  • Environmental Whack-A-Mole (Hawaii: State Of Clean Energy)

Carbon Cash-Back for the Win.  The host for this show is Mitch Ewan.  The guest is Matthew Geyer.

In the next legislative session a Carbon Cashback bill will be introduced. We discuss how this legislation would help.

Carbon Cashback imposes a tax on all fossil fuels imported into Hawaii. The policy would increase the barrel tax rate for each fossil fuel at the desired carbon tax rateb thereby eliminating the need for additional bureaucracy.  The government collects these additional barrel tax revenues and returns them to Hawaii residents. Every adult receives the same amount regardless of income, and every minor receives a half share.

The University of Hawaii has conducted two carbon tax studies that analyzed policies essentially equivalent to the carbon cashback policy described above.  These studies found:

    1. A state-level carbon tax set at about $50/metric ton of CO2 would reduce Hawai‘i’s cumulative GHG emissions by 10% over twenty years.

    2. Tax revenues given back to households in equal shares benefits lower-income households more than proportionately.

  • The Joy of Bicycle Riding (Coronavirus and Our Mental Health)

Around the World on Two Wheels.  The host for this show is Ken Burtness.  The guests are Steven Katz and Tamara Moan.

People love automobiles. Traveling from home to work to social events, driving becomes habit. People have time to think about the next step in their busy day along the familiar route, their driving semi-automatic. Little is seen of the surrounding scenery. Little is heard, felt, or smelt of the environment behind the rolled-up windows with the radio on and the air conditioning going. Astride a bicycle, a person is open to the world. They feel the earth beneath their tires, smell the fragrance of the landscape, hear the living orchestra around them. They feel their bodies powering them forward and with every pedal there are new things to see and wonder at. The trip becomes the joy, not the destination.

  • MAGA GOP Defines its Control of the House (American Issues Take One)

Promises to Get AG Garland, Hunter Biden.  The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell.  The guest is Chuck Crumpton.

It didn't take long for the House of Representatives--now under the thin margin of control by the GOP--to roll out their new policy objectives for the future. The only problem: it was very short on policy and more filled with a MAGA GOP wish list to attack US Attorney General Merrick Garland, and a déjà vu moment of a Benghazi-like investigation of Hunter Biden. The AG didn't help himself by appointing a new Special Council to take over the investigations of Trump, his role with the unauthorized storage of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home, and his role in the Jan 6 Capital attack. The panel explores the importance of the GOP's approach to interacting with the Biden Administration.

  • Every Day is Thanksgiving in India (Global Connections)

But Thanksgiving Itself is Not Common.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Roopmati Khandekar.

Roopmati Khandekar, who is from India, helps us understand the extent to which Thanksgiving is celebrated in India. It is not celebrated or recognized as a national holiday in India. But it is observed in the state of Goa under a different name popularly known as 'ladainha' or 'ladin.'  'Ladin' literally mean litany to the Virgin Mary.  During the Thanksgiving ritual, people thank God for all the material and spiritual benefits. Christians start preparing for Thanksgiving celebrations by purchasing wheat and gram, candles, wine and colored paper. A platform/altar is decorated with flowers. Celebrations include singing of litany, hymns and prayers. Several other feasts at various times during the year celebrate the theme of giving thanks, such as Onam, celebrated in South India, and Vaisakhi, celebrated in Punjab and Haryana, and is in some ways similar the a bigger holiday, Diwali.
