    Christoph Beuttler is Head of Climate Policy for Climeworks, the Swiss DAC pioneer. He is also a Founding Board Member and President of the Negative Emissions Platform, a Board Member of CO2 Value Europe, a Senior Expert for the Risk Dialogue Foundation, and a Visiting Lecturer at ETH Zurich. Christoph was educated in Heidelberg and London, with a background in Economics, Management and Sustainability.

    ABOUT OUR PRESENTER
    Chris Magwood is founder of The Endeavour Centre and teaches in the Sustainable Building & Design program, Natural Building Intensive and many workshops where he enjoys sharing what he’s learned over his 25-year building career and inspiring others to take this stuff seriously and do it well.
    Chris has authored seven books on sustainable building, including: Essential Sustainable Home Design (2017), Essential Hempcrete Construction (2016) and Making Better Buildings (2014) and contributed a chapter to the book The New Carbon Architecture. He is co-editor of the Sustainable Building Essentials series from New Society Publishers. He is currently at work on a new book, Building Beyond Zero: New Ideas for Carbon Smart Architecture (Island Press).
    Chris recently completed his MA at Trent University, studying carbon storage potential of the built environment. His thesis, Opportunities for Carbon Capture and Storage in Building Materials was published in April, 2019. Chris is an active speaker and workshop instructor in Canada and internationally.

    In this webinar OpenAir welcomes Dr. David Goldberg from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Dr. Goldberg provides an overview of geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide, and the terrestrial and offshore sequestration opportunities in New York, with a focus on the co-location opportunity with offshore wind.

    DR. DAVID GOLDBERG is a Lamont Research Professor at Columbia UniversitY. His interests focus on the integration of different technologies and cross-disciplinary approaches to develop achievable climate solutions. Goldberg received his undergraduate and MS degrees in earth and planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his doctorate in geophysics and an MBA from Columbia University. He conducted post-doctoral studies at the Institute Français du Petrole in Paris and has been at Lamont-Doherty since 1985. He also currently serves as a core faculty member for the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy at Columbia and Deputy Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University.

    For this episode of This Is CDR we are pleased to welcome Dr. Matthew Eisaman (Stony Brook University) to review the oceanic carbonate cycle and present SEA MATE, an electrochemical alkalinity enhancement and CDR process he is developing.

    MATTHEW EISAMAN is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at Stony Brook University. Prof. Eisaman received an A.B. in physics from Princeton in 2000 (magna cum laude), a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard in 2006, was an NRC Postdoc at NIST from 2006-2008, a member of the research staff at Xerox PARC from 2008-2011, and a physicist at Brookhaven National Lab from 2011-2014. He holds 18 patents and has co-authored 33 papers with over 4000 citations. Over the past ten years, a significant part of Prof. Eisaman’s research effort has been spent developing negative emissions technologies that capture CO2 from the air using the natural ocean-atmosphere equilibrium.

Habib’s presentation includes a review of current tech pathways and use cases; and a discussion of his influential recent paper (authored with Dr. Klaus Lackner) “Buying Down the Cost of Direct Air Capture.”

    PRESENTER
    Habib Azarabadi is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with Arizona State University’s Center for Negative Carbon Emissions. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and earned a Masters and PhD in Sustainable Engineering from Arizona State University. Habib’s research focuses on environmental and economic analysis of direct air carbon capture technology, as well as positioning DACC technology in the existing energy infrastructure and scaling through mass production.

    This week we are pleased to welcome biochar expert Kathleen Draper, Chairman of the International Biochar Initiative, to provide an overview of biochar, and to outline its potential as a CDR solution, as well as the many co-benefits it offers.
    Kathleen Draper is the Board Chair of the International Biochar Initiative, as well as U.S. Director for the Ithaka Institute for Carbon Intelligence, a non-profit, open source organization focused on the use of biochar in climate farming, agroforestry as well as other industrial uses of biochar. She is the co-author of ‘Burn: Using Fire to Cool the Earth’ and ‘TerraPreta: How the World’s Most Fertile Soil Can Help Reverse Climate Change and Reduce World Hunger’. She has a Master’s degree in Managing for Sustainability.

    In this episode of This is CDR we are pleased to welcome Dr. Garrett Boudinot from Cornell to introduce us to enhanced rock weathering (ERW), and outline how “rock dust” as a soil amendment has the potential to remove gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere in the coming decades.
    Garrett Boudinot is a Research Associate with Cornell’s Deptarment of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also works as a Community Science Fellow with the American Geophysical Union’s Thriving Earth Exchange and serves as a science advisor at ClimateMusic.
    Garrett completed his PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder on the ecological impacts of climate change after receiving his Bachelors in both geology and religious studies at the College of Charleston.

    For our inaugural session, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Evvan Morton to provide an introduction to the principles of CDR, and explore why permanent removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is an essential component of net-zero aligned climate policy.
    Evvan Morton (@E_doubleV_PhD)obtained her Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering from Arizona State University with a certificate in Responsible Innovation. Evvan’s research examined the effectiveness of U.S. policies that govern carbon dioxide emissions and atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change, and explored the necessity for carbon dioxide removal through political, technological, and ethical lenses. Evvan is also the co-founder of BioGals, a non-profit organization that empowers women of color in STEM through participation in global sustainable-development projects.
