This week we welcome a real BOSS to the pod. I’m speaking of course about our good buddy Jack Schultz - the esteemed Chicago educator, theatre artist, and entrepreneur. But the Boss tag certainly also applies to the artist for whom Jack is arguing today - the journeyman rock legend himself, Bruce Springsteen!
Jack and Tyler have been friends for over 13 years now, having met in undergrad at The Theatre School at DePaul University. You might have heard of that old place by now. They subsequently lived together in Chicago after graduating from DePaul (along with dear friends of the pod Nube Esparza and Gilbert Tanner) and they were some truly beautiful years they got to share. Jack is the owner of Green Shirt Studio, the premier Meisner acting technique studio in Chicago, as well as the co-owner (with his lovely wife Alison) of Chicago Actor Staffing. Jack has the heart of a lion and a wit that could fell a redwood and we couldn’t have asked for a better guest to make the case for Springsteen this week.
Jack weaves a beautiful story of how his introduction to the Boss happened serendipitously, at just the right time. Bruce has been one of the most important voices in American rock for multiple generations now and his songs wormed their way deep into Jack’s consciousness. The hunger to “get out of town”, the wild abandon of the E Street Band, the purity of purpose, how it’s always been “all about the music” - these were the building blocks of Jack’s love for Bruce and what keep him coming back to his records, including “Born to Run”, to this day.
(Listen, it’s Tyler.) I love this guy. He’s family to me. We should all be so lucky to have someone like Jack Schultz in our life and, boy, do I count myself pretty damn lucky to get to share some time on Earth with this fella.
Will Jack’s case for the perfection of “Born to Run” have what it takes for it to be added to the pantheon? Join us and find out!
Here’s a link to Green Shirt Studio’s website. I cannot recommend their Meisner classes highly enough.
Here’s the link to Green Shirt’s Instagram page as well.
And here’s some more info about the work Jack and Alison are doing with Chicago Actor Staffing. Real proud of them!
