As we celebrate and recognize Independence Day this year, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States, we come at this milestone from a diversity of perspectives. Some are joyous, highlighting the advancements this nation has made in the direction of liberty and justice for all. Others take a posture of lament, noting the ways we have and do fail at these values and have and do contribute to people’s suffering.
