A normal night can flip into chaos fast: Halloween pickups at 4:30 a.m., no sleep, and the kind of parenting problem-solving you cannot schedule. We start there, laughing through the stress, then stumble into a bigger question that hangs over everything lately: what if the next disruption is not a rough morning, but a long power outage or supply chain breakdown that leaves people on their own?
We react to clips about the Pentagon updating “nightmare scenario” planning and the idea that military bases want to operate independently for 90 days. From there, we talk preparedness in plain language, not fantasy bunker stuff. We get into water storage you can do right now, including using your water heater as backup, plus shelf-stable food, simple lighting, and why sanitation becomes a real problem when pumps stop. We also touch the uncomfortable side of “being ready”: how a loud generator can draw attention, why staying low profile matters, and how fast society can shift when panic spreads.
Along the way, we hit the other stuff on our minds: politics frustration, distrust of government messaging, and even the weird ways stories get used to distract people. We keep it personal, grounded, and focused on protecting your family without living scared.
If you listened and realized you are not ready for a 72-hour setback, let alone 30 to 90 days, start small and build from there. Subscribe, share the show with a friend who needs a nudge to prep calmly, and leave a review with your best “first step” for grid-down readiness.

Episode 1 Season 4
The Host: Joe, Remo, and Thee Gooch
Send us Fan Mail
Ken W. Good, Texas bail attorney and a board member of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas.
Overview: Are electronic monitoring and no-cash bail policies putting public safety at risk?
The debate has taken on new urgency following the recent case out of Houston, where Lee Gilley, a capital murder defendant accused of killing his pregnant wife, allegedly removed his ankle monitor and fled the United States. He booked and boarded an international flight, ultimately reaching Italy before authorities were even aware he had gone missing.
Gilley’s GPS device triggered a tampering alert on May 1. But due to inconsistencies with Harris County’s after-hours monitoring protocols, including delayed communication between the monitoring vendor, Pretrial Services and law enforcement, no immediate action was taken. In fact, it took roughly 60 hours before the court and prosecutors were even notified that he had fled.
By that point, Gilley had already left the country.
The case has raised serious questions about whether electronic monitoring systems are capable of preventing flight in high-risk cases or whether they function primarily as after-the-fact tracking tools. It has also drawn renewed scrutiny to staffing and response gaps within Harris County’s Pretrial Services, particularly during nights and weekends when violations may not be acted upon in real time.
The incident has now attracted attention from state leadership as well, with Texas governor Greg Abbott signaling support for future legislative efforts to tighten bail rules and address failures in electronic monitoring systems involving violent offenders and bail jumpers.
Supporters of bail reform continue to argue that the issue lies not in the policy itself, but in implementation, funding and judicial discretion. But high-profile cases like this one are intensifying public scrutiny and fueling a broader national conversation about whether current systems adequately protect public safety in cases involving violent defendants.
Talking points may include:
-- Whether electronic monitoring is a reliable alternative to detention for high-risk defendants
-- The role judicial discretion plays in pretrial release decisions under no-cash bail systems
-- Whether recent cases point to systemic flaws or failures in implementation
-- How policymakers can balance reform efforts with the need to protect public safety
