Odds and Ends: One of us is better at keeping their old video games nice than the other, who believes in the karmic justice of lending things to friends and never getting them back; Nick watched The Santa Claus, and a Bob’s Burgers Christmas special… because it’s still definitely the Christmas season; he also saw Klaus, but T.J. does most of the talking about that one.

Feature Film: Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing, a documentary that is at times frustrating, hilarious, and horrifying, but is at all times insane. The anti “Emperor’s Naked Army,” it follows a few perpetrators of the mass executions that occurred in Indonesia some decades ago. Some are remorseful, some are definitely not, and one is straight spitting. Still a huge piece of shit… but he ain’t wrong. Not about the killing. It’s something else.. Just listen to the episode.

Odds and Ends: The newest Sight and Sound poll results just dropped, and we dive into the various controversies surrounding it, because people can’t just like the movies they wanna like; T.J. talks about the recent Netflix show 1899, but it’s really just an excuse to talk about an older show he likes a lot more; Nick talks about The White Lotus again, or maybe for the first time (definitely not, though); he also saw It’s a Wonderful Life for the first time, and we think it’s about as much of a Christmas movie as our feature film this episode… speaking of “feature film”...  

Feature Film: We talk about the certified hood classic “The Night of the Hunter,” the sole directorial effort by renowned actor Charles Laughton. An ahead of its time flick that features some really great performances, crazy good cinematography and visuals, and knife boners! Rachel Cooper an OG, but we’d feed Icey Spoon to the Reverend in a heartbeat.

Odds and Ends: It’s a cozy Christmas special with your hosts, as we chat about some good ol’ midwestern customs and tropes, T.J. offers up a few stocking stuffers, and Nick and T.J. both talk about some nice comfort shows they've been enjoying. It's a very chill hang this week, folks.  

Feature Film: We discuss the Muppet Christmas Carol, the end all be all Christmas Carol story (yeah, including the original), Christmas movies period, and maybe also Muppet movies? Even if you’ve heard the story a million times, dropping these special little guys in there makes it so much better. It’s a good movie that makes Duds history in this episode. Basically, if you don’t like this movie, you’re a bad person, or you’re lying, or both.

Feature Film: We talk about The Hunt, from Thomas Vinterberg, and Nick has got beef with T.J. for making him watch this agonizingly uncomfortable movie. Pretty apt description! We talk about hunting, even though that’s not literally what this movie is about. It’s a foreign film, so the title is like, a metaphor. So you know it’s fancy.

Feature Film: We take a look at the zany sci-fi cult classic The Fifth Element, directed by the uhm… questionable Luc Besson. It’s a 90s space adventure, so it’s probably exactly what you think. But Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker are in it and bring their own particular charms, so what’s not to like? Well… still a lot, but at least they’re there.

Feature Film: Courtesy of Jeremiah, we watched M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, an infamous adaptation of the beloved animated show of (mostly) the same name. A bizarre piece of cinema that loses everything that made the source material so special, and also doesn’t even bother to pronounce character’s NAMES CORRECTLY. Did you guys even watch the show?

Odds and Ends: Look, I know we talk over each other a lot normally, but this time it wasn’t our fault; we talk stealth games and how they’re, well, not for us, exactly; Nick read the newest installment of one of his favorite book series and gives a horror classic a rewatch; T.J. saw a few new horror flicks and finished the Hellraiser franchise; can you tell that we recorded this in October?  

Feature Film: We take a look at The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, based on the autobiographical book of the same name by Jean-Dominique Bauby. It follows Jean-Do (obviously), who gets locked-in syndrome and has to learn to live with it, eventually writing a book about it (obviously). More uplifting than you’d think, we promise!
