yet still tell sad tales of abuse and lack of respect for the waters. The rivers, the blood that pumps life into the Great Lakes, ask the utmost respect to live always.

Having grown up on the borderline of the USA, and picking up that great late night blues radio, coming clear from Detroit and Chicago, we grew up accustomed to blues power. It was coming from everywhere. It makes for a vast reservoir of musical knowledge and experience to draw from.

Livewire Blues Power plays classic recordings from the all-time blues greats, as well as blues from around the world rooted in the tradition, and Livewire Blues Power also introduces the music of the Soo’s blues artists to blues fans everywhere.

“Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy’s playing blues like we play, he’s in high school. When he starts playing jazz it’s like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.”
