In the summer of 2007, Luna's cousin Delia bought a farmhouse at auction on Pringle Creek Road, a gravel stretch outside the town of Osage, Iowa. The house had been empty for twenty years, but the realtor said it was 'clean' — which is what they say when they don't want you to look inside the attic. Delia asked Luna to help clean the place out before she moved in. They found a Mason jar in the crawlspace under the eaves. Inside were teeth. Not animal teeth — human molars, canines, incisors, with roots still attached. Some had cavities. Some had fragments of gold filling. The jar was sealed, but the lid was loose, and when Luna turned it in the flashlight beam, she saw something that made her set it down very carefully. Delia didn't sleep in that house. Neither did Luna.

In the summer of 2009, a nursing student named Delia took a night shift at the abandoned Cedar Crest Sanatorium outside Salem, New Hampshire. She was cataloguing old medical records for a history thesis. But in a sealed attic room, she found a harp — still strung, still standing — and the song it played when she touched it was not music. It was a memory, a name, a date, a death. This is the story Delia told me on her porch in Durham, two weeks before she stopped speaking entirely. It's about what the harp remembered, and what it made her remember in return. It's about the room that was never on any floor plan, and the song that has no end.

Luna tells the story of a pine box she found in her grandmother's attic, wrapped in oilcloth and tied with red string. Inside were objects belonging to a woman named Eliza who vanished from a small Oregon town in 1987. As Luna traces the box's history through a handwritten ledger and a single cassette tape, she uncovers a pattern of promises made and then broken. The final object in the box is a key that might unlock a door that should never have been sealed. A story about debts we inherit and the silence we carry forward.

In the summer of 2005, a teenager named Elise moved into a renovated farmhouse outside Millbrook, Iowa. The previous owners had sealed a cistern in the basement with concrete, but Elise found a loose board behind the water heater. What she heard when she pressed her ear to the gap — a wet, rhythmic sound, like something breathing through liquid — pulled her back every night for three weeks. She never told her parents. She never called anyone. By the end of August, she stopped using the upstairs bathroom altogether. This is what she wrote in a journal she left behind, and what I found when I bought the house at auction last fall.

In the summer of 2017, Luna helps her aunt clear out an old farmhouse outside of a small town called Bitter Creek, Oregon. In the attic, she finds a handcrafted Victorian dollhouse—exact in every detail down to the wallpaper, the tiny furniture, and a single light left burning in the nursery. As she examines it, she realizes the dollhouse is not a replica. It is a record. Every scratch on the tiny floorboards matches a real wound. And the family frozen in miniature—father, mother, three children—are not posed. They are trapped. Luna pieces together the story of the woman who built it, a recluse named Elara Voss, who disappeared in 1982. The final room she finds is the one that shouldn't exist—a room added after the real house was demolished. Inside, a single doll, face-down on a bed. And it is still warm. Unsettling, atmospheric, and deeply quiet, this episode lingers on the boundary between preservation and imprisonment.

In the summer of 2003, a highway rest stop off Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon had a full-length mirror in the women's restroom that didn't quite show what it should. I stopped there on a drive from Boise to Portland, just after midnight. The woman in the mirror wasn't me — not exactly. She wore the same clothes, had the same hair, but her expression was wrong, like she'd been crying for hours and had just run out. I tried to look away, but my reflection didn't look away with me. This is the story of what happens when you see yourself the way you'd look if you'd already given up.

In October of 2003, Luna stopped at a defunct gas station outside Wichita Falls to buy a bell jar from a man who kept it on a high shelf in the back room. The jar was filled with a fine grey dust that looked like ash but smelled like wet copper and old bone. The man told her it was just talcum powder from his grandmother's dresser. Luna brought the jar home. That night, she set it on her nightstand and turned off the lamp. She lay in the dark listening to the wind push against the window. And then she heard something shift inside the jar — a dry whisper, like a hand placed on a sheet of sandpaper. She tells the story of what happened next, and what she saw when she finally unscrewed the lid.

In the autumn of 1998, Luna's aunt bought a vintage dress form from a closed-down department store in Clarion, Ohio, and stored it in the attic. Years later, helping clear the house, Luna found the mannequin again—but it had changed. The pose was wrong, the surface was warm, and behind its glass eyes something was watching. This is the story of a thing that should have been empty, and the mistake of bringing it indoors. Luna recounts the long night she spent alone in the attic with the mannequin, the sounds it made when the house was quiet, and what she saw in the dormer window just before dawn. No one else remembers the mannequin now. But Luna still has the photograph she took that night—and she never looks at it after sunset.

In the autumn of 2018, Luna met a woman in the hills above Lost Creek, Oregon — a retired cartographer who claimed she could map places that did not exist yet. Her name was Margo Strayer, and her living room was papered in hand-drawn maps of towns that had no post office, no census record, no satellite image. Luna went to interview her for a rural folklore project. She stayed because Margo showed her a map of a town called Vesterly, and the ink was still wet. This is a story about the boundary between making something and finding it, about the way a person can draw themselves into a place that does not want them. It is also about the smell of wet cedar and the sound of a pencil eraser rubbing against paper at two in the morning, and what happens when the place you invent decides to answer back.

In the late autumn of 2018, Luna drove out past the county line to look at an antique kerosene lamp listed in a classified ad. The seller lived at the end of Miracle Road, a dead-end gravel lane in the hills above a town called Prosper. The lamp was beautiful—brass, etched glass, still oily inside. But the woman who sold it wouldn't look Luna in the eye, and she asked a strange question before handing it over: 'You're not planning to light it, are you?' Luna didn't light it that night. But she did something worse. She turned the wick just enough to see what the old paraffin had preserved. This episode is a quiet, slow-burn horror about things that stay lit long after the fuel should be gone. It's about the smell of burnt kerosene, a woman's voice on the radio that makes no sound, and a road that doesn't appear on any map. Luna tells it the way you'd tell a story you're still afraid to finish.
