            • 143 - Ear and Hearing Care for All: We Can Make It Happen - Live from FHH 2023

On World Hearing Day, the WHO launched a new initiative to enable local healthcare professionals to deliver primary ear care including treatable conditions such as cerumen buildup and otitis. This could resolve up to 60% of ear issues directly. Practitioners would be trained to screen for hearing loss but not to treat it. Yet there are many regions of the world where referring out to a hearing care professional is difficult, if not impossible. Given recent innovations in portable diagnostic equipment, telecare, and devices, the possibility of equipping primary healthcare professionals to treat many cases of hearing loss is growing every day.

Join the discussion as an international panel of experts in delivering hearing care solutions to underserved populations considers the opportunities and barriers to reaching the 430 million people with debilitating hearing loss.

                • 140 - Enhancing Cochlear Implant Outcomes with Remote Aftercare - Discussion with Sandra Porps, AuD

It is widely believed that only 5% of the more than 2 million adults who are potential candidates for cochlear implant technology have been treated. There are several reasons for this low uptake rate, including the limited number of audiologists and clinics who work with cochlear implants. In addition, these limited resources create an aftercare burden, as many CI recipients must travel long distances for a high number of in-person appointments.
Our guest, Dr. Sandra Porps, discusses a recent study that demonstrates remote aftercare is not only popular among adult CI recipients, but improves outcomes.

                  • 139 - Integrating OTC Hearing Aids into the Clinic - A Discussion with Dr. Annie Duchen of WS Audiology

This week, Amyn Amlani discusses over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids and their integration into hearing healthcare practices. Our guest is Annie Duchen, AuD, the Senior Manager of Customer Success for the OTC team at WS Audiology.

They discuss the current OTC product offering now available through the Sony x WS Audiology partnership and the importance of personalized recommendations based on user priorities and preferences. Whether someone prioritizes discreet designs or seamless streaming capabilities, understanding the features of OTC devices plays a crucial role in guiding patients towards the most suitable options.
The comprehensive support services provided as part of the OTC offering by WS Audiology and Sony aim to ensure a successful user experience for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. The support system consists of two tiers, with trained agents offering live assistance for technical queries and general troubleshooting, while audiologists provide additional counseling and guidance. If the OTC product is not suitable for a particular individual, the support team recommends seeking help from a hearing care professional. They have also incorporated additional safety features, including intelligent algorithms and a self-fitting process that alerts users if a particular product may not be suitable for them.
By providing OTC hearing aids and comprehensive support services, they aim to optimize audibility for users while also encouraging earlier adoption of hearing devices.
