Those Were The Days

We're kicking off Game Shows with Classic Concentration! This show was all about memorizing and solving puzzles, and surprising to all of us, was hosted by Alex Trebek! We had a blast talking about it and think you will too.

For next week, Audie is going to take us all over the world with Where In The World is Carmen San Diego! Keep an eye on Twitter for the episode we decide on for this one.

There are few millenials who managed to grow up without knowing the tune to this show's theme song. Take a look, it's in a book, Reading Rainbow! Amy and LeVar take us to the Robbery at Diamond Dog Diner where we get to hear all about a diamond heist gone wrong. We also learn about how pasta is made along with some fun diner lingo. This was a good one!

Next week, Travis is going to bring us a show, but we're not sure what kind of show yet. Look for our poll on Twitter @thosedaysshow to help us decide!

Seatbelts everyone! I just realized that most school buses don't have seat belts, yet the magic school bus does. I guess that should tell us a lot about the kinds of adventures that Ms. Frizzle and her students go on. What a fun show this was! We had a blast going on a field trip of our own all the way back to 1997 and one of those educational shows that teaches you without letting you know you're learning. We hope you enjoy this ride!

Next week, we're taking a look in a book with Reading Rainbow!

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood of the internet ya'll! Why? Because we're talking about Mr. Rogers Neighborhood on the show. If you were born anytime before the year 2000, you've probably been impacted by this incredible man and the work he did for kids. We go through this episode and chat about our memories of him and what he meant to us. There were definitely some swelling eyes as we tried to get through this thing. There's no force in the world quite as powerful as selfless kindness, and Mr. Rogers was a prime example of that.

We will NOT be around next week, but in TWO weeks you can expect us back and bringing The Magic School Bus with us!

Stephen is asking you to buckle up and join us in watching The Magic School Bus - Episode 10 on Netflix!

It's time for educational programming here on Those Were The Days! It's always a challenge to get kids interested in learning, and what better medium to use than the thing they are already watching. The TV became an instrument of education in many households across America, and we're going to explore the best of that over the next month. Starting with Square One Television. A show all about getting kids interested in mathematics. Did they succeed? Listen and find out!

Next week, tune in as Audie brings us the GOAT. We're watching Mr. Rogers

Amy has picked a titan of the variety show world and had us take a look at Rowan and Martin's Laugh In! When you think variety shows, there's a good chance that this one is the one that pops into your head. We had an absolute blast chatting about this show and we think you'll have a good time to.

Next up, we start our Educational Shows theme. Travis is going to take us back to Square One TV!

On this episode we go back to the wild and wonderful 1970's to take a look at The Flip Wilson Show! Flip Wilson is one of those comedians that made a huge dent in comedy during his time but has since been largely forgotten. We're not sure why considering he had one of the most popular variety shows on TV for five years and had a guest list that would blow your mind. He could go toe to toe with any number of popular comedians from the time but so many people don't remember his name. We're here to change that!

Next week's assignment is for you to watch Rowan and Martin's Laugh In! S1E10 can be found on Tubi.TV

Yeehaw! We went back in time to one of the most popular variety shows of the 70's and 80's. Hee Haw ran up to the early 90's and was consistently a high rated show, even outside of the heartland of America. There's just something about puns, dad jokes, goofy skits, and manic energy that makes a show work. We had a good time chatting about this one. Maybe we even had more fun talking about it than we did watching it. If you have any thoughts on Hee Haw, send us some email!

Next week, Stephen is taking us back to the high heeled, bell bottomed, big tie 70's with The Flip Wilson Show! Watch it for free on Daily Motion. Special guests are Redd Fox, Joan Rivers, and Helen Reddy.

We didn't have to go very far back in time to find our first episode of the Variety Show month here on Those Were The Days. Travis took us to the heyday of Comedy Central, and brought us the European variety show spoof, Viva Variety! Run by the comedy geniuses in The State comedy troupe, this show encapsulates the 90s in a way we haven't experienced yet on this show. We hope you enjoy our chat, and don't forget to check out the show yourself!

Next week, Audie is taking us to one of the most iconic variety shows ever, HeeHaw.

Your assignment is to watch HeeHaw S16E17! Check it out on Youtube

Well, hello there! Welcome to Julie Child's kitchen. That's right, we went all the way back to the OG cooking show. Amy has brought us a gem of history that was once the only real cooking show available. Julia Child is an institution in the world of cooking TV. So many times she's been imitated and parodied, yet several of us had never actually seen her do her thing on her own show. This was a wonderful trip, and a great way to close out this cooking show month on Those Were The Days.

Our next them is Variety Shows! First up on our list is coming from Travis

Your homework is to watch: Viva Variety - S2E5. Available on Archive.org
