Tracey-Maree Smith is an Australian artist who thinks she is born an artist as she possesses the quality of being an artist – introvert, empathic, loner, etc.
When she was young, she wanted to become an Art teacher
Started an art business with 2 friends in Newcastle but she ended up burnt out as she just wanted to paint without having to tell clients to change her work, etc.
As a designer, she was very corporate and simple and minimalist, as a painter she wants to make a mess and paint intuitively
She talked about her artist’s journey – from not knowing where/what to do to being a finalist to different prestigious art prizes
Being a designer is part of her story because that is her life
She’s a full-time parent and if she has an exhibition coming up she spends 20-30 hours holding the brush
She also talked about her meditation retreat where she donated a painting to raise money for a good cause

a ’born’ artist, she was the only one who showed artistic aptitude among her siblings
started winning art awards at a young age of 13 or 14
her mum pushed the business side of art and she gets support from both her parents
getting noticed is the issue most artists have
sold her first painting at 17 and had had 46 exhibitions at 39
she always focuses on the business/ marketing side of her art career
‘when we start to lose ego and start nurturing each other, we benefit’
all artists that we support share the same value
we cut out the deadweight and keep it clean and beautiful for the others
along with rejections – she has gained personal growth
we need the downs and the ups – that’s how we find balance
you create your own luck

introverts require to trust
introverts need to recharge their batteries in their own time, own space while extroverts recharge their batteries interacting with people, etc
working with artists that are introverts, I really want them to feel included
we can take a leaf out of their book
if you’re not sharing what you’re doing, you’re going to get left behind
there are fantastic benefits of sharing
introverts need encouragement
