  • When Saturday Comes: I'm Really Creative - Steve Corry

“When Saturday Comes” isn’t just a clarion call to the football lovers of the world, but also a beacon of respite to those who’ve spent the week at their labours.

Paul is joined by Steve Corry to discuss the importance of the weekend, and how he personally uses this hallowed time each week to develop himself, to pursue his passion of football, and more recently, to help others enjoy the beautiful game.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The “weekend” as a concept has become a time of rest, reflection and creativity; a time we have all grown to treasure as a society, as a time when we can indulge our creative sides in our respective leisure pursuits.
    • Those with impairments have just as much right to enjoy football as everyone else. Steve has made it his mission to help those with visual impairments to keep their love and involvement in the game.
    • Preaching about a subject you’re passionate about doesn’t necessarily require a qualification. We do it because we love it, and because we want the world to share that love.
    • The moments that complicate our lives are generally motivated by negativity, greed or materialism. The truly memorable moments, the ones that live on in our hearts, are the moments of connection and love.

    BEST MOMENTS

’That golden period at the weekend is theirs to express their talents’

    ’Spend time - not money’

’They don’t want to miss the feel of the plastic seat, or the smell of the burger van’

‘If somebody’s big enough to pay you a compliment, be big enough to accept it with grace'

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Football has been a way of life for Steve, for as long as he can remember – playing it, writing about it, and now commentating on it.

Despite failing to make a career out of the professional game, it’s presented him with some amazing experiences and opportunities along the way.

Aptly, the game of life is more important to him than football, and it’s one which anybody can win, with the right perspective.

Steve is forever indebted to his parents – both of whom are Irish immigrants – for the values they’ve instilled in him.  He’s proud to carry their DNA, and treats everyone he meets with respect, and without prejudice.

He lives a simple, uncomplicated life, which has served him well thus far.

    ABOUT THE HOST

One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!”

Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity.

Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising.

  • Vulnerability: A Must For Dating? - Kelly Braendli

Paul talks to dating & relationship expert Kelly Braendli about the fascinating topic of vulnerability in dating, and why allowing yourself to lower those defences might well be the key to finding true, and long-lasting love.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Expectation plays a big part in how vulnerable we feel. The expectations of society, or even from potential partners, affects how we act, and how much of ourselves we reveal.
    • Tapping into vulnerabilities and past experiences can allow matchmaking to take place on a far more natural level. Often we subconsciously carry baggage from previously painful relationships that can affect our prospects.
    • In early dating, people often become stuck in a rut when it comes to discovering about potential partners. We can break this train of thought by asking a random question.
    • The four levels of connections we, as humans, use to form bonds are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Vulnerability is about taking a risk; it’s about putting ourselves out there’

’Today this is a completely open playing-field for us’

‘Vulnerability is at the core when you want to build a loving relationship’

‘We’ll be different people a year from now'

    ‘Vulnerability is your power’

  • Dealing With Stress - A Question Of Hope? - Carole Spiers

After seeing far too many people dealing with stress, post-trauma and anxiety in a variety of different industries, author and speaker, Carole Spiers, renowned for her wisdom and guidance on building resilience, has made it her mission to reduce stress by promoting a message of hope.

In this week’s show, Carole talks to Paul about the ways in which she hopes to build health and wellbeing, the difference between stress and pressure, and why helping others is more of a calling, than a job.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Stress is not good for anyone, although some believe it be a great motivator. The best motivator is pressure, which can be managed.
    • Now more than ever, the need for collaboration and communication has never been more important. We should be seeking opportunities to do so every single day.
    • Hope is a vital component. Positivity and optimism are the values we need to hold onto. We need to look for opportunities for learning and growth in every situation.
    • A healthy workplace culture is one that encourages feedback and innovative thinking, but more importantly, rewards that thinking and input with gratitude and encouragement.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You can thrive on pressure. It gets you up in the morning’

’Not everyone can find that inner strength and resilience in order to manage their daily lives’

‘I connect people with people. We all need to help each other’

’The very simple words are “How can I help you?"'

  • When Saturday Comes: I'm Extremely Athletic - Daniel Taylor

As the former chief football writer for The Guardian, and now as one of the senior sports writers for The Athletic, Daniel Taylor is one of the most experienced and authoritative voices in sports journalism today.

Daniel joins Paul today to talk about the highs and lows of writing about your passion, the enchanted power of awaiting football on a Saturday, and what it means to football lovers around the world...

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Saturday has become the hallowed day for many football fans globally; the day upon which dreams are held up to the test. For any football fan, it is the magical day upon which their hopes are risked, and when heroes are made.
    • Sports journalists have to accept that at times they will not be flavour of the month with fans or players. It’s part and parcel of the job, as true journalism requires critical honesty.
    • Sports journalists gain respect by being open and transparent about their thoughts, as well as their identity. This can prove difficult when opposed by an army of anonymous dissenters.
    • Working in sports journalism does, unfortunately, transform the game from a heartfelt passion to a job. It is worth the sacrifice, but it does alter one’s perspective.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You do not give up on your football team’

’I have to know who I am. I’m a journalist first and foremost’

‘I don’t see it as the beautiful game anymore’

‘All of that tribal stuff gets a little bit knocked out of you when you get your work head on’

  • Communicate With Impact, Or Be Ignored - Keith Daniell

As one of the world’s leading communications specialists, no one knows more about the effect of impactful communication than Keith Daniell, a former television presenter and journalist for the likes of ITV and Channel 4.

As Keith explains in this week’s conversation, communication now is more important than ever. He offers some practical advice on how you can maximise the impact of your communication in this new world, which we now seem to have been suddenly thrust...

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • New communication technologies, such as video conferencing and remote conversations, will not be going away, even when the effects of lockdown are lifted.
    • It is now more important than ever to recognise not just the ways in which humanity communicates verbally, but also the more nuanced ways in which we physically communicate, and seek to replicate this through new means.
    • Communication is too often filtered through pretence due to our need to appear in a certain light when with certain people. This can easily be demonstrated by comparing the way in which we communicate with strangers, and how we communicate with those we know best.
    • Communication is generally believed to 55% physiology, 38% tonality and 7% verbal (words). This demonstrates the need for a greater depth of expression than merely verbal.
    • Learning is actually maximised by failure. Failure in any task instils within us a greater sense of achievement when we are victorious.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If we want to make a difference then we need to have the ability to make an impact’

’There’s no point trying to teach someone to curve the ball like Beckham!’

‘Life is simple, but we complicate it’

‘What we actually say is often less important than the way we say it'

  • Transition - When You Know It's Time To Let It Go! - Kym Hamer

This time around it’s all change, as Paul becomes the special guest of this week’s host, the marvellous Kym Hamer!

Change is very much part of the conversation, too, as Kym and Paul discuss the driving forces behind change in our own lives, the value of leading from the front, and futility of striving for perfection.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Perfection is an unattainable ideal; a story we tell ourselves in order to have something to shoot for. But it is unrealistic and more importantly, imaginary.
    • Change becomes far easier when we obey the voice of our hearts, instead of the negative force of reason that prevents us from stepping outside our comfort zone.
    • When we make rigid plans, life has a funny way of erecting obstacles between us and our goals. Always be prepared to adapt.
    • We’re conditioned to believe that our mind is the ruler of our lives. We need to instead recognise that it is important, but not the defining organ in our body. It should be seen as a smaller part of a greater whole.

    BEST MOMENTS

’The more uncertainty we can embrace in our lives, the greater our successes’

‘If we always did what we’ve always done, then we’ll always get what we’ve always got’

  • I’m Glad I Did, Rather Than I Wish I Had – Sharon Griffiths

Do we really ever wish to reach a point in our lives when we look back wistfully at the missed opportunities of life, wishing that we could go back in time and do things differently?

Regret is one of the most heart-breaking feelings we experience, and crucially, is a feeling we can never truly escape. But as Paul’s guest, Sharon Griffiths discusses, the power is within us all to make sure that we never have to regret a moment.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We tell ourselves stories with easy outcomes, and expect our own outcomes to conform to these. By realising that our stories do not have to fit these moulds, we liberate our expectations.
    • We can create our own outcomes, and therefore our own happiness, by shaping our own destinies, and making peace with even our shortcomings.
    • If you don’t have a plan to take you constantly further, then how can you hope to scale up or improve? Without an evolving map for the road ahead, even victories can seem like barriers.

    BEST MOMENTS

  • It's Time To UPLIFT The World - Janet Groom

In the face of a radically changed world, message and thoughts of hope are crucial. With this in mind, author Janet Groom has created the UPLIFT Project, an ongoing, collaborative compilation of positivity from a richly diverse group of contributors. Its aim is to inspire, motivate, and of course, to uplift!

Janet joins Paul today to share her incredible message of hope, and to talk about how the need for empowerment and positive reinforcement is needed now more than ever.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • No one can tell you how to be perfect. We can only hold up our experiences in life so far, and talk about how we have reached this point.
    • No one can possibly know everything. There is always room for improvement, development and growth. Those who profess to be experts are merely limiting their potential level of knowledge.
    • To be the person we truly are, we need to remove the masks and become the natural version of ourselves.
    • Hope is what the world needs now more than anything. It is the only way the world will not just move past COVID, but rebuild in the wake of its devastation.

    Mastering The Game Of Life

  • Alison Arnoff - Why It's Important To Live Your Values

This week, Paul is joined by coach and mentor, Alison Arnoff, who talks about the importance of instilling values, and why it’s important ensure that every decision is life is driven in alignment with them.

As Alison discusses, by recognising our personal values, and the factors we truly hold as important, we can better achieve lasting happiness.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Values are the “North Stars”, the foundational points in our lives that define who we are and how we interact with the world around us.
    • Monetary gain, and achieving lofty positions in business, are the general aims of everyone embarking upon a career path. But they may not always necessarily be the core values to which we personally aspire.
    • It’s useful to break down each prospective value to its core elements, in order to better find the drivers that serve us. Making money is a broad term, but can be a signal that one of our values is to provide for those we love.
    • Mastering the game of life is the art of filtering out the advice of others, and deciding on a course of life that is personal and beneficial to you and others.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Without any navigation, you can’t find your way home’

‘Is there the possibility of an “and” instead of an “or”?’

‘I’m more concerned by the depth of our values instead of the number of them’

‘You can make it work if you turn off the voices outside and listen to the truth inside your head and your heart'

    ABOUT THE GUEST

What Alison enjoyed most throughout her 25 years in the corporate world, was being able to take what I learned and sharing it with others to solve problems; to bring about positive outcomes that helped companies succeed and grow.  It was this desire to serve that led her to coaching.  She craved the interaction with the type of high performers she’d known in both tech and her years as a sports competitor. Dare2Be was formed.

In her life, Alison has experienced what many of her clients are going through -- the need to complete her journey on her own terms, holding true to her values, testing herself to see if she’s up to a new challenge and leaving a positive legacy.  Now her mission is to coach others through the same turning points she experienced, and though we’re all different, many of our basic needs are the same: support, encouragement, validation.  We need to be inspired to Dare2Be.
