The Discipline of Service

The Discipline of Service means we are committed to serving others as Jesus called and exemplified. Our service is a response as we look at what we do. This is not about salvation; it is about our response to God. This is about duty; it is about allowing our love for the Lord to backwash us, that is, to flow in us from Him and then to others around us. Service builds and prepares us to be stronger in character and in fulfilling our responsibility for His Kingdom. Service also nurtures and strengthens us as a means of grace; as we grow, we serve. The more we serve, the more Christ-like we become. This is about using the best of what God has given to us, being obedient to Him, and serving Him. We are all called to serve, not as just pastors or Christian professionals, but as our relationship with Christ is woven into all that we do in life.

The Discipline of Solitude

The Discipline of Solitude is the practice of our "waiting for God" to act and complete His will, so our focus is on Him and then He fills us. This is an aspect of private prayer and worship, but instead of doing the talking we cling to Christ in silence and do the listening. This means we still ourselves to hear what God has to say. This is about our willingness to be examined by God, to hear His voice and see His call because we have moved anything that is in the way of Him.  For this to happen we must still our rashness and busyness so the center of our being, our mind, will and emotions is focused on Christ and His will. Our will and desires are the things that have all of our attention and direction that need to be quieted before our Holy Lord so He can fill us up. It is all about Him and not about me! In this way, The Holy Spirit can motivate and also examine our attitudes, to see if there is room, (and there should be lots of it) for improvement in our relationships with both God and those around us!

The Discipline of Surrender means we trust our Lord Jesus Christ in all things without doubt or fault in our faith. We let go our hold on our perceived rights, agendas, and opinions that are not lined up to His. The Discipline of Surrender is a discipline because we have to make it a daily decision and practice. It is something we may never prefect, but we can aim our best to carry it out. It comes to us when we are willing and able to "cast all your anxiety (that is, our cares) on Him." (1 Peter 5:7) This denotes being active in our faith with humility and dependence on Him, so we trust God to direct our lives. We are benefited and liberated when He is in control, and we need not worry or fear. Take a careful look at this Discipline of Surrender from God's most precious Word.

This Discipline of Obedience shows our worship and appreciation to Christ by our identifying with Christ as our Lord. Obedience is not just in words, but also in deeds that demonstrate our words through practice and action. When we read and/or hear the Word of God, we will have the desire and heed the call to put it into action. There will be times we do not feel like it, but our obedience will override our feelings so that we remain steadfast and secure. This helps us see what is important in life. It helps us become more established and grow us further and firmer in the faith as all the Disciplines do. But this one is the clincher; it is the application of all the Disciplines.

Is the Discipline of Obedience Working in You?

The Discipline of Obedience is the practice of our pure loyalty to our Lord to go all out in faith. It helps us focus on Him and what He has done for us so we change from the inside out, our inward renovation becoming Christ-like to undergo His will, mind, and precepts. Obedience means having perfect confidence in Christ so we daily present ourselves to God as our LORD. We are essentially putting our faith into practice. We carefully seek what God requires of us and then align our lives with Him and His standards and call to the best of our ability. We seek Him first, not what interests or pleases us or others' demand of us. This Discipline is used by the Spirit to inspire us to keep our Lord first and foremost, cleaving to Him, regardless of the circumstances, so we will be able to keep His precepts and be loyal to His call. This helps us see our sinful nature and how Christ has rescued us from self destruction so we will know from whence we came and have no desire to go back. We are enabled by the Spirit and the cooperation of our faith to stick with Him even in times of dire suffering. This Discipline also helps us with our interpersonal relationships by recognizing authority and direction from others, such as the pastor and church, so the results will be winning situations.

The Discipline of Submission

The Discipline of Submission means having the willingness to voluntarily submit to Christ and also to others in authority. Thus, we make a commitment and resolve to yield our will, mind, and body for God's purposes so we can better hear, receive, and obey His Word. It is a call to submit and a Discipline because it takes our effort, even though we are not required to do so. When we are submitting to others, we are also submitting and serving Christ as Lord (Col. 3:23-24)! It is an aspect of the surrender of our lives to God so we are in His will. Because Submission is respect, it is not to exceed the parameters of the will of God or of love and righteousness.  This Discipline of Submission is more about our interpersonal relationships and how we humbly reverence God, whereas Surrender is how we should come before God, which we will address in the next DOF study. The application is for our benefit. In our churches, when we are under the leadership of those who are more mature and respect others' leadership, we will learn and grow more. In so doing we will become a better, healthier church. This will also affect our home life and relationships as we will show love and respect thus creating harmony and contentment.

The Discipline of Gratitude means we are practicing and producing an attitude of Gratitude, of being thankful, even when we cannot see what we have. This is an aspect of our worship of Christ-expressing to Him our appreciation and reverence for how He has benefited our lives. We are grateful because His blood has redeemed us. This also has a relational application in that it helps us deal with others as we show our support, appreciation, and benevolence to them for how they have benefited our lives.

The call for us is to implement this Discipline so our church can be a good and productive church that builds the kingdom of God and to have our mindset centered to make Him known in ourselves. The Discipline of Kingcom Mentality

A Kingdom of God Mentality sees the final authority in all matters of our faith and practice of his word and not in personal inclination, in trends or human thinking. It means He is in charge. He is our identity and our Lord personally and collectively. It is more about how we lead and manage our lives and our churches.  This means we are to realize and practice our faith and church life as if He is the sovereign Ruler, so that we are willing to grow closer to Him and also lead others to Him. We cannot lead where we have not been nor can we grow a healthy church when we are not healthy ourselves. Discipline is the key to discipleship.
