  • Meaghan Kent – The Scars That Bind Us
Meaghan Kent – The Scars That Bind Us

Writing has and will always be my first love in life.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been writing stories. I used to sit in my little twin bed, writing tales of adventure in binders on lined paper in blue and black ink. They never amounted to much. And no one ever read them. But it was in that little girl’s twin bed that my biggest dream in life was born: to be a published author.

I always wanted to write fiction, specifically romance. And I always wanted to incorporate my love for the north as well as history into the work in some way. Literary history is what I studied in school, so is it surprising that my debut novel blends the literary genres as well? Women’s fiction with romance, with a teensy-tiny bit of history. Plus, the novel takes place on Manitoulin Island, which in my opinion, is the perfect escape in both fiction and reality.

    The Scars that Bind Us

You can run. You can hide. But you can never escape the scars of the past.

These are the hard lessons aspiring writer Kaydence Fletcher must learn.

Fleeing to Lake Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island in search of freedom and inspiration, Kaydence buys a year-round holiday home that promises summers spent on the beach and winters skating on a frozen lake—the perfect place to start over and pen her debut novel. Or so she thinks…

Haunted by her past, Kaydence traps herself inside her A-frame cabin and becomes consumed by hysteric paranoia, loneliness, and her irrational fear of bears.

It’s not until Calvin McIntosh mistakenly knocks on her door that Kaydence reluctantly steps outside the comfort of her walls and finds solace in northern Ontario. Swimming in waterfalls, the Aurora Borealis, muddy ATV escapades, and a canoe named Sheila, become the backdrop of her new Manitoulin Island identity.

But can you really start over when you wear the scars of your past?

  • Mari Padeanu – Jazzing Up The Fool
Mari Padeanu – Jazzing Up The Fool

Mari Padeanu will be taking her trio on tour in 2027. They stop in Sault Ste. Marie on July 27, 2027, at The Whisky Barrel on Gore Street.

Instantly deep, comfortably playful, Mari Padeanu is a queer musician from Winnipeg, Manitoba, known for their intricate harmony, melody, and lyricism. Mari draws vocal inspiration from jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker, musical
inspiration from Motown legends like Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, and more modern inspiration from Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, and Adele.

Their lyrics read like a friends’ journal you’ve stumbled upon — personal, raw, and honest. Complimented by a unique blend of
jazz, R&B, pop, and their deep alto range, they “decorate funk and pop grooves with romantic whimsy” (Winnipeg Free Press).

They released their first EP, The Fool, in February of 2025, and have recently performed at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Fringe Festival, Winnipeg Pride, GentleFest, Salamander Summer Music Fest, and more. Mari’s next EP, “Slob”, releases in March 2027, with Canadian tour dates set for July 2027.

Outside of performing, Mari is a dedicated teacher at The Music Cellar, and also takes on private students. Their students have gone on to play leads in musicals and get into university music programs. Mari is also the creator, writer, and illustrator of Winnipeg Musician Zine.

This interview was conducted by Director and Filmmaker, Jimmie Chiverelli.

    Great Lakes Odyssey World

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Great Lakes Odyssey World is a multi-national effort to strengthen and explore our relationship with the natural wonders known as the Great Lakes.

In this part of the project, we have created a multi-part audio series looking at the way the Great Lakes shape our lives, our livelihoods, our health and our culture.

50 years ago, folks in the media and elsewhere were ready to declare the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie “dead.”

The thought so appalled citizens in Canada and the United States, they forced their national governments to act.

Because, of course, the Great Lakes shape the life of both Canada and the United States. And, of course, the Great Lakes are a single system stretching from Duluth to Ottawa and down the St. Lawrence seaway. What happens to any of the Lakes will soon happen to the others.

So, the politicians of 50 years ago negotiated the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, “for the purpose of restoring, protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes basin.”

50 years later, we can see the agreement worked. We see more fish, cleaner water, and less pollution. Unlike the early settlers and colonials, who mostly saw the Lakes as a resource to tap, we now recognize, like the First Nations, the Lakes are part of our identity. They shape our relationships, our songs and celebrations of place, the way we eat, how we play, and what we make, or sell, or harvest.

50 years since the wake-up call of a burning river, Great Lakes Odyssey wants to learn how we live and love, hurt and restore the incredible gift which is the Great Lakes.

We will explore Great Lakes art and artistic expression, and meet the artists, writers, musicians who make it. We will also dip into Great Lakes history and lore – and learn from the people who have been here the longest and know it the best: The People of the Three Fires, the Anishinaabek.

On our Odyssey around the Great Lakes, we will also hear from people working to prevent poisonous algal blooms or stop the spread of invasive species. We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.

Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.

In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.

As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.

So, as we travel around the Great Lakes basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinaabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.

We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.

So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes basin and Great Lakes culture.

    LIVEWIRE BLUES POWER

The blues tradition began in North America, coming out of the very soul of the earth. Blood, sweat and tears enriched the fertile ground that formed the roots that fed the soul of the people. It exuded itself through the music, we are the blues.

Having grown up on the borderline of the USA, and picking up that great late night blues radio, coming clear from Detroit and Chicago, we grew up accustomed to blues power. It was coming from everywhere. It makes for a vast reservoir of musical knowledge and experience to draw from.

Livewire Blues Power plays classic recordings from the all-time blues greats, as well as blues from around the world rooted in the tradition, and Livewire Blues Power also introduces the music of the Soo’s blues artists to blues fans everywhere.

Produced by the Universe Over 60, celebrating the stories of women over 60 through an insightful, humorous and irreverent lens.

Sister Sophia Kicks the Habit is a conversation with God. It’s a confessional. It’s a liberation of the body and mind and celebration of the spirit. In her own restless night of the soul, Sister Sophia delves into humorous and insightful musings as she experiences an awakening of the body, mind and spirit.

Lisa Randall is an award-winning playwright, singer, actor. Her play, The Sorauren Book Club, received Patron’s Pick Award at the 2022 Toronto Fringe. In the summer of 2025, Sister Sophia premiered at the Hamilton Fringe to critical reviews and then played the Edinburgh and Victoria Fringe Festivals and the Gabriola Theatre Festival, summer 2026.

4 Star Review – Mary Woodward, ScotsGay Arts – Edinburgh

“Magnificent. Lisa Randall is magnificent as Sophia. Her superbly mobile, expressive face speaks volumes; her speaking voice is wonderfully flexible; but it’s her singing voice that is the highlight of this piece for me. Whether it be singing a traditional Latin adoramus te, an intriguing twist on Ave Maria, two gorgeous new compositions and an unforgettable rendition of Tom Lehrer’s Vatican Rag [which itself is worth the ticket price], it’s an aural joy and delight that brings life and colour to what could be, but most definitely isn’t, a monotonous monologue.”

  • Jodi L. Nastor – Leave Room for Life: Money Matters. But LIFE Matters More.
Jodi L. Nastor – Leave Room for Life: Money Matters. But LIFE Matters More.

Jodi L. Nastor has spent more than two decades helping people navigate money, change, and the unexpected turns life can take. A Certified Financial Planner professional, she believes financial planning is about far more than investments–it’s about understanding what matters most to the person sitting across from you.

Leave Room for Life grew from stories, conversations and lessons Jodi has gathered along the way, along with a belief she comes back to again and again: Money matters. But LIFE matters more.

Jodi lives in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where she is actively involved in her community and continues to walk alongside people through the many chapters of life.

Leave Room for Life: Money matters. But LIFE matters more.

“Am I going to be okay?”

It’s one of the most common questions I’ve heard throughout my career..

It may begin with money, but it’s rarely just about finances.

Because life isn’t always a straight line.

It’s about retirement, divorce, being widowed, relationships, illness, loss, starting over, family, purpose, and wondering what comes next.

As a Certified Financial Planner®, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside people through some of life’s biggest moments. Together we’ve planned for retirement, developed tax-efficient strategies, coordinated estate and legacy planning, celebrated new beginnings, and navigated unexpected challenges. Along the way, I’ve learned that the best financial decisions are often the ones that reflect what matters most.

LIFE isn’t about having more. It’s about making thoughtful financial decisions that support the life you want to live.

Through personal stories, honest reflections, and lessons learned over a lifetime, you’ll discover that financial planning isn’t just about numbers. It’s about creating a life that aligns with your values, your priorities, and the people you love.

Throughout the book, you’ll also find thoughtful reflection pages designed to help you pause, consider where you are today, and explore what matters most. They’re not exercises to complete–they’re invitations to think more deeply about the life you’re creating and the decisions that will shape it.

Whether you’re planning for retirement, facing an unexpected life transition, starting over, or simply asking, “What’s next?” Leave Room for Life offers reassurance, perspective, and practical wisdom to help you move forward with confidence.

Because sometimes the greatest gift isn’t having all the answers.

    It’s having someone remind you…

    You’re going to be okay.

    Money matters. But
    LIFE matters more.
