  • FGM Awareness-Raising And Redefining Femininity – Paul D. Lowe & Bridget Kigambo

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Bridget Kigambo to talk about the comparing the circumstances and situations faced by previous generations of Ugandan women, and women around the world, to those faced by the current generation around femininity, with specific reference to FGM (female genital mutilation).

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • In Uganda we have tribes that practice FGM. Mostly it happens in Northern Uganda and it is a cultural way of cutting (or circumcision), because our ancestors and traditional leaders believed you had to be circumcised to get married. In most cases, in a typical family, at 5 years old your mother can send you to your aunt's place where they take you through the initiation of why you should be cut and how it will benefit you as a woman. With the wrong tools that they carry out that activity, sometimes it’s so painful that they have to tie the girls to the table and the cultural leader (who is a female) comes and slices you with either a razor blade or a knife.
    • With the help from civil society organisations and NGOs like Unicef, UNU, NFTA and other international organisations that invest funds to create awareness and train communities about how it is a human rights abuse to circumcise young women, especially children because it deprives them of sexual pleasure and it disfigures the reproductive parts of a woman. If god created you with a full vagina with a clitoris inside and the culture says you need to cut it off, it somehow dismantles the whole reproductive system of a woman and causes several diseases, not forgetting the trauma that comes with the circumcision. Through these programmes and activities, I see organisations creating awareness on how FGM not only deprives women of their divinity or their ability to carry on with their work or lead lives normally, but it’s not a must that every woman who has to get married has to go through FGM.
    • Redefining femininity for me would mean being in a female-friendly community where I can fully exploit my potential, full access to all the basic needs I need as a woman to not only be a woman but also reach out to the spaces where before women were not allowed.
    • Traditionally, African families were expected to invest more in their boys, no matter how many girls you had, because they believed that when the kids are old enough for marriage the women take all the glory, wealth and knowledge that they receive to the next family – they don’t belong to the families they are born into. But currently, I would say most families are more invested in supporting all girls in a way that they should go to school the same as the boys.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘My family doesn’t believe in FGM, but from the stories that we hear FGM somehow contributes to your divinity as a woman because if you’re not circumcised, or cut, you most definitely won’t get married or get a husband.’

‘With the kind of awareness and knowledge sharing that we are  having, we’re noticing reduced cases especially in the North. It’s better now and we’re getting there to a point where FGM will not be there anymore.’

‘We have women MPs as well as men MPs, even in religious structures that used to be so rigid that they wouldn’t allow religious leaders to be women, we’re starting to see some institutions providing platforms and opportunities for women to lead, which is a great way for us to redefine femininity.’

‘We are working towards enabling young women and girls to not only identify their skills and potentials, but also manage them to see what they can do towards creating gender inclusion and equality in our communities.’

  • Being Immersed In The Present Moment (1) – Paul D. Lowe & Rebecca Wheele

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest Rebecca Wheele to have another of their unplanned, free-wheeling conversations that could go anywhere, but forces them to be in the moment.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I notice my mind sometimes can’t help but wander: “I’ve got this to do”, “I need to email this person back”, “What am I going to do about this problem tomorrow”, and I feel that a lot of time we miss the real possibility for a deeper connection in that moment because the mind likes to wander. If we’re not aware of it, it distracts us from being in that moment. I’m trying to practice being immersed in that moment.
    • There’s so much depth to us as humans. If it was an iceberg, we’d be presenting the tip of the iceberg to the majority of people, but there’s so much going on beneath the surface. By suppressing that down and not expressing them – journaling is a fantastic way to express – I believe that suppressed energy creates toxicity somehow in the body. It’s important to have people that can hold space for you without judgement to talk to about things.
    • We’ve got the conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the unconscious mind. A lot of the patterns that play out in our lives that we’re unconscious of, other people around us that we’ve got that dynamic with can often see that much more clearly than we can. It’s called the shadow for a reason because we’re in the dark. By having that mirror, or someone planting seeds, or even tough love, it’s really needed for you to become conscious of what you’re doing. Our awareness expands from that. And it’s an ever evolving process.
    • Finding an outlet is really key in being able to express. I feel a lot of the time, in society, there’s a pressure for there to be a reason to do something: We need things to achieve, to have success, to grow, to be fast, to be better. There’s actually a beautiful opportunity in doing something just to do it, to express, to experience, to feel, to just be in the moment.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Expression is something I’ve been really thinking about recently, it’s such an important thing because it’s releasing energy.’

‘From a young age I’d express myself through painting, drawing, collage, and all forms of art. More recently I’ve been expressing through dance and I’ve found that so powerful. There’s something in dance where, to be in the moment, you release all self-consciousness.’

‘When you’re at the top of a diving board, thinking about the cold water, if you zoom out from it and actually know how you’re going to feel once you’ve dived, the release of everything that goes along with that, there’s a feeling of achievement and growth and you can see the benefit of doing it.’

  • 5 Tips To Living A Purpose-Driven Life – Paul D. Lowe & Denyse Mugabekazi

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Denyse Mugabekazi to give an African perspective to the phrase living a purpose-driven life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Living a purpose driven life for me means that a person should discover their  mission on this Earth, what they are born to accomplish, why they have been created and after this they should align their life with their mission
    • I had a dream, but I didn’t know how to accomplish it. I didn’t know how to start it. I didn’t know even if it was the right dream until one day I got up and decided to overcome my fear. I went through different phases and there are 5 tips which helped me to overcome my fear, discover my purpose and start living happily: 1) Have a healthy relationship with you 2) Know you talent and find your passion 3) Work on self-improvement 4) Set a goal and have a mission 5) Give help or support others in need.
    • Don’t set strict deadlines when you want to achieve something, when you set strict deadlines you are making your life hard, you aren’t being fair with yourself. But, challenge yourself to achieve something bigger than you think you can achieve. Life is unpredictable and you shouldn’t limit yourself and stress yourself with deadlines because life can change quickly, you have to learn to cope with it and be patient in life, let life flow and move at its own pace. It’s never too late to achieve your goals, the key is to always have something that moves you ahead, your goal is your guide and you will have to work hard every day to achieve it, stay organised and having a goal will help you accomplish your goal in life.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘A person should get up every day thinking: “What am I going to do today and is my work from today going to accomplish my mission on this world?”’
‘We all have a voice inside ourselves that guides our decisions, you should listen to your inner voice and see what it tells you. Don’t let others influence your life, make positive decisions for yourself.’
‘If you compare yourself with others you will end up feeling like you are not loved. You need to love yourself first and then appreciate what you have.’
‘Try to discover your passion by listening to your heart.’

  • Inspiring Insights Into Africa – Paul D. Lowe & Collins Mureithi

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest Collins Mureithi to talk about inspiring stories from Africa, as Collins has been privileged to interact with people who are creating amazing impact in their communities throughout the continent as well as his home country of Kenya.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • One of the things that really encourages and inspires me every day is when I meet people who are doing good in the community, who are trying their best to leave a legacy whereby others will be able to smile. I’ve been able to get the opportunity to mingle and interact with other people who are really making an amazing impact in their communities.
    • One lady called Grace, in the South of Kenya, is doing peace programmes bringing young girls together and trains them on the importance of maintaining peace. She really inspires me because she’s just 23 years old and has an organisation that trains other young girls to become peace ambassadors. When I look at such kinds of people I’m able to see that this is the right place that I’m supposed to be.
    • There’s a Muslim lady called Leila who lives on the coastal part of Kenya who is really engaged in building women in leadership. She’s a young leader, she’s really focussing on building her marginalised community. In Kenya Muslim ladies get a lot of opposition, they cannot talk where men are, they cannot go to the mosque and mingle with other women, they cannot hold certain positions. So, Leila is a force of change even though she’s having a lot of opposition from her community.
    • Evans Odepo is passionate about volunteerism. He drives me crazy when he talks about volunteerism because he’ll talk about it from morning to evening. He tells me that one of the things that really brought him into the limelight and offered him an opportunity is volunteerism. He says volunteerism is the bridge to opportunities, but people think volunteerism is a waste of time, but it brings us opportunities, it helps us to really serve our purpose in life. Evans is a passionate volunteer who is also building young people in entrepreneurship and leadership in Nairobi, Kenya.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • ‘I’m addicted to positive impact. I love when people are happy, I love when people are able to get hold of resources that will help them, I love when people succeed in life and I want to put myself in a crowd that really thinks the same.’
    • ‘We are partners with the UN and one of the pillars that we follow is SDGs. Right now SDGs are the main focus as an organisation and as a person, these are things that really guide us to be able to contribute to more impact in our communities.’
‘The word “relationship” is very powerful. I love stories and relationships have made me who I am because there are different forms of relationships and I love to talk about healthy relationships. When you apply and understand the art of healthy relationships, it really helps you build you as a person and it brings the community to be healthy.’
    • ‘A lot of people in Africa have had an upbringing whereby you think of others before you think of yourself. You want to make sure everybody is safe and comfortable but you don’t focus on yourself. But, if you don’t think of yourself you will not be able to have a healthy relationship. You attract who you are, if you don’t love yourself how can you love others?’

  • Mastering The Game Of Life – Paul D. Lowe & Kristin Johnson

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest and fellow World Game-Changers director, Kristin Johnson. The pair talk about the follow up book that they co-authored a few years ago, called Mastering The Game Of Life and some of the topics discussed in the last book.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Do we ever master the game of life? Our process throughout life – in my personal perspective- is to master the game of life, whatever that looks like for each of us. It’s a broad question, but it’s unique to every human.
    • A lot of people say they want to die having left a mark on the world, or leaving it a better place, or leaving their children better off than they were, or leaving a legacy for future generations, or having found love, or that they mattered. The big prize is somewhere in there, that you’re loved and love, you’ve made your mark either through fame and fortune or just in your local community where everybody knows you or that somehow you’ve contributed, that the people around you are better off because you were there, a bit like the movie It’s A Wonderful Life.
    • Love requires a lot of oneself, I think, love requires sacrifice. If you love anything you’re going to give it your all in order for it to succeed. That doesn’t necessarily mean that if a parent loves a child they’re going to give in to everything the child wants because that’s really not love. Sometimes loving people means helping them be their best selves and making their own choices, even if it’s not something we entirely agree with, we can still support them.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We say the word ‘love’ in a flippant way sometimes and what it means to love gets lost in the conversation.’
‘So many people have a hard time receiving, especially women – we’re definitely givers – though some men are givers too. There’s nothing wrong with that, there’s a lot of power in that, but it’s about loving yourself first and loving life.’
‘Addiction isn’t just about chemicals like alcohol, tobacco and drugs, it can be shopping, work and certainly the internet.’
‘There’s a dark and a light side to everything, a yin and a yang.’

  • Self-Empowering SEE Opportunities In Africa – Paul D. Lowe & Collins Mureithi

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest Collins Mureithi to talk about self-empowering opportunities in sport, education and employment in Kenya.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When I think about self-empowering in SEE opportunities, one thing that comes into my mind is making a conscious decision to change your destiny, because this involves a lot of positive choices, a lot of taking action to some of the things that we see in our community. Just having the ability to be able to make or execute decisions for the betterment of the community, or personally. Taking charge of something that you’ve seen as an opportunity and offering a solution.
    • I’ve been able to interact with people in Kenya and I know that identifying an opportunity and offering a solution are two different things. You’ll find a lot of people identify problems, but they lack the zeal to offer solutions to some of the opportunities. On the other hand, we have a lot of people in Kenya that have already identified problems and are offering solutions, but they aren’t known. We need to see how we can position these people in the limelight in order to encourage others.
    • Education comes in different forms, people have formal education and can access opportunities, in rural communities people have informal education like skills. We focus on skills education because this helps people to gain the knowledge and skills to do something like agriculture and mechanics.
    • Everybody has a purpose in life, work on yours, serve your purpose through life. It doesn’t matter what you have, use what you have to change other people’s lives and serve your purpose. It is upon you to ask what is my purpose and how can I serve it in a simple way that I can do without having to focus on big, unattainable achievements.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It comes with understanding your weaknesses as well as your strengths, you learn from them so that you can achieve what you want to achieve.’

‘Education opens opportunities and empowerment. Once you know something you are able to offer solutions to something.’

‘We empower young people in Kenya to be leaders who will become agents of positive change in their community. We do that through setting up a centre, we train them in different skills and they become problem solvers.’

‘If you don’t have money or resources, use what you have: Your purpose is about going out there, sharing love and doing good for others.’

  • Awareness-Raising And Purposeful Communication – Paul D. Lowe & Rebecca Wheele

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest and fellow director of World Game-Changers, Rebecca Wheele, to talk about LEGs 1 and 2 of the WGC 10 LEGs, Awareness Raising and Purposeful Communication and Expanding Good Health and Wellbeing.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Let’s talk about addiction and overcoming addiction. Addiction shows up in so many ways and there are so many levels of it. It seems to be a cycle, a need to be in a state of something else or escaping from the moment. It comes into the six human needs: I need certainty, I need control and even I need uncertainty and variety.
    • Communication is an art and the more that we do and the more that we practice it, not in the pursuit of perfection, but to really convey our message in a way that’s going to be really well received by people.
    • You’re going to be judged, but you’re going to be judged anyway, so you may as well be judged for doing something you want to do rather than being judged and constrained by what the outside world expects and wants you to do. There’s great freedom in that.
    • I feel like sometimes I can’t fully convey in words what I could convey, which speaks to this feeling of always wanting to be the best version of yourself. But you’ll never reach your potential because you’re always expanding and there are always lessons, and the mistakes help towards the lessons

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We’re all in pursuit of perfection, but it doesn’t matter. We all ‘err’ and ‘umm’. Don’t give yourself a hard time over it. Let it go.’

‘As humans we can lose sight of looking after ourselves. Just be gentle with yourself. There’s a lot of external pressure and expectation no matter what role we play in life, particularly on social media.’

‘Be prepared to dance on life’s floor without expectation, without outcome, without pressure. Kiss the Sun, touch the Moon, be creative, try new things.’

‘We become better dancers by choosing better dance partners. There’s merit in the saying:  We become the sum of the five people we spend most time with.’

  • Welcome To Africa, And Our 10 LEGs! – Paul D. Lowe & Crystal J. Swanigan

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Crystal J. Swanigan to talk around Africa, and WGC's 10 LEGs.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • It’s extremely important to raise awareness of the other continents so that they know we’re there for one, but that they have human needs just like we have needs, that we are all threaded together. That awareness has to be awakened. Stigmas exist that we’d like to see changed.
    • What breaks my heart is the stories from Africa of people not having the proper medication and vaccines for Covid and seeing people in other countries not wanting to take the vaccines they had. Not that anyone should be made to have it, it was the availability, they had a choice which wasn’t there in Africa. I’d like to see that choice become more an option for the people in Africa. Our health is our wealth.
    • Education is important to better our world. People in different countries don’t have the same viewpoint and could give a totally different perspective and may be able to bring cures, become scientists, teachers, preachers and do so many other things that we, with privileges, may never have thought of. It’s also important to get them employed and get money flowing through their homes. A lot of children have to leave school and get badly paid jobs to look after their families because they are lacking.
    • Individual, prosperous living. Those are the desires of people who live in Africa, they want to have the prosperous life that Americans and people in other continents have. It’s amazing how people will do anything to get to America, they can’t see themselves as being prosperous where they are and so they focus on going somewhere else. That’s not living, that’s existing.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We are a part of the world along with the other continents, lets blend and work together to help one another and grow together in this life.’

‘Nothing just happens by coincidence… If we cross paths it’s for a reason.’

‘When they see hope your mind becomes more illuminated, you can see the push that’s on the inside and they don’t mind taking the responsibility if there’s a reward.’

‘I believe there is good in everyone, partnering and networking is important because you find your match. No man is an island, we need each other. Collaboration will complete the missions all over the globe.’

  • Welcome To North America, And Our 10 LEGs! - Paul D. Lowe & Martin Leifeld

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Martin Leifeld to talk about some of the challenges that present in North America and the WGC’s 10 LEGs (Life Enhancing Goals) and how they could benefit North America.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

One of things I’m most aware of when we talk about North America is we’re talking about two dozen countries, and countries that are prosperous, like the United States, and countries that are deeply impoverished and troubled, like Haiti. As we go about trying to develop this concept of World Game-Changers North America, and an identity and an entity to serve those citizens, it’s far bigger than the US, almost 55% come from other countries with other cultures, points of view and so on.

The US is famous for scattered communications of all kinds, an overwhelming amount of communications that’s purposeless, or of a purpose that you wish was not being presented and brought to the attention of the globe. We produce all kinds of content, the good, the bad, the ugly, the very best, the very worst.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I’m so excited the World Game-Changers have globally developed these 10 LEGs as a framework for our focus and how we organise ourselves and to who we look to first in those areas to support the diversity of not just the group, but the world.’

‘A balanced life is something we’re really focused on, we’re people who understand we have to love ourselves in order to love and serve others powerfully.’

‘American’s have certainly taken a disproportionate amount of the world’s resources to make it what it has become, for better or for worse. When I think about that I think that begins with awareness.’

‘Plastic has helped revolutionise the world and it’s also seriously damaging the world. What can we do to be more mindful and reduce our consumption and use of plastics, as convenient as it may be?’
