The Dravitan Civic Club recently celebrated its 45th anniversary Feb. 22 at the Thomasville Civic Center. The event took place to celebrate the club’s legacy. Members also discussed topics for upcoming events and club projects, scholarships, awards and other major contributions. A memorial table with photos was set up to honor past members who are deceased.

Each February, the United States observes Black History Month, which recognizes the contributions, struggles and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. The idea for Black History Month dates back nearly a century. In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week to encourage a more inclusive understanding of American history. At 10 years old Matthias Pugh has made history in Clarke County and surrounding areas. Matthias wrote a book to help both children and adults. As the Alabama Legislature convenes for their 2025 Regular Legislative Session this week, the State Senate will have a new president pro tem. Forty-nine-year-old State Senator Garlan Gudger of Cullman will ascend to the top leadership post in the Alabama Senate. He will succeed Senator Greg Reed of Jasper, who has moved into Governor Kay Ivey’s cabinet as head of the new Department of Workforce Development. Comprehensive security upgrades are coming soon to the Thomasville City Schools District. Beginning the morning of Monday, Feb. 10, all students, faculty, and staff will be screened by new portable metal detectors at the main entrances at all three campuses.
