The New Orleans Pelicans' 2024-25 season ended before it began. They didn't have a chance due to all their injuries, including a long-term one for Dejounte Murray. To top it all off, they fell three spots in the lottery. They'll be in a position to select one in the draft, but they seem far away from being competitive again. The new front office could look to be aggressive this summer to bolster the roster.

The Philadelphia 76ers lucked out by keeping their pick and seeing it rise to the top 3. They now have the challenge of fielding a competitive team while keeping expenses controlled. They already have a high payroll before re-signing Quentin Grimes and Guerschon Yabusele. They'll need to save money, but it probably won't be from trading Paul George.

The Dallas Mavericks sacrificed their future for a two-year title window when they traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. That window may have already closed with Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL. But now they have a future by lucking out with the top selection in the upcoming draft. When you get a second chance at a generational player, the practical thing to do is trade your veterans now and build around him. But the Mavs seem unlikely to do that. They appear prepared to see things through with this group and worry about their future later.

The San Antonio Spurs jumped in the lottery for a third straight year. They are now loaded with up to six first-round picks to trade, including the second overall selection in the upcoming 2025 draft. They also have several young players of interest, but I think they're going to try to keep them all. De'Aaron Fox nudging his way to San Antonio was just the tip of the iceberg.
