This week, host Amyn Amlani interviews Antonio Esteban, a hearing professional in the Dominican Republic, about how his son's hearing loss diagnosis inspired him and his wife to begin a foundation to help other families. Nearly two decades later, their foundation has helped change the lives of thousands of people with free hearing aids and hearing care services.
Antonio shares a number of incredible stories that are sure to leave you feeling inspired.
HHTM would also like to offer a special thank you to Redux, who stepped up after this interview to donate one of their professional hearing aid dryers to Antonio's clinic. Due to the high humidity in the Dominican Republic, hearing aids are much more susceptible to breakdown. Redux's unique approach to moisture removal can help prevent moisture related repairs and allow Antonio to better serve his patients: https://www.redux.com/hearing-instruments/

Dr. Michael Valente returns to make that case that audiologists should consider introducing remote microphones and TV listening devices routinely for their hearing aid patients as add-on accessories. Regular use of remote mics and TV listening devices help address the biggest complaints by hearing aid users, in spite of being well fitting with their devices - difficulty hearing in noise and difficulty hearing at a distance.
In the presentation Dr. Valente reviews some of the research surrounding remote microphones, even evidence that shows how remote mics can provide a patient with hearing loss when listening in noise, the ability to hear better than a person with normal hearing! He also shares how audiologists can counsel patients, reluctant to invest money to try hearing aids, to convert Air Pod Pro2’s into hearing aids and add an inexpensive Bluetooth adapter ($80) to their TV to achieve a very effective TV streamer.

In this special presentation, Brent Edwards, Ph.D., explores innovations in treatment for so-called minimal hearing losses. He discusses whether hearing professionals should recommend hearing devices to people with minimal hearing loss, and what research actually tells us about how well people with minimal hearing losses can benefit from hearing devices.
The presentation includes research findings from the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL), where Dr. Edwards serves as Director, into these questions and into the potential use of emerging technology innovations.
