  • Soulful Leaders – Paul D. Lowe & Rebecca Wheele

On this episode Paul is joined by returning guest, Rebecca Wheele, to talk about the importance of touch under a health related topic.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • What is touch? There are different forms: physical touch and connecting to someone energetically. When I was learning massage, my class remarked that – even though we weren’t very good at it at the beginning – just that touch, that human connection really did something. It’s really important and I think that maybe we’ve lost track of that a bit in society now.
    • I’ve always enjoyed giving massages and that hands-on helping someone. I’m really drawn to the healing element of it.
    • The spiritual is at the top and it’s the smallest part, but paradoxically it’s also the biggest because it underpins everything. The physical and are also both ever-present in the semp triangle. Perhaps it’s a circle because they are so intertwined and present.
    • We’re taught in school that this is the way things are and it’s all fixed, but it’s not, it’s fluid and flexible and we don’t have to go with the thought that ‘this is how it is’, question it, dance with it and play with it, otherwise we’re confined to these ways of thinking that may or may not serves us.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The physical touch then sparks a connection on an energetic level as well. They are intertwined, very much, and one isn’t more important than the other, like the Yin and Yang, they flow and feed the other one.’

‘I’ve always enjoyed giving massages and that hands-on feeling of helping someone. I’m really drawn to the healing element of it.’

‘It’s the angle of where we are and the perspective, to have a more holistic view we need to change that angle.’

  • What Makes A Great Leader ? (Part 2) – Paul D. Lowe & David Roberts

In this episode Paul is joined by David Roberts to talk about wealth and what part it might play in influencing a leader’s thinking.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The moment you hear the word “wealth” you think of money but, if you look at the origins of the word, it’s origins are steeped in well-being and health. I look at the whole concept of wealth – especially when linked to leadership – as about outcomes. The outcomes you’re looking to create as a leader include financial outcomes, service-related outcomes and making a difference or a change.
    • Money is not a dirty word, it’s a measure of value. If you look at money/relationships/the service you offer/deliver on your promise to the customer as a currency , they’re all valid measures of wealth. Another way of looking at wealth is as value – the difference that you make in other people’s lives.
    • I believe that leadership is actually a role of service. If you want to be somebody you need to serve somebody. That starts with yourself, but when it comes to the service of others, that’s how your role as a leader manifests.
    • One has to think about the effect one’s parents had on one’s life. It doesn’t matter how “good” a mum and/or a dad you think you were, they had an effect on you and that came with the values, the environment they created. Some may be under/over protected and both types of people have unique characteristics to learn about themselves and resolve. It’s definitely an influential role.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘What wealth means really depends on the circumstances and the motivations of the individual or the organisation.’

‘Taking the full breadth of the definition of wealth into account, there’s lots of opportunity there. If you only think of it as money and from a financial point of view you can come across as being very single-minded and that’s where the unhelpful connotations come across.’

‘The role of motherhood is definitely a key leadership role in the same way that fatherhood is also a key role.’

‘Working out what you want in life and what differences you want to make for other people will give you a really firm starting point. From there you can make decisions about what you do to create a perfect day and work towards making it happen.’

  • Intercultural Relationships (Part 2) – Bob Conlin & Rubria Mendoza

On this episode guest host Bob Conlin presents another of his relationship episodes, this time he has a guest, Rubria Mendoza, for the second of a two-part episode on cultural relationships. For example, how an intercultural relationship can impact our children.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • In our family, coming from different backgrounds and cultures, it’s been interesting the way we’ve raised our children. It’s taken a lot of communication, tons of patience for my husband and I. We had a little bit of an advantage in that before we had our kids we spoke a lot about when we had kids and we said we’d have an agreement and that we’d stick to it. It’s really helped us.
    • Now that we have our kids – two girls aged 6 and 8 – how do we raise them? It was interesting in the first years, coming from different cultures and especially the experiences I had as a kid in Mexico, I’ve passed things on to them that my American husband doesn’t understand and vice versa. For example, we don’t talk to kids about certain things till they get to a certain age, but in the US they do. My husband was explaining how a car works in technical detail and I wondered why he was overwhelming her with information, but he says they need to be engaged and pushed, but I said ‘no’, they shouldn’t be pushed, they are kids and don’t need to be pushed like that yet.
    • Having children has definitely expanded my husband’s and my opportunities to learn from each other. Our communication has improved because we have two little ones that are following us and we have different cultures to be proud of.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We agreed 12 years ago that one thing we’d do is to let our kids fail to help them learn. We’d be there to make sure they’d always have a safe spot here with us to come back to and show that failing is part of life and how they can get strong from that.’

‘There’s a way that I was brought up that I think is correct, but there is a different way that works too, and it’s fine.’

‘We both wanted our kids to be raised to have both languages, English and Spanish. We’re fortunate that at school they combine the 64 languages from all the backgrounds of the children studying there. Now they want to learn all the languages and about the cultures, which is expanding their knowledge and empathy, which we encourage.’

  • My Most Important Messages To The World (Part 2) – Paul D. Lowe & Avery Thatcher

On this episode Paul is joined for the second part of his conversation with Avery Thatcher to talk further about how having a childlike curiosity relates to health

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When we resist the changes that life throws at us, that’s where our health starts to suffer. It shows up in different ways like stress, burnout, digestive issues, etc. But, when we have curiosity, we’re able to embrace what comes at us.
    • Our bodies don’t like change, at a physiological level. We are built to maintain the status quo – homeostasis is the biological term for it – and when we do something that steps us outside of that, whether it be to challenge our bodies in different ways by starting a new exercise routine or when we experience stressful events like a global pandemic, when we try to do something new like learning a new language, our body sees that as something that’s abnormal and unsafe. Our body then responds in the same way as if a bear were running at us. It’s hard to learn to embrace that childlike curiosity if you don’t know how to master your stress switch.
    • Part of the journey is learning where beliefs are on the spectrum of serving vs sabotaging. Thoughts, beliefs, patterns that we live in, I don’t think they’re inherently good or bad, they either serve or sabotage. My high achieving nature pushes me to learn and grow and expand my impact in this world. Out of balance, it leaves me burned out, exhausted, stressed out and experiencing all the physical side-effects of stress. But, if it’s serving me then I’m in a space of clarity and alignment.
    • Music has been a massive healing tool for me. There are a number of songs that bring on the emotions that I’m looking for. If I feel an emotion is stuck and I need help expressing it, I know which song I need to go to and I completely immerse myself in that song and let it go. One of the most impactful songs that really helped my heel along my journey of becoming Avery, was a song that was written for the musical ‘The Waitress’ called ‘She Used To Be Mine’.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The more that we try to control the more we realise we can’t. Control is like trying to carry a bunch of apples.’

‘Letting go and trusting is incredibly unsafe, it really ramps up our bodies. So, we need to know how to control our stress switch and to make sure we are in alignment with the purpose and mission that we are going for. It’s easier to let things go when you have clarity on what is meant to be held on to.’

‘When we don’t try to resist what’s happening and we go with the flow, let go and really embrace the curiosity of the experience, that’s when we can really enjoy the ride of life.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Avery Thatcher says: The truth is I’ve never really felt like Heather, but then I know it’s normal to not always like your name.

Over the course of my life, I’ve walked through a lot of struggle and trauma which changed me over time. This gradual change is something that I think we can all relate to and is just a part of the human experience.

However, on December 25, 2018 I experienced a massive change in my life that happened literally overnight. I was working 12 hour shift work in a paediatric ICU and I was coming off the night shift and I remember the Charge Nurse coming up to me and saying “Heather, you really don’t look good. I’m going to mark you down as sick tonight. Feel better!”

I went home and slept for 20 hours straight.

And I did that the next day.

    And the day after that.

After nearly a year of painful medical procedures, surgery to remove a thyroid mass and half my thyroid, and multiple specialists investigations and tests, it was determined that I was now the proud owner of a chronic illness and permanent disability known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. (I call this part of me Emmy – get it? M.E. Emmy? I thought I was clever)

I worked hard for nearly three years to get back to some form of normal, and in September 2021 I realised that was never going to happen.

    I was no longer Heather.

I was no longer a Registered Nurse capable of working in an ICU.

I was no longer able to be as active as I was used to being.

I was no longer the weight I was used to being.

I was no longer the person I was used to being.

I realised I was no longer at home in my body.

I wasn’t connected to my previous identity at all and it was causing some strong PTSD dreams, intrusive thoughts and anxiety.

So after talking about it with my husband and therapist, I decided to change my name and spend days looking on baby name blogs until I found the name Avery.

It was strange at first to start referring to myself as Avery, when I had been Heather for 37 years – but now that I’ve had time for it to settle in – my goodness it’s a beautiful thing to feel at home in my body again!

To feel connected to who I am.

To start fresh, learn new habits and strategies rather than try and fit what I’m capable of now into the mould of what I used to be able to do.

So if you’ve made it this far, thank you for being a part of my journey. It’s lovely to have you in my corner.

    Much love,

    Avery

  • Unsung Heroes Of Africa, It's Time To Unite! – Paul D. Lowe & Collins Mureithi

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined for a second time by Collins Mureithi to talk about what the term ‘unsung heroes’ means to him.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Unsung heroes are people, leaders or champions who are doing something with impact wherever they are without recognition.
    • There’s a lot of negative media out there and people don’t want to share good stories, but we have a lot of heroes in Kenya, a lot of people doing amazing stuff. I have a non-profit group of about 50 young leaders who are impacting their communities every day, even without resources, but these stories are not shared or highlighted by the media. But we who are doing it are committed to continue doing it and raising other people to understand that you can change the conversation and make people aware of the good stories.
    • There are a lot of challenges. Coming up with an initiative or organisation is not easy. I decided to be a soulful leader in my community – a hero – because I started that organisation with no resources because I wanted to inspire people. But you can’t do much without resources. We’re now moving into a new bigger office and young people are starting to come to us because they feel safe with us., but we need more IT facilities to help them.
    • Heroes never see challenges as roadblocks, heroes see challenges as stepping stones to move to the next level.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘When I want people to know about what I’m doing as a soulful leader, I start by living that as a person and doing what I know is right and being what I want them to see.’

‘I started a non-profit organisation just to build young leaders who will become agents of positive change in their communities. It’s a safe space where people can come and we can have these conversations.’

‘There’s an issue of ‘dependency syndrome’ among Africans, they depend on being given thongs. That’s a mindset that we as an organisation are trying to remove from people.’

‘In Kenya we may have the local resources but the government sometimes makes it very hard for people to get them because there’s a lot of corruption.’

  • Soulful Leaders Of Africa, It's Time To Unite! – Paul D. Lowe & Collins Mureithi

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by Collins Mureithi to talk about the challenges in African communities that can only really be overcome with good, effective leadership and to explain what the term ‘soulful leaders’ means to him.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Soulful leader is a person who brings service to humanity and is someone who is able to serve their community or humanity through giving his purpose in life or through giving without expecting or receiving anything. It’s a servant leadership process. When I serve my community in Kenya, I don’t look at what I’m getting, I serve because I know it’s all about giving/serving with love.
    • The reason I started a programme on leadership is because a lot of people do not understand the true definition of leadership. What needs to be done is to help people understand what exactly leadership is and who is a soulful leader. I see a lot of leaders who just want to be in positions because of what they get out of it. For example, in Kenya a lot of young people see that if they want to accumulate more wealth they need to be in leadership.  It’s the wrong mindset.
    • People need to understand that the definition of heaven is what you choose to do, and whatever you do as a person will either haunt you negatively or positively. It’s all about choice. It today I decided to be a servant leader because I’ve decided to serve with love. But if I decide to be a transactional leader, which comes with its own negative attributes, that’s my choice too. The heaven you want to have is upon you to choose what you want to do and that choice will come back to impact you negatively or positively.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Every day I serve my purpose through what I do and it revolves around love.’

‘When you accumulate things not in the right way, every day you have fear, but if you serve in the right way there’s no way you will have fear.’

‘Technology has made the world into a village and we need to learn from the experts what the definition of leadership and soulful leadership is because if we understand it and know what you’re supposed to do as a soulful leader, you can go and build others to be agents of positive change in the community.’

  • Soulful Leaders: Dancing With Money – Rosemary Cunningham

Paul is joined on this episode by returning guest Rosemary Cunningham to talk about another subject close to her heart: Soulful leaders, something Paul will be exploring on the podcast in the future.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I work with heart-centred business owners, these people aren’t led by financial gain despite it being a necessary part of business, their first motivator is to make a difference.
    • We all have different motivators and they often come from when we were small and being taught about money and worth. You can be taught that if you’re not good you don’t get what you want and if you ask for it you’ll probably get rejected which, as an empath, can be very very painful. That can make asking for what we want all the way down the line in life – from asking for a wage increase to asking for money back that you lent someone – very challenging.
    • Certain aspects of money archetypes, which are aspects of you, can be fighting each other; one of them wants to keep it really close and not spend it, the other may want to take some risks. It can almost be like you’re having an internal battle about what’s right, what’s doable, what’s acceptable and what’s safe.
    • Soulful leadership is listening to people, hearing their concerns, treating people with kindness, consideration, allowing people to have their say and be heard and leading the way from a heart place where the first motivation is service rather than holding onto your piece of the pie so nobody else can have any. Women will give more money from their earnings into their community, charity and will support people that are up and coming more than men. Men can be soulful leaders as well, but it’s predominantly a divine feminine energy.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We’re rewriting all the rules around business at the moment.’

‘I’m most effective in my business when I tune into my soul for guidance.’

‘The idea of scarcity and sufficiency is also a very powerful one and this goes back to the Adam Smith economics which our economy is based on: A country only made enough money to match how much gold it had, the Gold Standard, which bears no relation to what happens now at all. But the training still teaches that.’

‘People are waking up all over the place desperate to change systems like banking and bit by bit they will.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Rosemary Cunningham’s first career was nursing, but she had problems with her hands which meant it couldn’t be her full time career.

She founded her own complementary therapy business in 1993 where she helps women who want to find their passion and purpose and create a business that brings all of themselves into one pot. She’s a healer, a business and money coach, a nurse, she can be very grounded and extremely spiritual too.

Rosemary has always loved her work but it has been very challenging. Her mission now is to help her clients find a much easier path. Business can be fun, light and even easy… it’s all about mindset.

Recently, Rosemary studied brain training and conscious creation and this is part of her coaching. She helps her clients find new ways of thinking and speaking to create a very different reality, the one they really want, not the one they think they deserve or have been taught is for them.

She left her part time nursing job in 1999 to run the business full time and now works with women who really want to make a difference.

  • Inter-Cultural Relationships (Part One) – Bob Conlin & Rubria Mendoza

On this episode guest host Bob Conlin presents another of his relationship episodes, this time he has a guest, Rubria Mendoza, for the first of a two-part episode on cultural relationships. For example, what are some of the challenges and benefits of being in a relationship with someone from a different culture.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I was born in Mexico but moved to the US when I married an American. It’s been a great journey, but those first years were tough. It’s really important to keep honest with ourselves and not force the other person to embrace our culture and traditions, but to make them part of it.
    • In my family, we have specific traditions. We’re a big family and we love gathering, we love to hug people, to be close to them, sleep next to them, touch a lot while we are talking, etc. A lot of my husband’s family don’t like big reunions or any of these things. I started to restrict myself and change to fit them, but it created a big issue because I was not happy. Eventually, we both said what we were and weren’t comfortable doing and we both said we’d do certain things but not others – it doesn’t mean I don’t like your friends or love you family, but I’ll keep my distance or I’ll join in, but we shouldn’t force each other.
    • My culture has a tendency to please people, for example giving the choice of pizza and pasta for dinner and I want pasta but he says pizza and I have pizza even though I don’t want it. Communication is so important, my husband used to communicate in a short way which made me feel like he was upset, but it was just the way he communicates where I like to know why it’s a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ and go into detail.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘When you start a relationship with someone that comes from a completely different background and culture, the key for me is not to lose your own identity to please the other person.’

‘Every marriage has ups and downs, and I learned this the hard way! But I’m glad I did that because now, I’m hoping our kids see that there’s a different way to do it and it will bring joy and benefits to their lives and futures in terms of relationships.’

‘Communication is a challenge for any relationship, but inter-culturally it’s a little bit more.’

‘It’s been a great opportunity for me to learn what I’m capable of doing in terms of learning how to live with someone and say things in a different way that mean the same.’

  • My Cancer Was A Blessing In Disguise (Part 4) – Paul D. Lowe & Sam Hales

In this episode Paul is joined by Sam Hales, for the last in a four part episode, to talk about the most commonly used powerful three words: “Let it go”, and what they mean both in life and in recovering from cancer.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Most of us go through huge traumatic events in our younger lives that we carry around with us and, if it’s not addressed, then it shows itself in physical form like I believe mine did in cancer and other ways as well. It gets to a point when you come to deal with your traumas and your hurt that you literally do have to let it go or it will keep on growing.
    • From diagnosis I had to change my whole lifestyle, which I think everybody should address. But I also permitted myself some time to find out exactly who I was, and from that I believe that because I was so stripped back of everything and naked, and this façade I was carrying around that I wanted people to know me as was gone, I was literally stripped back bare to the essence of who I was and I had to accept that
    • There was also a spiritual element where I was trying to find my sole purpose and I was subconsciously asking myself where I go from here because I’m at a pivotal point in my life and I’m clearly not happy. Where do I go from here? In the process of trial and error, trying new things and speaking to different people, I learned I love learning the many ways in which we can heal ourselves.
    • Cancer was definitely a blessing in disguise because now I truly believe I’m on the path I was meant to be on.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We tend to punish ourselves a lot, especially as Mums, for the silliest of things. Sometimes you have to let it go and say “there’s nothing I can do about it, see you later!” We can’t hold onto our past traumas and hurt otherwise it will keep coming up and presenting itself.’

‘I love bringing people together for the purpose of healing, for the purpose of raising the vibration of the planet, it makes my heart and soul sing.’

‘It makes me happy to make other people happy and change their life by offering sound healing, kinesthesiology, shamanic healing, etc so their souls can ascend to their next soul purpose.’

‘We’re all here for a reason, we’re all here for a purpose.’

  • Getting To Know You – Paul D. Lowe & Andrew Lenzo

Paul is joined once more by Andrew Lenzo, the owner of 303 Media and host of The Lenzo Media Podcast, to talk about getting to know each other, striking up conversations with people – sometimes strangers – that come with a certain energy.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • You shouldn’t judge people based on what they look like or where you think they come from. You really have to get to know a person, especially today when it’s so easy to travel and to really be your authentic self, it’s such a stupid thing to do, to have so many preconceptions ahead of meeting somebody.
    • We still find ways to bring in discourse to things like football and hockey, for example, something that’s entertainment, something you watch to escape from your day-to-day. You find an allegiance to your group, even if it makes no sense, it’s very easy to get caught up in that. Everyone is looking for some kind of culture to identify with, for a feeling of not being alone, especially in the United States.
    • The most solidly formed opinions come from people who challenge their own beliefs and opinions. The more you challenge it, the more you’re going to rethink your psyche and what you believe in it. But the only way to do that is to open yourself up to criticism and listen to others opinions that challenge yours. A lot of people like to surround themselves with like-minded people and thoughts and not challenge their beliefs. But to push yourself and find your strong psyche you have to challenge yourself and be open to that criticism.
    • When he pandemic happened, a lot of people for the first time in a long time could just sit and think, they were at home with their families – or they were alone – and being able to sit and reflect on where you are in life and what you want out of life really did good for a lot of people in terrible circumstances. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and burned out by work, take the time, take a few days, don’t go watch TV, turn it and your computer off, take a notebook and sit down and really think about where you’re at and where you’re going to be. Why do you do the work that you do? What are you accomplishing? Why is it important to the world? What impact will it leave on the world after you’re gone? That’s a very important thing to focus on, especially if you’re that busy and you’re dedicating that much time to your work.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘One thing that we talk about as podcasters is the importance of listening and letting the person across from you talk.’

‘As you get older and the more you put yourself out there the easier it is to forget about those judgments.’

‘A lot of us are just trying to get by, working lots of hours to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. But I do believe that you owe it to yourself to challenge your beliefs and to really figure out who you are as a person.’

‘I feel like it’s healthy to have a certain amount of ego, to believe in yourself and have self-confidence. But it can be a very selfish and unhealthy thing to have in some contexts.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Before the pandemic, Andrew and his friend Austin were working as journalists at their college newspaper. Often underfunded and overlooked by major players at the university, they were forced to think outside the box when it came to funding.

“How can we get the most exposure for stories that had, and still have, a major impact on people in the community without ruining the integrity of our publication?

Members of the community often used their paper to make major political and social decisions that have a huge impact on the direction of the city and its citizens.

“How can you make an informed decision when there’s no independent news outlet giving you the facts?”

That’s where 303 Media started. In the musky, dirty, and damp offices of King Hall. Since graduating, they’ve continued that promise to empower those who don’t think they have the resources to take the next step.

Today, small businesses are fighting for exposure more than ever. Small businesses make up 99.9% of all businesses in the United States, yet corporations account for 62% of all revenues.

Online review platforms, search engines, and social media are the customer’s go-to source for information when learning about a new business. 91% of customers will visit a store because of an online experience.

It’s not easy to stay competitive in this landscape, but 303 Media is sticking to the mission.
