Enterprise 01x014 - Sleeping Dogs Directed by: Les Landau Written by: Fred Dekker Klingon episodes tend to be judged pretty harshly by most of our group, but this one managed to beat the odds, and not just because 90% of the Klingons are unconscious the whole time. And you know what? I think I speak for all of us when I say how glad I am that Hoshi finally dug deep and discovered latent talents for demolitions we all knew she had.
Join Anna Heiser, Jason Allen, Joe Heiser and Joshua B. Jones as we discuss the fourteenth episode of Enterprise, Sleeping Dogs.

Moral ambiguity and ethical dilemmas abound in Star Trek.
This episode puts Archer and Phlox at odds as they decide their roles in the fate of two species. This episode also put your hosts at odds as they wrestled with their own questions. Did Archer make the right choice? Was Phlox being reasonable? Is Crewman Cutler perfect?

Time travel episodes, man.
We go a little off the rails now and again this episode as we try to dissect the motives of our time traveling crewman, straighten out the logic of time travel, and argue over the physics of grav-plating. This episode is absolutely riddled with spoilers.
The audio is a little funny on this as Joe and Anna had to share a mic, but that should be fixed by next episode!

Confused? You may have noticed this is not the next production or release episode. We finally hit that point where the idea behind this podcast takes shape, though in an odd way.
This episode, despite being released as 01x12, is next in chronological order. Following Fortunate Son (01x10) and preceding Cold Front (01x11). An oversight by the writers? Who knows, it's canon now.
After getting pushed into the mud a few too many times by an unidentified ship, Archer realizes incredibly ineffective weapon systems just aren't going to cut it and orders the Enterprise to return to Jupiter Station for some much needed upgrades. Meanwhile Hoshi bakes a cake.
Everyone but Joe hates Reed during this recording. I don't know why they're so mean.

Sorry LeVar Burton, we love you, but we just don't love your episodes :(
This episode had the potential to be interesting, just as Travis Mayweather's backstory had the potential to be interesting, but it was undermined by awkward dialog, direction, and acting. It's a shame! No other series could have explored long haul freighters quite like Enterprise might have been able to.

The Enterprise stumbles upon a populated planet and a nefarious plot. The crew fails to keep a low profile and enlists the help of a local.
Also Archer just cannot keep it in his pants.

Shran and the Andorians finally appear! What should have been a fun family outing to the local Vulcan monastery turns sour as Archer and Co. are held hostage. This episode also starts to hint that the Vulcans of this era might not be quite the same Vulcans we're familiar with in the later series.
This is one of those more universally loved Enterprise episodes. Not to say they peaked at episode seven, but that such a positively received episode happened in the first season says something, no?
We're short one of our hosts this week, but we make up for it with general rambling and chuckling.
