  • The Bunker Podcast 220: Craig Gonzalez
    artist statement:
I don’t think it’s a stretch for me to say that I really enjoy making mixes. I like challenging myself while exploring different sounds and rhythms and mixes give me a chance to play around without the added pressure of the dance floor. Context is key and in this regard, I always try to take into the consideration the environment the mixes are consumed by the listener. So I tend to make more headier mixes due to them probably being listened to at home or maybe work. I started this one out coming in a little “hot” before getting into the headier bits about a third of the way in. I did this because I wanted the momentum to carry though the headier section of the mix before bringing it slightly up again. I feel it helps the listener stay focused and engaged to the very end. - @craig-gonzalez

  • The Bunker Podcast 219: Davide Gualandi
    Davide Gualandi bio:
@daviday grew up in Italy. He played in some bad hardcore bands
in the 90s and wrote for some fairly respected music magazines in the 2000s. He DJs noisy psychedelic music and supports the weirdos who populate the NYC scene.
    About the mix:
"My midlife crisis brought me to the inevitable purchase of a rotary
mixer. Since I'm bad at mixing anyway, I bought a MasterSounds Radius 4, which just features an hi-pass filter on each channel instead of the usual EQs. I wanted to make a dance mix for a long time, but it's taking me a bit to learn how to DJ on this thing. Maybe I'll sell it and buy a Pioneer. Anyway, the mix is made of a lot of unreleased tracks that friends have sent me, plus some classics on Djax-Up-Beats, Viewlexx and L.I.E.S. I tend to open nights or play "yurt sets", so I took unusual and weird tracks and tried to make it dancey for the party that initiated me to techno." - Davide

  • The Bunker Podcast 218: HE VALENCIA
@he_valencia is an Indiana midwest based dj, producer, cultural theorist and techno historian who has been active in North American techno since 2010, hotly tipped by the likes of DJ Stingray, Jamal Moss & Carlos Souffront. He contributes to the long legacy of black midwest techno by exploring the many permeations and intersections of techno and other electronic dance music.
artist statement: "this particular mix is a direct reflection of my position geographically and sonically, being located between the legacies of Chicago and Detroit. i consider myself a student of the game and always want my sets to reflect the energy of being able to navigate between many different styles of techno or house. Part of this mix is an amalgamation of records that i've been playing throughout the past few years touring and learning about who i am as a dj and finally hitting a point of fluidity to express myself sonically. To me, midwest techno legacy has always been about being able to stitch many different styles together in a consistent way and i hope this mix reflects that".

  • The Bunker Podcast 217: Ken Meier
artist statement: "Music has maybe been the only enjoyable escape for me during the pandemic, and my relationship to it has taken on a new shape given that I only listen at home alone, mainly on headphones, and at odd hours. I’ve used Ableton to DJ for over a decade now, and this mix is no exception—though I wanted to do something different here, given these new listening patterns. So this is more of a 'mega mix’ style studio session, with lots of layering, edits, and quick transitions. A bit phrenetic, but the intention was to reflect some of the unease and uncertainty of the moment, while revisiting tracks I played at my last two in-person gigs in New York alongside many favorites from my years growing up in Chicago." @ken-meier

  • The Bunker Podcast 216: Amourette
This week's edition of The Bunker Podcast comes from @amourette, who is the resident DJ and co-producer of one of NYC's best and most interesting parties, Weird Science. you can check out their amazing archive of recordings here: https://soundcloud.com/liveatmagickcity/sets/weird-science
For this mix, Ania did something different. here is her artist's statement:
""Hi there, Maybe I am not so well known for "going hard", since for the last two years I’ve been concentrating, along with my co-conspirators, to play and curate non-standard club energy, at our Weird Science parties. Buuuuut I also always collect dark electro and distorted techno, and have been itching to put these tracks into a high energy set. Here it is! Mostly vinyl, recorded in one take on March 30, 2020. Think of it as a tool for releasing pent up energy, perhaps good for solo raving, HIIT workouts, hardcore bread-making, or whatever floats your fucken boat. Wishing you well, and thank you for listening. Love, Ania "

  • Pizzaboy "Deep Dish" EP (The Bunker New York BK-042) CLIPS
When Max Ravitz created a few tracks under his new alias Pizzaboy, they were never meant to be released. One friend passed them on to another, until the tracks were in the hands of Mike Servito — quickly becoming regulars in his rotation. As the name aptly suggests, Deep Dish is a body-ode to Ravitz’s upbringing in Chicago. Known for his varied production aliases and prolific releases as Patricia, Ravitz finds a vehicle for some of his earliest midwestern influences in this debut release for The Bunker NY.
An avid listener of booty house in his youth, Ravitz gravitated towards the genre’s quintessential jacking energy, but couldn’t relate as much to its lyrics. He says, “I’ve always loved it, but didn’t totally connect with some of the messaging, so the first song I made was me trying to flip the archetype and make consent-focused lyrics.” Deep Dish is an expression of Ravitz’ love for the genre, though he refashions and recontextualizes some of its central characteristics. For example, lyrics from “No Affection,” subvert the standard, sexualized vocal tropes; instead we get “Face up, ass down / Let me pull out your chair / I’m a different kind of man you see / I’m more self-aware.” Deep Dish is booty house for 2020, envisioned through a different, perhaps more sensitive lens. Despite Pizzaboy’s alternate take on booty house, these three supreme cuts are still built for peak-time floors. Baked with just enough acid and heat, Deep Dish is primed to be a dance floor classic, feeding both body and soul.
