  • Ep. 39 The Weekly: Self-Worth in a Digital Age

In this installment of the Weekly, Ryan diagnoses the pitfalls of defining success by and basing self-worth on contemporary standards, providing practical recommendations and giving encouragement to those who may be struggling with insecurity and a lack of self esteem in a digital age.

"Many young people live in a world where self-esteem and self-worth are predicated upon social media affirmation. My value is based on how many followers my accounts have, how many likes and shares my posts get, and whether I’ve gone viral or not. Our understanding of success is also rooted in these things: success is defined by popularity, influence, reach, status. In this contemporary situation, one could argue that we are building our self-esteem and self-worth on a very precarious, rickety, unstable, and volatile foundation—like a person who builds her house on the sand."

    • Ep. 38 The Weekly: People of Faith

On this week's episode, Ryan explains why all people—regardless of whether one is religious or not—are people of faith.

"We tend to have a very limited and narrow understanding of the concept of faith. In a reductionistic way, we typically only apply this category to those who are religious. Faith only applies to the religious person; only the religious person has faith. We hold so many assumptions that are misguided, ideas that we blindly accept and never question—presuppositions and presumptions that we, ironically, accept by faith!"

      • Ep. 37 The Weekly: Faith or Reason

In this week's episode, Ryan discusses the relationship between faith and reason, explaining why he personally doesn't see them as enemies, but as friends.

"Though I don’t believe that faith and reason are mutually exclusive and intrinsically opposed to one another, I do believe that faith can be detached from reason. Faith can be blind or it can be supported by reason. Blind faith is the culprit here, but blind faith is not unique to religion. It can be found in the general ideological, social, and political spheres as well. To think that only religious people are capable of detaching faith from reason and therefore capable of blind faith is a bit naïve and maybe even a bit arrogant."

        • Ep. 36 The Weekly: Christianity & Conspiracies

On this week's episode, Ryan delves into the relationship between Christianity and conspiracy theories and religion and delusional thinking. Although Ryan does not believe that there is a necessary connection between faith and delusion, he does think that there are some reasons why religious people have a tendency to accept conspiracy theories.

"I believe in the classical and ecumenical truths of Christianity. I believe that these truths are good, that Christianity is truly good news. But these kinds of delusional and fanatical attitudes, behaviors, and mindsets make it more difficult to see, to recognize, the good news of the faith passed down."

          • Ep. 35 The Weekly: Just Thinking

On today's installment of The Weekly, Ryan discusses the topic of justice. But instead of focusing on issues of activism and social justice, Ryan centers his attention on justice in thought and speech, which he believes is every bit as important as social justice.

"To think justly and communicate justly, to embody these values, is to participate with the Spirit of God in the world, the same Spirit that worked in and through James Meredith, a man who always understood himself as being on a mission from a just God to enact justice in the world. Thinking justly and communicating justly are every bit as important as social justice; for all of these forms of justice reflect and embody the truthfulness and fairness of a just God."

On this week's episode, Ryan delves into the topic of finding common ground and highlights the importance of volunteering and public service.

"How do we find common ground in such a radically diverse society? Why should we care about common ground? What positive consequences stem from finding common ground and what negative consequences follow from ignoring it?"

              • Ep. 33 The Weekly: The Common Good

Why is self-interest harmful to democracies? Why is the pursuit of the common good such an integral part of healthy democratic societies? Is it even possible today to talk about a “common good”? And how does all of this relate to our contemporary American context? These are the tough questions that we will be tackling on this week's episode!

"I truly wonder, much to the chagrin of the original developers and classical proponents of the notion of democracy, if we are witnessing the contemporary diminishing of the common good—the good of the collective, the cooperate body, the team, so to speak. I wonder if we can even rightly talk about a common good today. Does such a thing even exist anymore?"

                • Ep. 32 The Weekly: Division & Unity

Why do we have such a strong tendency to focus on what divides us instead of on what unites us? How do we overcome such a negative tendency? How should we approach difference? And how do we foster unity? These are the tough questions that we will be tackling on this week's episode!

"The issue lies not so much in the differences themselves nor in the mere recognition of the differences, but in our attitudes towards the differences—in how we choose to approach them."

                  • Ep. 31 The Weekly: Preaching & Practicing

In this installment of The Weekly, Ryan discusses the importance of practicing what we preach, detailing many benefits on both a personal and social level.

"When I express a value for an ideal or stand up for a cause through some form or medium of communication but don’t live into the ideal or take action for the cause, I am preaching without practicing. This is also a working definition for 'virtue signaling'—signaling virtue through images, symbolism, and language without enacting and embodying the virtue that is being communicated, signaling virtue without being virtuous! Virtue signaling is expression that lacks being; communication that lacks animation and dynamism; mere appearances without inward character and outward action."
