Katriona Beales is an internationally exhibited artist whose work responds to the social implications of new technologies, mental health and digital culture. Katriona’s interdisciplinary project ‘Are We All Addicts Now?’ supported by The Wellcome Trust and ACE, was shown at Furtherfield (2017). Recent work includes new commissions for: the V&A and Science Gallery London (both 2018); IMPAKT Netherlands and a participatory green-screen installation at Autograph (both 2020). Recent exhibitions include the group shows at Camberwell Space, London; Estacion Terrena, Bogota; ArsSpace, Seoul and the Ludwig Museum, Budapest; (all 2022). Katriona has an MA from Chelsea College of Arts supported by a Stanley Picker Bursary and an artist profile on Rhizome.org. In 2022 she undertook an experimental online residency with Anna Bunting-Branch, at the NHS' only Centre treating Gaming Disorders, supported by an ACE project grant. She is one of the 3 founding members of Artists' Union England.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT

Ruth Lie is a curator / producer based in South East London and is currently Senior Creative Producer at Somerset House Studios. A former mentor on the London Creative Network programme with SPACE Studios, she has specific experience in public sector, events based programming, as well as commissioning and supporting both new and established artists from a wide range of creative disciplines. As a result, she has formed long lasting active networks within the arts and culture landscape of London over the past twelve years.

Through programming large scale events, festivals and site specific projects, she is passionate about projects and work that explore different perspectives within art institutions and wants the language of the art world to be more open and accessible.

Originating from an architecture background, Ruth has a Masters in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art. She worked for a number of years at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), which included leading on the Friday Late programme there. After going freelance and having two children, she worked on projects for organisations such as the Wellcome Collection, Museum of London, Culture Mile, City of London and NOW Gallery. She worked on the East London Comics & Arts Festival (ELCAF), funded by Arts Council England for 6 years, before moving from freelance life to Whitechapel Gallery where she was Curator of Public Programmes (maternity cover) and led on the Nocturnal Creatures festival in 2022.

Dr Cecilia Wee fRSA (she / they) is an independent curator, artist, educator, consultant, coach, and agitator working with arts, culture and community organisations, examining issues of equity and precarity in the workplace and beyond, to make strategies and infrastructures of learning and dreaming with underrepresented communities. Cecilia wrote her PhD on the documentation of Live Art, is Associate Lecturer in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art, and founder of tdwm studio.

INTERVIEW EXCERPT

jina valentine is a mother, visual artist, and Associate Professor of Printmedia at SAIC. Her practice is informed by traditional craft techniques and interweaves histories latent within found texts, objects, narratives, and spaces. jina’s work involves language translation, mining content from material and digital archives, and experimental strategies for humanizing data-visualization. She is also co-founder (with artist Heather Hart) of Black Lunch Table, an oral-history archiving project. Her work has received recognition and support from the Graham Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, and Art Matters among others. jina received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon and her MFA from Stanford University.

12ø was a collective motivated by interesting processes rather than shiny exhibitions. We created projects that exploit the gaps in our knowledge and our eagerness to learn.

We strove to create a programme that promoted, challenged, and encouraged artistic practice in all its manifestations rather than scoring points for the CV. For us to do this, it was paramount that we had an open, flexible, and supportive approach, catering to artists' development and their individual needs.

eva is a third of the group formally known as 12ø. They are a quasi artist/designer in Berlin but still make works that prod their definitions of 'aspiration', 'cheating', through bootleg kopfkino props.

Lou Macnamara is a London-based Cinematographer, Camera Operator and Technician across a range of projects. Their recent cinematography credits include, ‘Passing Through’ (2023) a short film for Trans Media Watch, ‘The Miracle on George Green’ (2022) an artist film by Onyeka Igwe and ‘Call Us CRIPtic’ (2022) a documentary behind the scenes at the Barbican Theatre.

Lou has also co-directed investigative documentary ‘Keenie Meenie’ (2020) for Declassified and artist moving image hybrid project ‘It’s Personal’ (2021) commissioned by Film Video Umbrella.

Jesse Malmed is an artist, curator and educator living and working in video, performance, text, installation, events, occasional objects, their gaps and overlaps and Chicago. His works play in sub- and counter-cultural histories, like a joke that's a poem that's a song covering itself, a shadow puppet interfering in the broadcast beam, having deja vu for the first time, or watching a time travel sequence in reverse. Engaging with a range of publics, his entanglements and propositions include instigating the poster platform Western Pole, co-driving artist bumper sticker project Trunk Show, directing the Live to Tape Artist Television Festival, programming with ACRE TV and the Nightingale Cinema, hosting the Artists' Karaoke Archive, permanent guest hosting contemporary art radio show Bad at Sports, slinging wares and wears via Jetsy Merchblatt, and recording and assisting the kindergarten a capella noise ensemble Huskies Floorchestra. He attended Bard College and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he teaches alongside Chicago Public Schools and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Joana Joachim is an Assistant professor of Black Studies in Art Education, Art History and Social Justice at Concordia University. Her research and teaching interests include Black feminist art histories, Black diasporic art histories, critical museologies, Black Canadian studies, and Canadian slavery studies. Her SSHRC-funded doctoral work, examined the visual culture of Black women’s hair and dress in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, investigating practices of self-preservation and self-care through the lens of creolization as well as historical and contemporary art practices. She earned her PhD in the department of Art History and Communication Studies and at the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies at McGill University working under the supervision of Dr. Charmaine A. Nelson. Dr. Joachim obtained her Master’s degree in Museology from Université de Montréal and her BFA from University of Ottawa. In 2020 she was appointed as a McGill Provostial Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Institutional Histories, Slavery and Colonialism.

Dr. Joachim’s scholarship has appeared in books, journals and magazines including Spaces and Places of Canadian Popular Culture, Manuel Mathieu: World Discovered Under Other Skies, RACAR, Mixed Heritage: (Self) Portraits and Identity Negotiation (Americana: e-Journal Of American Studies In Hungary) and C Magazine.

Jessica Gaynelle Moss (born 1987) is an artist, curator, custodian of Black art and creator of platforms and spaces that invest in and support Black artists.

Melding her dedication to making art, supporting artists and developing more equitable and just policies, Jessica’s creative practice and projects transcend any one medium, discipline or field, coalescing fine art with real estate development, institution-building and philanthropy.

Beyond that she runs her own arts consultancy, curates exhibitions and performances, regularly leads art talks and studio critiques, serves on the leadership boards of various cultural entities, and is a frequent speaker on panels on the subjects of artist support, advocacy and stewardship.

Jessica received a bachelors in Fine Art from Carnegie Mellon University in 2009; a masters in Arts Administration, Policy and Management from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015; and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2018.

Bella Milroy is an artist and writer who lives in her hometown of Chesterfield, Derbyshire. She works responsively through mediums of sculpture, drawings, photography, writing and text. She is also a portrait artist. Her work explores how we touch and make contact with the world around us, with the hand-held being of particular significance. She makes work about making work (and being disabled) and not being able to make work (and being disabled). She is interested in the duality of every-day existence, and how things can be both beautiful/painful, both interesting/dull. This process-based practice is fundamental to her as a disabled artist, utilising and working with the significant limits and demands of living with a chronic illness, all mixed in with the detritus of domesticity.

She is continually motivated by concepts of public and private spaces, and where the sick and/or disabled body exists within them. These concerns find themselves emerging in many aspects of her work, particularly within the collaborative projects she engages with such as Soft Sanctuary, an ongoing programme commissioned by the Human Library Project for Sefton Libraries.

She is an Artistic Associate at Level Centre and Creator and Director of Mob-Shop .

In 2015 she won the Birth Rites Collection Bi-Annual Award, part of which was her residency at the Women’s Art Library, based at Goldsmiths University of London, resulting project and solo show, File Under Female.

She studied Fine Art (BA) at Nottingham Trent University 2010-2016.

Part of her practice includes her work with the Royal College of Physician’s Patient and Carer Network since 2014. In this work she challenges the way doctors and patients interact with one another and the significance of this relationship to the picture of our overall health as individuals.

Her favourite place to be is in the garden at home with her partner Jono, her dog Doris and her cat Grace.
