Best known for their recordings of songs like "Puff the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer," and "Leaving on a Jet Plane," Peter, Paul, and Mary clearly have lifetime membership in the folk music pantheon. (And with much better voices than that Dylan guy.) George does an excellent job summing up our ongoing conversation about the merits and motives of folk music AND joining our other ongoing conversation about separating the art from the artist. If we had our way, we'd chat with him for hours on end.

You know how we love our multi-hyphenate friends over here at TOGT11! And this week the hyphens are flyin’ yet again as we welcome winemaker-actor-producer and all-around bonne vivante Isabella Morano to the This One Goes to 11 living room. And what’s that she brought with her? Oh my word, it’s “græ” by the one and only Moses Sumney. 

“græ” is a wide-ranging, kaleidoscopic musical journey that draws deeply from the well of humanity that is Moses Sumney. While it can be a challenge to wrap your arms (ears?) around at first, Isabella insists strongly that this undefinability is what makes “græ” so damn special. She recounts her first experience encountering the album in the wine storage room of an old place of employment and how that serendipitous meeting has led to an ever-evolving and deepening relationship with this music and the artist behind it. In much the same way that Isabella fiercely defends her right to continuously evolve as a creative being, Sumney’s work here challenges the listener to embrace their own inherent multiplicity and celebrate it too. Can I get a hell yeah? Oh helllll yeah.

So the album rocks, huh? But will Isabella’s case have what it takes to carve out a place in the TOGT11 pantheon for “græ”? Pop the cork on this sucker and find out.

It's safe to say that this week we fell in love again (all things go, all things go) with the low-fidelity lushness of Sufjan Stevens' Illinois album. All thanks to one of our favorite multi-hyphenate artists and Wishbone lovers - Janie Killips! Janie defines "folk music" for us and assures us that banjos are not a prerequisite (but they sure do help). And they graciously put up with Grandpa Michael's ancient pop culture references. It's exactly the conversation we'd hoped to have about an album that already meant a lot to us.

This week on This One Goes to 11, we’re discussing yet another grand dame of art pop: the singular, magical, unforgettable Kate Bush! And we’re beyond lucky to have another unforgettable friend of the pod here making the case for Ms. Bush’s “Hounds of Love” - Tyler’s one-time colleague and forever friend Alexis Jaworski. As you’ll find out, Alexis and Kate are a match made in heaven. 

Alexis came ready with a rock-solid case for this album’s perfection. She paints a picture of her coming of age during the musically infamous 90s in Chicago and leaves Tyler and Michael green with envy listing some of the legendary shows she attended. There’s a non-zero percent chance Radiohead was one of them, but names like Rage Against the Machine and Violent Femmes are mentioned as well. I mean, come one! This all serves to tie into her rediscovery of Kate Bush during the depths of the initial Covid quarantine and how the balance Bush strikes between the light and dark with her music served as a buoy for her when we found ourselves adrift. Alexis has an artist’s soul and an intellect like a scalpel, we think Kate B would be quite flattered by the testimony rendered here.

But will Alexis’s case have what it takes to run up that hill and place “Hounds of Love” in the TOGT11 pantheon? You don’t have to make a deal with God to find out, just listen to the podcast!

We’ve got big St. Louis energy on the pod this week! No, we’re not, at long last, discussing Chingy’s iconic 2003 effort “Jackpot”. Still waiting on that one. But we *are* talking to St. Louisan, multi-hyphenate film professional, and all-around gem of a human being Alex “ATM” Mitchell.

ATM and Tyler met playing D&D with their mutual friend Max Bieber and Tyler knew she’d be an excellent guest when she handled the AUX cord while driving the crew out to a California superbloom a while back. This feeling was further validated by the bangers she nominated for consideration before the tribunal and we just had to let her make her case for The Internet’s outstanding 2015 album “Ego Death”. Guided by the steady hand of Syd of Odd Future fame, The Internet’s sound can be reasonably described as “alternative R&B and soul”, but it really does contain multitudes. Syd, Steve Lacy, Matt Martians, and company give life to slick, sexy soundscapes that are as danceable as they are “chillable”. This is music that could soundtrack the coolest party you’ve ever been lucky enough to attend, as Michael puts it. ATM builds her case for this album’s perfection by eloquently relating how the timing of her discovery and the soothing, calming quality of the music were truly just what the doctor ordered. It’s calming without putting you to sleep, it’s sexy-hot without feeling like you have to turn it off when your parents are in the car. This album can fit just about any occasion and ATM makes one hell of a case for why it deserves inclusion in the TOGT11 pantheon.

But, y’know, will her argument have what it takes to get a big ole 11 slapped on “Ego Death”? You’ll just have to listen to find out.

His skill at writing music reviews in the way they “should” be written traditionally exists simultaneously with a deep sensitivity to music’s power to unlock the most personal corners of our hearts. He’s worked all parts of the vulnerability spectrum, as it relates to music, and SOPHIE’s daring, not-of-this-world work serves as a fitting expression of what keeps him voraciously pouring tunes into his noggin every single week.
