Third Culture Talks episodes

  • S2E2: Weird Culture Kids (ft. Ngoc Nguyen)
This episode features a very special guest, Ngoc Nguyen, the author of her upcoming book "Weird Culture Kids." Growing up Vietnamese but attending a French international school in Hanoi, Ngoc opens the door on the wider umbrella of international kids: internationally mobile, culturally confused, but not fitting into the traditional definition of a Third Culture Kid. We ask her about her story, her book, and whether or not Caye can pronounce her name properly. Tune in to find out.

  • S2E1: Turning Upside Down
For their Season 2 premiere, Caye and Dan catch up! Dan talks about moving to Poland, they compare the pandemic in different countries, what "popular" meant in high school and how it feels to watch the US election from both inside and outside. This was obviously recorded prior to the 2020 election, so it will age extremely well.

  • S1E12: Come Sail Away (ft. Selene Collins)
In this very special episode, we invite our guest Selene Collins to tell us the most unique story we've ever heard: growing up on a boat. She shares her stories of living on a boat as a child for 7 years, watching for pirates, sleeping on an anchor, only occasionally being abandoned on other boats to meet other boat kids. We even hear about her re-entry into the English school system.
You can find her new book "In Support of Black Lives" on Amazon, with easy links through her Instagram @litlangislife or her blog thirdculturethinking.food.blog.

  • S1E11: Traveller's Guide: Don't be a D*ck (ft. Jeremy Fernandez)
In this episode Caye gets to meet a friend of Dan's from his hostel volunteering and backpacking days. Jeremy is a hostel manager in Malaysia and has seen many travellers and volunteers, including Dan, pass through. The gang tell stories, discuss Malaysia as a travel destination, talk about the odd relationship of the business of tourism with the cultural ideal being sold, as well as the odd bubble culture that surrounds long term backpackers and how it's a little similar to the bubble culture of international schools.

  • S1E10: Elle nous écoute (ft. Aicha)

In this episode, our guest is Aicha, born in Germany but grew up moving around multiple countries in Africa. As a cool, fun person we thought she would be perfect to share some general dating stories, and as a final treat to you, dear listener, to test some Third Culture themed bad pick up lines. Hilarity ensues.

  • S1E8: Third Culture Radio
Dan and Caye talk one of Caye's favourite topics: music, especially those they associate with different parts of their heritage and history. They discuss the discovery of different music through different countries they lived in and adjusting to new places and the popular (or not) music of the time and place. Caye talks about Spanish Caltic rock, progressive metal and being a jazz snob, while Dan teaches him about Techtonik and uses lyrics as humourous weapons.

  • S1E7: Calvin in the Middle (ft. Calvin Widjaja)
For this episode, we interview Calvin Widjaja, the host and founder of Global CKtizens, an online show hosting interviews of and for Third Culture Kids. Calvin grew up between Singapore and Indonesia and has thoughts to share on how life sucks but it's what you do about it that uplifts you. We discuss the slippery slope that is nostalgia, especially when you grow up mobile and tie your memories to places, people and media.  He also calls Dan old.
