  • Ep. 20 The Simpleminded Society: Fact vs. Opinion

In the third installment of our season entitled, "The Simpleminded Society," Ryan deconstructs human objectivity, displaying the negative consequences that flow from it, and reconstructs a working understanding of human subjectivity, demonstrating its many advantages.

"All human knowledge is a synthesis of subject & object. No one gets to the object in an unmediated manner; no one retrieves the object as it truly is in itself. There are no detached observers (which is what a lot of people believe that scientists are). Knowledge is relational, involving a relationship between subject and object, whereby the subject contributes to the knowledge of the object through natural self-projection. Only God, if such a being exists, knows objectively, a being who sees all things as they are—past, present, and future—simultaneously and in eternity, outside of the subjective conditions of space-time."

    • Ep. 19 The Simpleminded Society: The Via Media

In the second episode of our new season, Ryan offers a critique of black and white, polarized thinking; argues that centrists and moderates are becoming more rare and more disliked in our society; and calls for mediation, bridge-building, and peacemaking.

"Thinker Sensitive is a podcast with many values. One of our central values is mediation, and this podcast will continually try to model true mediating thinking. Because our society is becoming more and more divided, polarized, radicalized, and militant, mediating thinkers—or bridge builders—are becoming more and more rare. I think we might actually be getting to the point where dialectical thinkers become disliked, shunned, and looked down upon. I think it’s already happening to a certain extent, as I have personally experienced it in various settings."

      • Ep. 18 The Simpleminded Society: Simplemindedness

In the first episode of our season entitled, "The Simpleminded Society," we argue that the question of truth should be elevated above the question of offense; we define simplemindedness; we provide several examples of it in contemporary society; we detail the way of the true philosopher; and we provide practical tips on how to overcome simplemindedness.

"One important lesson that I have learned, whether through success or failure, is that sometimes the truth, or at least what we subjectively perceive to be the truth, is inherently offensive, and there’s no way around it. You can slave—through blood, sweat, and tears—over how to express the idea in question in the most sensitive way possible; you can express the idea in the most respectful, humble, nuanced, gentile, and amicable manner imaginable—and the idea will still be offensive, at least to some. Some truths, some ideas, are simply inherently offensive."

        • Ep. 17 The Weekly: The Art of Disagreement

In this edition of The Weekly, Ryan provides 7 practical tips for maintaining and developing friendships amidst profound disagreement.

"Dealing with disagreements well really revolves around this classical ethical imperative that we call the 'Golden Rule': treat others the way that you want to be treated; engage with others the way that you would want to be engaged with; disagree with others the way that you would want them to disagree with you. If I strive to follow this maxim, I will most likely avoid poor engagement with alternative views and divergent opinions."

          • Ep. 16 The Weekly: The Rule of Love - The Hope of the World

In the third episode of our new weekly segment, Ryan reads through and comments on an article that he wrote on the limitless and boundless power of love. The original article was entitled, "The Rule of Love: The Hope of the World."

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

            • Ep. 15 The Weekly: The Moral Spirit of the Age

In the second episode of our new weekly segment, Ryan reads through and comments on an article that he wrote on the state of contemporary morality during the turmoil and civil unrest of 2020. The original article was entitled, "The Moral Spirit of the Age."

"Does drinking a milk shake from an eco-friendly straw make me a good person? If I call someone from Spain 'Hispanic' rather than 'Latino,' does this mean that I am an individual of high moral character? Can eating fair trade chocolate singlehandedly validate and certify my moral integrity? If I only purchase goods and services from small businesses that are ethically faultless, does this make me a paragon of righteousness within my society?"

              • Ep. 14 The Weekly: A Prophetic Word From MLK

In the opening episode of our new weekly segment, Ryan reads through and comments on an article that he wrote on Martin Luther King Jr. during the turmoil and civil unrest of 2020. The original article was entitled, "A Prophetic Word From MLK."

"If MLK were alive today, I think he would be greatly troubled by the state of both our thinking and our communication on a wide-scale societal level. MLK was trained by 'dialectical' philosophers and was a dialectical thinker. To put this in more accessible terms, he was a mediating thinker: he tried to find common ground between polarized viewpoints. He believed that truth was complex, not simple. He steered away from overly-simplistic, black and white, either/or thinking—seeking to find a synthesis out of sharp bifurcations. In ethical terms, one could say that King was a peacemaker."
