Here's another Blast from the Past episode of TCMMY:
Time is the one thing you can’t earn back, refund, or refinance and that’s why we’re putting it under a microscope today. We hear people say they want “more time” for family, rest, travel, and unfinished goals, but we press the real question: would more hours actually fix the problem, or would we just mismanage a bigger pile of time the same way?Â
We dig into the tension Charles Hummel names in The Tyranny of the Urgent and how constant “right now” pressure crowds out what matters most. From there we break down Parkinson’s Law, why work expands to fill whatever time you give it, and how clear expectations and boundaries can shrink the chaos. Then we walk through Stephen Covey’s time management matrix, sorting life into four quadrants: necessity, opportunity, deception, and waste, with real-world examples like social media arguments, emotional interruptions, and the tasks that quietly build your future.Â
We also talk about responsibility: the more you have, the more you must manage, and that includes your calendar. A key takeaway is learning to budget your time like money by tracking where your hours go before you promise yourself a brand-new plan. We wrap with our new listener Q and A segment and rapid-fire answers that range from serious to light.Â
If this helped you rethink your schedule, subscribe, share the episode with someone who feels stretched thin, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s one thing you’re going to stop giving your time to this week?
Our team will choose random (but timely) episodes from our previous three seasons (which are our most popular ever!) to share with our listeners during the slower parts of a long podcast season. We think you will enjoy them! Thanks for listening!

What happens when artificial intelligence changes the world faster than humanity can adapt?
In this episode of They Call Me Mista Yu, I sit down with Guy Morris, an extraordinary business leader, AI pioneer, musician, composer, entrepreneur, and award-winning thriller author.
Guy's life story is remarkable in its own right.
After escaping an abusive childhood at age 13, he became a homeless runaway and worked alongside migrant workers before earning three degrees by age 25.
His career eventually took him into some of the world's most influential technology and energy organizations, including IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, and Occidental Petroleum, where he worked in strategy, operations, capital planning, mergers and acquisitions, and the early adoption of AI expert systems.
He's led startups, built high-performance teams, pioneered technology, traveled the world, composed music, sailed across oceans, and written deeply researched thrillers exploring technology, science, economics, history, religion, corruption, and power.
Now Guy has turned his attention directly toward one of the biggest questions facing humanity:
What happens next?
His nonfiction book, The AI Tsunami: A Survival Guide for Humanity, explores the coming wave of artificial intelligence and what individuals and small businesses can do to survive—and potentially thrive—in the middle of it.
In this conversation, we explore:
This isn't simply a conversation about technology.
It's a conversation about humanity.
Because the most important question may not be:
"What will AI become?"
It may be:
"What will we become because of it?"

Getting falsely accused is bad enough. Getting judged before you even speak can feel worse, because it turns you into a story other people write for you. We start with that raw question and sit with the emotions most of us try to hide: anger, fear, the urge to fight, the urge to run, and the temptation to give up on people altogether. Then we flip the mirror back on ourselves, because the way we respond to accusation and prejudgment reveals what we really believe about trust, character, and control.
From there, we talk relationship building the way it actually works in real life: closeness creates access, and trust is risky. If you want friendship, marriage, family, or business partnership that lasts, you have to be willing to connect while knowing you could be hurt. That’s why we dig into what “strong materials” look like, and why one-sided effort and shallow commitment make relationships feel like a building made with substandard parts.
The spiritual and personal development core lands in Luke 18:9–14, contrasting the Pharisee’s self-congratulatory prayer with the tax collector’s humility. It’s a gut-check on pride, assumptions, and the quiet ways we elevate ourselves over others. We close with a practical challenge for productivity and accountability: stop framing “Busy” for everything. If we’re honest, a lot of what we call busyness is poor planning, disorganization, avoidance, or excuses.
If this hits home, subscribe for more weekly mirror checks, share it with someone who needs a reset, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s one assumption or excuse you’re ready to drop today?

What if you're not too old, too late, or too unconventional to build something remarkable?
In this episode of They Call Me Mista Yu, I sit down with Carol Tice, a longtime journalist, book ghostwriter, online-business pioneer, and entrepreneur who has spent more than a decade proving that there isn't only one way to build a successful business.
After struggling to make a living as a writing coach and blogger, Carol founded the Freelance Writers Den in 2011.
What started as a paid community eventually grew to more than 1,500 paying members and generated nearly $6 million over the life of the business. It replaced her husband's income, supported their family for more than a decade, and ultimately became a business she was able to sell for life-changing money.
But Carol's entrepreneurial story didn't end with the sale.
At 65, she started again.
Her new venture, The 90 Day Community Relaunch, teaches coaches, consultants, and experts how to build profitable paid communities that can create recurring revenue, meaningful impact, and potentially a more valuable business asset.
In this conversation, we explore:
Carol's story isn't simply about making money online.
It's about refusing to let conventional wisdom determine what your business—or your life—is supposed to look like.
And perhaps the biggest lesson is this:
You're not finished just because you've already succeeded. And you're not too late because you haven't started yet.

He sold his house, quit his job, and moved onto a sailboat and then he stayed. We sit down with author and podcast host Paul Trammell to unpack what “liveaboard sailing” actually looks like when it’s not a vacation, but your real life: mornings on the water, steady work, and the constant choice to keep things simple so the freedom remains possible. If you’ve ever searched “how to live on a sailboat,” “digital nomad sailing,” or “move abroad and start over,” this conversation puts real details behind the dream.
We talk about why Panama, especially the Bocas del Toro area, turned into a long-term home base: no hurricanes, better surf than Florida, great spearfishing, warm weather, and the underrated necessities like getting mail, ordering boat parts, and staying connected with Starlink. Paul describes the pull of nature and community, from jungle and mountains to dolphins and island life, and why stability can still exist inside a nomadic lifestyle.
The heart of the story is identity and sobriety. Paul shares how quitting drinking and weed forced him to redesign his life, let go of old friendships, and build a new identity as a sailor and writer. We also get into the practical side: how he learned to sail, what boat life demands from you, how money changes the equation, and what his storm plan is when your home has an anchor instead of an address.
If this sparks something in you, subscribe, share this with a friend who craves a reset, and leave a review with the biggest question you have about starting over.

Comfort feels like relief, but it quietly taxes your purpose. We open up about how “fine” becomes a fog that steals initiative, connection, and conviction—and why choosing pressure on purpose is the only reliable path to growth. Drawing from the raw courage of Moses climbing Sinai and David running toward Goliath, we explore what it takes to say yes to a mountain you’ve never climbed and how ordinary skills, sharpened in obscurity, can unlock extraordinary outcomes when the stakes are real.
We dig into the everyday signals that your edge is fading: shrinking goals, soft excuses, and a slide into isolation that masquerades as rest. From there, we map a practical way back. You’ll learn why deliberate difficulty reveals character, how community and faith counter the numbing pull of comfort, and what it looks like to turn potential into purpose with one small, brave step. Expect clear reflection prompts—career risks you’re postponing, hard talks you’re dodging, a calling you keep delaying—and a challenge to trade safety for strength.
If you’re ready to feel alive again, this conversation gives you language and leverage to start the climb. We share simple, durable habits to resist drift, build your everyday edge, and reconnect with what matters most: weekly check-ins, honest circles that ask better questions, and commitments that carry weight. Subscribe for more purpose-driven episodes, share this with someone who’s stuck on the couch of “fine,” and leave a review with the mountain you’re choosing to face next.

A 72-year-old with an artificial knee takes on the Appalachian Trail, averages tens of thousands of steps a day, and somehow finds more peace than pain. That’s the heart of our conversation with Rand Timmerman, a retired attorney, Vietnam Marine Corps veteran, and the author of A Spiritual Passage. His journey starts early, with the first drink at 13 and the quiet certainty that alcohol could one day take too much. Years later, recovery becomes real through the 12 steps, daily meetings, and the decision to lean on a higher power instead of trying to out-tough everything alone.
From there, the story opens into endurance and brotherhood: a 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail hike across 14 states, tackled in their 70s, driven by discipline, grit, and a promise not to leave family behind. Rand breaks down what it actually feels like to climb and descend day after day, to fall and still get up, to run out of gas and then return, and to meet the strange, supportive trail community along the way. Yes, we talk bears and the realities of the wild, but the bigger point is what long-distance hiking teaches about resilience, mental health, and staying sober when life gets uncomfortable.
The deepest thread is grief. Rand shares why this trek mattered so much to his brother after losing his wife, and how nature can become a form of therapy when you need space to mourn, remember, and finally move forward. If you’re searching for hope around addiction recovery, grief healing, Appalachian Trail inspiration, or spiritual growth after trauma, this conversation delivers practical perspective and a simple method that works: one step at a time. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review with the one hard thing you’re walking through right now.

So you're not invited to the cool kids parties? Good!
Ever felt like you’re doing the right work but no one sees you? We lean into that tension and reframe invisibility as a strategic season where depth, character, and endurance are forged. Drawing on the stories of David guarding sheep before a crown, Elijah refined by a quiet brook, and Joseph serving faithfully in a prison, we unpack why obscurity often precedes real promotion—and how to lead well when the room is silent.
We talk about the hidden season as a planting, not a burial. Like a seed pushing roots in the dark, leaders build strength below the surface long before fruit shows up. That shift—from chasing applause to stewarding vision—changes everything. You’ll hear practical ways to keep tending your “sheep,” detach from the need for cool circles, and turn consistency into credibility. We challenge the myth that recognition equals impact and offer a healthier metric: faithfulness over time.
You’ll also get a simple framework to navigate timing. You can’t force fruit before your roots can hold it, and you won’t be able to stop it when due time arrives. We walk through daily habits for resilience, boundaries that protect energy, and a mindset that keeps you serving people instead of performing for them. If you’re tired, tempted to quit, or hungry for clarity, this conversation will help you stay grounded, work heartily, and trust the process that prepares you for sustainable influence.
If this moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s growing in the dark, and leave a quick review so more leaders can find it. Your story might be the nudge someone needs today.

Madagascar isn’t a movie reference or a single flavor note in your baking drawer, and Emmanuel LaRoche makes that impossible to forget. We sit down with the author of A Taste of Madagascar: Culinary Riches of the Red Island and longtime host of the Flavors Unknown Podcast to trace how a “simple” ingredient can carry an entire economy, a community’s future, and a lesson in humility.
We start with the reality of food work, the strong personalities that kitchens often require, and why the people side of restaurants can be harder than the recipes, especially after COVID changed staffing and expectations. From there, Emmanuel takes us to Madagascar itself: an enormous island off Africa’s east coast with wildly diverse landscapes and a food story most Americans never hear. Yes, Madagascar vanilla matters, but so do the island’s cocoa, caviar, endemic black pepper, and unique honeys that quietly end up on chef’s tables around the world.
We go behind the scenes of Madagascar and learn about the process about how the food is processing and the economical impact on the people of the island that most Americans know nothing about, all the while enjoying the benefits.
The most moving moments come from the human connections behind the supply chain: chefs building opportunity for young people in the capital, a friend who takes time off to guide Emmanuel to farmers and entrepreneurs, and a beekeeper whose shift away from charcoal production becomes a real-world example of sustainable food, reforestation, and dignity through work. We wrap on a challenge that sticks: if you understood how many hands touch a vanilla bean before it reaches your kitchen, would you ever treat it the same way again?
Subscribe for more conversations like this, share the episode with a fellow food lover, and leave a review. What ingredient do you think you’ve been taking for granted?
