Thomas Jefferson Bowen: When Fairytales Finally Come True

Listen Later

Fairy tales always end with "happily ever after," but real life rarely follows that script. What happens when God allows suffering to persist without resolution? When the pain doesn't subside and the happy ending seems forever out of reach?

Through the lens of an animated movie watched with his young daughter, we're invited to consider the stark contrast between fairy tale endings and the reality of human suffering. While we love to focus on Job's restoration in chapter 42, we often gloss over his raw, unfiltered expressions of anguish across 39 chapters where he wished he had never been born. Even heroes of the faith like Moses and Elijah begged God to take their lives while Charles Spurgeon confessed to depression "so fearful" he hoped none would ever experience it.

The forgotten story of Thomas Jefferson Bowen illuminates this tension beautifully. As America's first missionary to Nigeria in 1850, Bowen created the first grammar and dictionary of the Yoruba language, helped end the slave trade, and established what would become the Nigerian Baptist Convention. Yet his legacy was almost erased from history when diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness, combined with the side effects of opium-based medication, led to his mental deterioration. He spent his final fourteen years cycling through insane asylums before dying in an unmarked grave, never knowing that his brief five years of ministry would eventually lead to 10 million Nigerian Baptists.

What sustains us when there's no resolution on this side of eternity? The Apostle Paul provides our answer, describing his lifetime of suffering as "light" and "momentary" compared to the eternal weight of glory awaiting believers. Our earthly biography is merely volume one that will transition into an eternal volume two where we truly will live happily ever after. This perspective doesn't erase our pain, but it infuses it with meaning that can carry us through our darkest days. Listen and discover how to find light in your darkest moments of suffering.
