Anxiety isn’t a disorder. It is distrust. How easy it is to become distracted and consumed by the cares of this world, until our concerns have completely obscured our view of God! Instead of casting our cares upon the Lord, we focus on them until anxiety reigns. As with all things, God knows our sinful tendencies and in loving care for our souls, He gives us clear instructions on how to turn from anxiety and put on thankfulness.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

When this is the day  you are consumed with anxiety, first turn to prayer. Even if you don't feel like it, pray anyway. Then read the Bible and pray some more. We pray because he tells us to, and we love to obey him. Prayer changes us. Submitting our desires to him through prayer - having our very desires changed and shaped through prayer - that brings glory to God.

Conflict is inevitable. But just because it’s inevitable, doesn’t mean it has to be sinful. Conflict actually gives us the opportunity to practice being peacemakers, which is to put into practice, the head knowledge we have about acting righteously. But that can ONLY occur when we have one focus: to glorify God.

When this is the day  that strife, disputing, and discord are running rampant, and you want to judge rightly without being critical, use scripture as your compass to determine the standard. Strive to model the attributes of God: love, mercy, compassion, and patience. Only then will you be prepared to judge righteously.

We get these grand ideas of how we think life should be but it rarely plays out like we want it to. In return, our hearts grow weary as we fret and stew on it, trying to take control of things out of our control, fixing our hearts and minds on the problem at hand, instead of on the one who is sovereign over every problem. 

Inclining our hearts away from ourselves, and towards the living God who provides our every breath, is the only way to relieve that overwhelmed burden. How do we incline our hearts towards Him? By giving thanks. Thanking God realigns our heart to worship, instead of settling into a rut of self indulgent pride.

When this is the day that chaos reigns, give thanks to God. It’s his will for you to do so (1 Thessalonians). In the midst of every trial, in whatever chaos God has in store for you, no matter how inconviencied you are, how frustrated you are, how heart broken you are - give thanks to God.

Once upon a time… and the fairytale ended there. But God wrote a story that was better than any fable, because every trial, heartache, and lament, pointed Elizabeth to Christ and his glory, teaching her endurance, producing in her a spiritual strength, the kind that knocks you on your knees in prayer. As His ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9), God’s sovereign design caused Elizabeth to grow in steadfastness, even while her husband grew harder of heart. But God, being rich in mercy...

When this is the day  you’re growing weary - weary of an unequally yoked marriage or unsaved children or loved ones, do not be discouraged. God is near to the broken hearted, and His sovereign will is perfect and good. He will quiet the discontented murmuring of your heart when you trust in Him. No matter what the day brings, His comfort will be enough, even if your circumstances don't change on this earth. Pray without ceasing.

Bad reviews, spiritual gifts, and serving the body in love. We’re talking about worshiping God through serving in your local church! Spiritual gifts matter, but perhaps not like you think they do. Spoiler: you have to be a member of a local church so you can serve in it, in order to obey this commans.

When this is the day  you realize that you only serve the church through the required parent volunteer role in the nursery, OR you serve in every role, but with a grumbling heart, OR you’re looking for applause and get none, OR when you wish you had a bigger, better role, OR you think you could just do so many things better than someone else…

STOP IT. Just stop it.

Kill the ants, pull the weeds, take out trash, offer to clean up that one room that looks a mess, agree to speak to moms even if you don’t like speaking in public, greet the people, wash the dishes, teach the kids, rock the babies, iron the linens, wash the windows, paint the rooms, manage the sound, lead the worship. Do whatever needs done with a joyful, desiring to serve the Lord. He will work out his gifts in you, for His glory. All you need is a willing, humble heart.

Fools hate God. Calling one a fool is truly a cutting insult. They do not love him, know him, or seek to understand. Yet, even faithful believers can act foolishly. What’s the antidote to being a fool? Getting wisdom. 

Wisdom is biblical knowledge in action. It’s not enough to know about the Lord, if we don’t put that knowledge into action. TODAY. Now. This is our era, our moment, to put into practice what we know now, and not waste any more time being a fool.

When this is the day  you’re sharing the gospel with someone, and you’re tempted to leave out the part about eternal consequences - don’t. His wrath is perfect, holy, just, righteous, and kind. And nobody can know God without knowing - and believing - that too. God’s wrath is experienced by the foolish - those who do not love God. Because they have no fear of God.

It doesn’t matter if you’re one to cry your eyes out or you appear impassive and cool - we are called to lament our pains to the Lord. Expressing fears, struggles, anxieties, and trials in righteous lament, using scripture as a guide or as our entire lament, provides us with the words to articulate profound sorrow when we find ourselves at a loss for expression.

If we don't lament, we're bound to sin, usually in anger.

When this is the day your heart is overwhelmed, go to God in lament. The Psalms are so full of beautiful expressions to work through our pain, crying out to the Lord, so we don’t become overwhelmed in our sorrow, and fall into sin.

Tornados, cannibalism, human trafficking: big trials demand a big response. Sometimes our response is to glorify God. Often our response is anger, blame, and penance. 

With trials like these, we sometimes stray to questioning the goodness of God. Is God good? Is God faithful? Is God powerful?

  Is there sin that needs to be murdered? Sin that needs to be mortified? Sin that needs to be murd-ified? 

The siege of Jerusalem in 2 Kings chapter 6 was no joke, and a great example of what NOT to do in a trial.

When this is the day you’re going through the kinds of trials that fills you with despair, frustration, and anger, and you feel so tired of the wickedness in the evil world around you, turn your eyes to Christ. Don’t put your trust in man. Repent of your fears and look to Christ for strength in your desperation. Put your trust in God alone.
