There Can Be Only Fun! episodes

  • Episode 36 – Teen Witch & The B-52’s Cosmic Thing

This week we cast a spell of confusion over the ‘classic’ Teen Witch. Then we pile into the love shack for a discussion about The B-52’s big comeback album Cosmic Thing. Now who would ever really wanna go and top that?

Our special guest this week is the lovely Alia Miller of the excellent podcast What She’s Having. Check it out!

  • Episode 35 – Tango and Cash & Milli Vanilli’s Girl You Know It’s True

This week we’ll be travelling back to revisit Tango and Cash, a couple of tough, wisecracking cops who kick ass, take names and rarely make any sense. This movie has everything: action, comedy (?), and great smelling mice. Plus, we’ll be getting two scoops of Vanilli when we discuss Girl You Know It’s True by Milli Vanilli!

Our co-pilot on this armoured super-truck into madness is actor Gavin Fox (Alphas, Flashpoint, Nikita). Come with us!

  • Episode 34 – Friday the 13th: Part 8 & Lou Reed’s New York

The boys of Time Bandits board a slow boat bound for the shores of New York City. There they face the danger of getting their heads punched off, or worse yet, having to sit through Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan. While there, they drop in on Lou Reed as he teaches them the ins and outs of New York (and verbosity) with his aptly titled album, New York.

Their first mate on the voyage is the delightful Ariel Fisher (Row Three, Rue Morgue Magazine). Follow her on Twitter!

  • Episode 33 – Cyborg & Simply Saucer’s Cyborg Revisited

This week Greg, Dan and Casey travel back in time to experience Jean-Claude Van Damme’s eye-popping classic,Cyborg. Watch as JCVD kind of fights his way to Atlanta to briefly meet a cyborg who doesn’t need his help. It’s insane!

Then we find complexity in Simply Saucer‘s Cyborg Revisited, one of rock history’s most tragically under-appreciated bands and albums.

Joining us on the journey back is one half of Modern Superior’s own DrinkAlong Podcast, David Followes.

  • Episode 32 – Shocker & Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique

This week we travel back to bear witness to what is arguably Wes Craven’s least cohesive and silliest film, the crapfest that is Shocker. Then we all geek out on the genius that is Paul’s Boutique, the Beastie Boys’ mind blowing follow up their debut rap album, Licensed To Ill.

Jeremy Schultz of Modern Superior’s own DrinkAlong Podcast is our esteemed guest this week. You won’t want to miss it!

  • Episode 31 – The Abyss, Deepstar Six, Leviathan, and Billy Joel’s Stormfront

This week’s episode is a very special one as we dive deep to uncover the mysteries of underwater aliens in not one but three classic (alright, one classic, one underrated and one suck-fest) films from 1989: The Abyss ,Leviathan and DeepStar Six.

Then we head up to the surface to weather Billy Joel’s Storm Front, an album most notable for it’s inclusion of the hit song We Didn’t Start The Fire.

Such a huge undertaking requires a very special guest, which we have found in fellow Toronto podcaster Matt Price (MAMO! Podcast). Well-versed in the nerdery of shitty sci-fi, his input here is invaluable. Check it out!

  • Episode 30 – Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure & The Stone Roses

Episode 30 finds the boys being excellent to each other while at the same time partying on with 1989’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Then they painstakingly dissect the seminal album Stone Roses (Self Titled) and maybe geek out a little over the role production played in making the album a classic.

They are joined this week by a real life Bill & Ted: Bill and Ted Masuda of the brilliant Toronto band CHAMPION LOVER. They will share with us the pain of spending their formative years with the same name as two cinematic idiots. It’s a good time, you don’t want to miss out.

  • Episode 29 – Robowar & Aerosmith

Episode 29 finds us in Portugal for the 1989 release of Italian masterpiece/Predator rip-off Robowar. Find out if the film’s “star” Reb Brown does one of his patented screams-while-shooting-an-assault-rifle (spoiler: he sure does). This movie is not to be missed.

Then we try to pump some life into Aerosmith‘s 1989 effort Pump by talking about how generic and terrible it is and how much Casey loves it.

Our guest this week is Modern Superior‘s own Bruce Douglas (of Lonely Nights with Bruce Douglas). Bruce has a breadth of knowledge about terrible movies and he uses it to help us make sense of this senseless Robowar.

  • Episode 28 – Hellgate & Maestro Fresh Wes

The dudes at Time Bandits are going back in time alone this week, as a scheduling conflict has left them to check out the 1989 piece of horror-filmmaking garbage Hellgate all by their lonesome selves. This movie is up there with Troll II, Deadly Prey, and more in terms of how bad it is – so you want to hear this one.

Then, they let their backbone slide and check out Maestro Fresh Wes’ smash album Symphony in Effect. Does this Canadian classic hold up, or does it just sound like watered down maple syrup? Find out on Episode 28!

  • Episode 27 – Lethal Weapon 2 & Richard Marx’s Repeat Offender

Time Bandits continues to trek through the year 1989, celebrating the 25th anniversary of both a film and album. This week, we set our sights on the blockbuster action sequel Lethal Weapon 2 – one of the most successful movies of the year. Then, we go from bluesy guitar and saxophone to… neutered rock guitar, ballad bombast and saxophones with Richard Marx‘s slow-dance ready album Repeat Offender.

This week, it’s a meeting of the podcast minds as our good friend Matt Brown joins us on our trip around the sun. If you don’t already know, Matt is the co-host of Toronto’s own Mamo! podcast, writer of the always on-the-nose column Destroy All Monsters! and blogger extraordinaire via Tederick. Plus, you can also follow him on Twitter!
