Welcome to the ThinkBamboo Podcast. In this episode, we have a very special guest, Susanne Lucas, the World Bamboo Director, from the WB-Organization and WB-Foundation. We met in real life, for first time at the past European Bamboo Expo 2023 in Dortmund Germany and agreed there to schedule this first ThinkBamboo Podcast.

Susanne Lucas, one of the founders of the World Bamboo Organization, helped formalize the organization in 2004. In 2021, they established the World Bamboo Foundation to provide grants to individuals working with timber bamboo for construction. Susanne’s passion for bamboo and her dedication to its potential for sustainable construction is evident in her work.

In this episode, JJ sits down in this latest remote interview, with Thomas Quirynen, the founder of Bamboo-Uganda, to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the bamboo industry in Uganda.

Bamboo-Uganda is a social business focused on pushing the bamboo value chain in Uganda. The organization was founded two years ago by a group of bamboo enthusiasts looking to fill a gap in the bamboo processing industry in Uganda. The main challenge was the lack of access to bamboo, which they solved by identifying existing plantations and starting a small processing facility to experiment with making quality products.

In this episode, we explore how Bamboo-Uganda is working to enable the value chain in the bamboo industry in Uganda, setting up a carbon credit component, and exploring an agroforestry model. We also discuss the challenges of maximizing the environmental and social impact through the agroforestry model, and the research being done on producing structural bamboo with green glues and heat treatment.

In this 5th ThinkBamboo Podcast, Oscar Pont, a French architect (Web / IG) and carpenter living in Brazil, shares his journey of discovering bamboo as a sustainable material and his efforts to grow and experiment with bamboo on his land in Brazil. Oscar explains that his architecture background was rooted in traditional European building materials such as concrete, steel, and stone. Interestingly it wasn’t until he began traveling in Asia that he saw the potential of bamboo as a building material.

Upon returning to Brazil, Oscar set out to find clients who were willing to experiment with bamboo as a building material. However, he soon discovered that it was difficult to find a supplier of bamboo in Brazil, as the only type of bamboo available was the bamboo variety used for cellulose production.

About Our Guest – Dr. Hans Friederich

He is a global ambassador for the World Bamboo Organization, and a partner and senior advisor of BambooLogic in the Netherlands. Dr. Friederich has served as the Head of the Secretariat of the INBAR and has worked in several countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya, and Botswana. Hans is also a member of the Expert Panel of the Life Terra Foundation, which manages a large European tree planting program. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the ArtEZ University of the Arts research project “Bamboo Europe”. When he left INBAR in 2019 he was asked if interested to join BambooLogic, a Dutch company that saw his potential and asked him to help start a European bamboo program. With his knowledge and expertise, he was the perfect fit for the job. Today Hans will share with us his vision of the future of bamboo in Europe and how we can develop the industry for this sustainable resource.

The Billion Dollar Bamboo Industry in China

During his time at INBAR, he realized that most of the bamboo produced in Asia, especially China, is sold internationally in Europe and the United States. Even though bamboo is not a native plant in Europe, there is a great demand for bamboo products there, which makes it an attractive market.

In the world of bamboo, China dominates both the domestic and international markets. According to Hans Friederich, the former director-general of the INBAR, the internal industry for bamboo in China was valued at a staggering 60 billion US Dollars, and that was five years ago! It’s likely even higher today. But it’s not just within China’s borders that bamboo is in high demand. The international trade in bamboo is also significant, and the majority of it comes from Asia, with China leading the way. It’s clear that when it comes to bamboo, China is a force to be reckoned with.
