This week on This Is CDR we are pleased to welcome Dr. Peter Kelemen of Columbia University’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory to tell us about his extensive research into mineralization pathways for CDR.

Peter Kelemen studies the chemical and physical processes of reaction between fluids and rocks. He has worked on the genesis and evolution of oceanic and continental crust, chemical cycles in subduction zones, and new mechanisms for earthquake initiation. His primary focus now is on geologic capture and storage of CO2 (CCS), and reaction-driven cracking processes in natural and engineered settings, with application to CCS, the global carbon cycle on Earth & Mars, geothermal power generation, hydrocarbon extraction, in situ mining. He teaches a popular course on “Earth Resources for Sustainable Development” and a new course on “Carbon Storage” at Columbia, as well as courses and seminars on petrology, geochemistry, and geodynamics.

Kelemen was a founding partner of Dihedral Exploration (1980-1992), consultants specializing in exploration for mineral deposits in steep terrain, with contracts in Canada, Alaska and Greenland. Research and climbing have taken him to Peru, India, Oman, the Aleutian Islands, 7,500 meters above sea level in Pakistan, and 5,500 meters below sea level via submersibles along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Kelemen received his AB from Dartmouth College in 1980, and his PhD from the University of Washington in 1987. He spent 16 years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution before moving to Columbia’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in 2004.

Kelemen was recently awarded the American Geophysical Union Hess Medal. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the Mineralogical Society of America, and the Geochemical Society.

Prof. Kate Moran is the President & CEO, Ocean Networks Canada. Her previous appointment was Professor at the University of Rhode Island with a joint appointment in the Graduate School of Oceanography and the Department of Ocean Engineering. She also served as the Graduate School of Oceanography’s Associate Dean, Research and Administration. From 2009 to 2011, Moran was seconded to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy where she served as an Assistant Director and focused on Arctic, polar, ocean, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and climate policy issues. Professor Moran is active in public outreach on topics related to the Arctic, ocean drilling, and climate change. She has also testified on climate change to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

Dr. David Goldberg is a Lamont Research Professor at Columbia University and his interests focus on the integration of different technologies and cross-disciplinary approaches to develop achievable climate solutions. Goldberg conducted postdoctoral studies at the Institut Français du Petrole in Paris and was a laureate of the “Make Our Planet Great Again” program, an initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron to promote international cooperation in climate research. He has over 20 years of experience in geological carbon sequestration, scientific drilling, site assessments, and marine seismology and led the US DOE Cascadia CarbonSAFE project in 2017 to study CO2 storage in offshore basalt. He also currently serves as Deputy Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Dave earned a BS and MS from MIT, and a PhD and MBA from Columbia University.

Ning Zeng is a professor at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, University of Maryland, and affiliate professor with the Department of Geology and the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute. He earned a BS degree in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China, MS degree in Astrophysics and Ph.D in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Arizona. He worked at MIT, UCLA, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, and the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology. His professional interests include climate change and variability, carbon cycle and ecosystem, carbon sequestration and other technical solutions and policy implications of climate change. He is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher and on Reuters' Hot List of Top Climate Scientists. He is a founding co-chief editor of the journal Earth System Dynamics. He was Chair of the 9th International CO2 Conference. He is a contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports and the Global Carbon Project. He served on the US CLIVAR panel and the US Carbon Cycle Science Working Group.

Max is the Head of Commercialization at Heirloom. He has spent the last ten years building software, hardware and robotics in financial services and autonomous vehicles. Before Heirloom, he was responsible for bringing to market Nuro’s delivery service with some of the world’s largest partners, including Kroger, Walmart, Domino’s and CVS. At Heirloom he oversees the go-to-market, policy, and partnerships functions.

Noah is a co-founder and head of research at Heirloom. Noah’s expertise surrounds carbon capture and removal, with a focus on carbon mineralization technologies and direct air capture systems. This includes process design, alongside the use of both techno-economic analyses and life cycle assessments to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of carbon removal systems. Noah holds a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Colorado School of Mines.

In this session of This Is CDR week we welcome Yasemin Kologlu and Aaron Zeligs, Design Director and Design Associate for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill's (SOM) New York office. Yasemin and Aaron will present Urban Sequoia, a brilliant proposal to use architecture, design and planning to reinvent the urban built environment into a network for absorbing carbon. The project initially premiered at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in November. Taking inspiration from natural processes and ecosystems, the plan envisions “forests” of buildings that sequester carbon and produce biomaterials to create a new carbon economy and a resilient urban environment.

Yasemin Kologlu is a design director in SOM’s New York office. Kologlu adopts a forward-thinking and holistic approach to design that integrates wellbeing, environmental design, and technology. She is a strong advocate for equality, diversity, and innovation in the design industry. Kologlu joined the firm in 2004 and has since worked in SOM’s New York and London offices. Her portfolio of completed projects is diverse—it includes innovative headquarters, near-zero-energy offices, and net zero-carbon residential and mixed-use developments. Kologlu is an industry recognized leader and mentor in sustainable design and construction. She is a founder and firm-wide leader of SOM’s Climate Action Group, which promotes stronger sustainable practices in our built environment. She is part of the Carbon Leadership Forum NY (CLFNY) Steering Committee, AIA New York’s Committee on the Environment (COTE), and the Building Energy Exchange (BE-Ex) Architect Advisory Council, and has contributed to multiple industry advisory groups to help shape New York City and State policies on carbon and energy.

Aaron Zeligs is a design associate in SOM’s New York Office. In his work he seeks to negotiate the contact point between Architecture and Engineering with a focus on complex, mixed-use, tall buildings. Interweaving a sense of local culture and site ecologies into his work, he is interested in New Modalities for Urban placemaking and Architectural Design. Aaron leverages a unique design perspective as a prior aerospace engineer, integrating architecture, sustainable technology, and performance oriented design. Academically, Aaron looks to create new dialogues around digital technologies and computational tools, pursuing emerging material research and contemporary carbon theory. Aaron holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the US Air Force Academy, and a M-Arch from The University of California, Los Angeles.

Prior to this, he served as Founding Co-Director of the Institute for Carbon Removal Law & Policy at American University’s School of International Service in Washington, DC. He also served as President of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences, as well as a Senior Research Fellow for the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
