Music has always been a big part of Rick’s life. Some of his earliest recollections are of being seated beside his mom, an accomplished classical pianist, on a piano bench, listening while she played.
Rick started his career playing in iconic Toronto R&B bands like The Imperials and The Majestics. In 1968, he changed musical paths and began recording and touring with Gordon Lightfoot. Rick has played on most of Gordon’s albums, starting with “Sunday Concert” and including “Sundown” and “Summertime Dream” and is the bass player on many of Lightfoot’s hits including “If You Could Read My Mind”, “Carefree Highway”, “Beautiful” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Mike Heffernan was born in Kitchener, Ontario and raised in Montreal and the Toronto area. He currently lives in the Toronto area.
Musical Background: Mike played guitar in bands until age 18 but was always intrigued by the piano and the Hammond organ. His father was a professional piano player, so Mike picked up a lot of technique and theory just by watching and listening. As a keyboard player he went on to perform and record with a number of Canadian artists.
History with Gordon Lightfoot: Mike was called in for a session in early November 1980 to record the theme song for a movie Gord had just acted in: “Harry Tracy Desperado.” The session evolved into an audition and Mike was officially hired on December 23, 1980. His first show with the band was at the Mill Run Theatre in Chicago in January ’81 and the first album he appeared on was Shadows. Mike played in Gord’s band for forty-one years.
Highlights With Gord: Royal Albert Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Massey Hall in Toronto.
Bill Bell is a guitarist, musical director, and producer, born in Oakville, Ontario, and currently living in Toronto.
Music has been a lifelong passion for Bill. He began playing guitar at 9 yrs old and over the years has developed a deep appreciation for tone, songwriting, and live performance.
Over the course of his career, Bill has worked with a wide range of internationally recognized artists. He spent more than a decade as musical director and guitarist for Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, touring extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and South America while performing on major television programs and world stages.
Bill has also performed and recorded with many notable Canadian artists, including Tom Cochrane and Andy Kim, and is known as a versatile and enthusiastic collaborator both on stage and in the studio.
Bill’s guitar style is rooted in clarity, feel, and respect for the song, making him well suited to performing and preserving the character of Gordon Lightfoot’s music.
Bill now performs as guitarist with The Lightfoot Band, where he is dedicated to honoring the integrity, spirit, and timeless quality of Gordon Lightfoot’s songs.
Andy Mauck is from Worthington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. He started playing guitar when he was about 14 – Andy attributes his interest in learning to play the guitar to when he first heard the songs of Gordon Lightfoot. He learned by playing and singing along with his records and music became a passion in his life that has carried on to this day.
After high school Andy worked a variety of jobs, including scuba instructor and bartender. His career later turned in a more formal direction when he became a Project Engineer for a large fire truck manufacturer, designing, coordinating and constructing the custom-ordered trucks. Andy left that job to start his own business, designing and manufacturing unique, high-end mini buses used in the entertainment industry. His customers included Alan Jackson, Quincy Jones, George Foreman, Disney, and other high-profile clients. Andy enjoyed more success creating designs used in the luxury auto industry.
Andy retired to the US Virgin Islands and later to Punta Gorda Florida. In recent years, after playing music for fun for decades, he began playing bar gigs – always showcasing Lightfoot tunes.
Andy met Gord and the band in 1976, and in the following years got to know them well. “My idols became my friends, and now I am beyond honored to join them in keeping Gord’s songs alive on stage”.
Running time: 38 minutes.

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Great Lakes Odyssey World is a multi-national effort to strengthen and explore our relationship with the natural wonders known as the Great Lakes.
In this part of the project, we have created a multi-part audio series looking at the way the Great Lakes shape our lives, our livelihoods, our health and our culture.
50 years ago, folks in the media and elsewhere were ready to declare the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie “dead.”
The thought so appalled citizens in Canada and the United States, they forced their national governments to act.
Because, of course, the Great Lakes shape the life of both Canada and the United States. And, of course, the Great Lakes are a single system stretching from Duluth to Ottawa and down the St. Lawrence seaway. What happens to any of the Lakes will soon happen to the others.
So, the politicians of 50 years ago negotiated the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, “for the purpose of restoring, protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes basin.”
50 years later, we can see the agreement worked. We see more fish, cleaner water, and less pollution. Unlike the early settlers and colonials, who mostly saw the Lakes as a resource to tap, we now recognize, like the First Nations, the Lakes are part of our identity. They shape our relationships, our songs and celebrations of place, the way we eat, how we play, and what we make, or sell, or harvest.
50 years since the wake-up call of a burning river, Great Lakes Odyssey wants to learn how we live and love, hurt and restore the incredible gift which is the Great Lakes.
We will explore Great Lakes art and artistic expression, and meet the artists, writers, musicians who make it. We will also dip into Great Lakes history and lore – and learn from the people who have been here the longest and know it the best: The People of the Three Fires, the Anishinaabek.
On our Odyssey around the Great Lakes, we will also hear from people working to prevent poisonous algal blooms or stop the spread of invasive species. We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.
Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.
In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.
As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.
So, as we travel around the Great Lakes basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinaabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.
We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.
So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes basin and Great Lakes culture.

The blues tradition began in North America, coming out of the very soul of the earth. Blood, sweat and tears enriched the fertile ground that formed the roots that fed the soul of the people. It exuded itself through the music, we are the blues.

Money matters, as a noun and as a verb. Money matters a lot as a matter of fact. We know it’s important, but at what cost? The discussion is about dealing with money and living a full life, simultaneously. Is it about amassing wealth at all costs? Is it about spending time doing all the things money lets you? Where is the balance that money matters leave room for life? There are a lot of factors to consider. The ladies invite Financial Planner, Jodi Nastor, to help solve the equation.
