Last month, Newsday reported that Nassau's Comptroller demanded state officials reimburse the county $1.75 million to partly cover yearly expenses of a fiscal watchdog group that monitors Nassau University Medical Center's spending. NIFA, which stands for The Nassau Interim Finance Authority, oversees budgets for the county and the hospital’s parent company, is funded by Nassau taxpayer dollars. Comptroller Elaine Phillips says that since the hospital is now run by state-appointed officials rather than county leaders, Nassau residents should no longer foot the bill for its fiscal oversight.  Bill McIntyre speaks wth Nassau County Comproller Elaine Phillips about this & other stories from her office.

Some state lawmakers have recently made news by performing a surprise inspection of local ICE detention facilities, and how local police departments interact with ICE has been under fire as a new New York State law just went into effect. Newsday reported that data maintained by the New York State Education Department showed that Long Island school districts reported over 1900 verified bullying, harassment, and discrimination incidents in the 2024-2025 academic year. That sounds like a lot, but the number of incidents dropped by 26% from the year prior.  However, child advocates said the data fails to show the full scope of the problem, since many students and parents don't know they can file formal complaints or are afraid to come forward.  Bill McIntyre talks with Joseph A.
