This week on the show:

Carl Corey is a photographer based in River Falls, Wisconsin. Lately, he's been traveling the country in his small Winnebago documenting  the quirks, contradictions, and moments quiet of beauty he finds in small town America.

In his pictures we see roadside motels, dive bars, and suburban homes with bizarre lawn ornaments. There's a photo of an empty main street at night illuminated by Christmas lights and a painting of Richard Nixon bathed in demonic orange light.

Carl is calling his project "Americaville" and last week I got a chance to chat with him about this ongoing work. We discussed his time walking across Wisconsin, religion in America, and how Mark Twain has influenced his photography.

"Americaville" is on view at Wallspace Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA through March 31st.

This week:

A conversation with curators Lisa Hostetler and Katherine Bussard, the authors of Color Rush. The book examines the 75 year period between 1907 and 1981,  when color photography took over the American visual landscape and was embraced by culture high and low. In addition to some of the earliest color photographs, Color Rush features advertising images, magazine spreads, photojournalism and art photography. Included in the mix are surprising color landscapes shot by Ansel Adams for Kodak, photographic abstractions by artist Hy Hirsh, and John Collier's documentary images shot in the 1940s for the Farm Security Administration.

The range of images in Color Rush reflects the interconnected nature of color photography's history. It's a history in which artists, popular magazines, advertisers, and film companies all played a major role in making color photography the ubiquitous medium it is today.

Color Rush is available from Aperture. Lisa Hostetler and Katherine Bussard also curated the Color Rush exhibition, which was on view at the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2013.

Jonathon Keats is an artist and experimental philosopher. In his book, Forged, he makes the case for why forgers are the greatest artists of our age. In his book, he looks at the history of art forgery, and tells the stories of six incredible and ambitious forgers who conned art experts, Nazi officials and entire nations into believing in their fake wares. Jonathon argues that a well perpetrated forgery forces all of us to to question our ideas about authenticity, authority and belief. This is something that most legitimate artwork fails to achieve.

In addition to writing books Jonathon also makes art and writes a column for Forbes.com.

This week we take a look at an exhibition currently on view at the Jewish Museum here in New York. The show is called Unorthodox and  it brings together fifty-five artists from around the world, all of whom share a desire to break rules, challenge artistic conventions, and question the status quo of their time. I recently  got a chance to speak with two of the show's co-curators, Daniel S. Palmer and Kelly Taxter, about the exhibition and the importance of creative risk taking in contemporary art. Unorthodox is on view through March 27th.
